Tracking 47 post-spawned adult Atlantic salmon Salmo salar L. in a hydropower-regulated river through autumn, winter and spring revealed that winter survival was 56% and 75% in two study years, respectively, with higher mortality of males than females (50% vs. 33% and 100% vs. 13%, respectively). Some kelts (n = 7) displayed nondirected movements that were interpreted as a reconditioning period for an average of 9–17 days prior to directed downstream movements indicating the initiation of migration. Survival after the initiation of migration in spring was 83% and 94% to the hydropower dam in the first and second study years, and decreased to 60 and 63%, respectively, after dam passage. There were no further losses in the downriver reach in the second year, with the first year having a cumulative survival estimate of 53% to the river mouth. Kelts approached the dam when the spillway gates were available as a passage option most of the time (64%–75%), but some kelts arrived at the dam or had not yet passed when spillways were closed (n = 6) and the only remaining passage option was restricted to the turbines. However, all but one kelt that must have passed via turbine were successful in reaching the river mouth. Migratory delay presumably due to searching behaviour caused by low water flow was estimated at approximately 6 days as migration rates were significantly slower in the reservoir (median ± s.e. 8.5 ± 2.5 km day−1) than up- (29.7 ± 5.0 km day−1) or downriver (22.1 ± 3.1 km day−1). The proportion of time (median 30%) that kelts spent swimming upstream (searching behaviour) in the reservoir was a significant variable for migration success.  相似文献

We investigated the effects of dietary iron deficiency on the redox system in the heart. Dietary iron deficiency increased heart weight and accumulation of carbonylated proteins. However, expression levels of heme oxygenase-1 and LC3-II, an antioxidant enzyme and an autophagic marker, respectively, in iron-deficient mice were upregulated compared to the control group, resulting in a surrogate phenomenon against oxidative stress.  相似文献

Malaria, blood-borne filarial worms and intestinal parasites are all endemic in Gabon. This geographical co-distribution leads to polyparasitism and, consequently, the possibility of immune-mediated interactions among different parasite species. Intestinal protozoa and helminths could modulate antimalarial immunity, for example, thereby potentially increasing or reducing susceptibility to malaria. The aim of the study was to compare the cytokine levels and cytokine ratios according to parasitic profiles of the population to determine the potential role of co-endemic parasites in the malaria susceptibility of populations. Blood and stool samples were collected during cross-sectional surveys in five provinces of Gabon. Parasitological diagnosis was performed to detect plasmodial parasites, Loa loa, Mansonella perstans, intestinal helminths (STHs) and protozoan parasites. Nested PCR was used to detect submicroscopic plasmodial infection in individuals with negative blood smears. A cytometric bead array was used to quantify interleukin (IL)-6, IL-10 and tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α in the plasma of subjects with different parasitological profiles. Median IL-6 and IL-10 levels and the median IL-10/TNF-α ratio were all significantly higher among individuals with Plasmodium (P.) falciparum infection than among other participants (p<0.0001). The median TNF-α level and IL-10/IL-6 ratio were higher in subjects with STHs (p = 0.09) and P. falciparum-intestinal protozoa co-infection (p = 0.04), respectively. IL-6 (r = -0.37; P<0.01) and IL-10 (r = -0.37; P<0.01) levels and the IL-10/TNF-α ratio (r = -0.36; P<0.01) correlated negatively with age. Among children under five years old, the IL-10/TNF-α and IL-10/IL-6 ratios were higher in those with intestinal protozoan infections than in uninfected children. The IL-10/TNF-α ratio was also higher in children aged 5–15 years and in adults harbouring blood-borne filariae than in their control counterparts, whereas the IL-10/IL-6 ratio was lower in those aged 5–15 years with filariae and intestinal parasites but higher in adults with intestinal parasitic infections. Asymptomatic malaria is associated with a strong polarization towards a regulatory immune response, presenting high circulating levels of IL-10. P. falciparum/intestinal protozoa co-infections were associated with an enhanced IL-10 response. Immunity against malaria could differ according to age and carriage of other parasites. Helminths and intestinal protozoa can play a role in the high susceptibility to malaria currently observed in some areas of Gabon, but further investigations are necessary.  相似文献

Chimpanzees and gorillas are the only nonhuman primates known to harbor viruses closely related to HIV-1. Phylogenetic analyses showed that gorillas acquired the simian immunodeficiency virus SIVgor from chimpanzees, and viruses from the SIVcpz/SIVgor lineage have been transmitted to humans on at least four occasions, leading to HIV-1 groups M, N, O, and P. To determine the geographic distribution, prevalence, and species association of SIVgor, we conducted a comprehensive molecular epidemiological survey of wild gorillas in Central Africa. Gorilla fecal samples were collected in the range of western lowland gorillas (n = 2,367) and eastern Grauer gorillas (n = 183) and tested for SIVgor antibodies and nucleic acids. SIVgor antibody-positive samples were identified at 2 sites in Cameroon, with no evidence of infection at 19 other sites, including 3 in the range of the Eastern gorillas. In Cameroon, based on DNA and microsatellite analyses of a subset of samples, we estimated the prevalence of SIVgor to be 1.6% (range, 0% to 4.6%), which is significantly lower than the prevalence of SIVcpzPtt in chimpanzees (5.9%; range, 0% to 32%). All newly identified SIVgor strains formed a monophyletic lineage within the SIVcpz radiation, closely related to HIV-1 groups O and P, and clustered according to their field site of origin. At one site, there was evidence for intergroup transmission and a high intragroup prevalence. These isolated hot spots of SIVgor-infected gorilla communities could serve as a source for human infection. The overall low prevalence and sporadic distribution of SIVgor could suggest a decline of SIVgor in wild populations, but it cannot be excluded that SIVgor is still more prevalent in other parts of the geographical range of gorillas.Simian immunodeficiency viruses (SIVs) have been identified in approximately 40 African primate species, but chimpanzees and gorillas are the only nonhuman primates known to harbor viruses closely related to human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) (38). These viruses have been transmitted to humans on at least four occasions, leading to four different HIV-1 groups, M to P (14, 26). West central African chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes troglodytes) in southern Cameroon are recognized as the reservoir of the ancestors of HIV-1 group M, which resulted in the AIDS pandemic, and of HIV-1 group N, which has been identified in only a few individuals in Cameroon (15). Western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) are infected with SIVgor, which is closely related to the two other HIV-1 lineages, termed group O, which represents 1% of HIV-1 infections in west central Africa, and group P, recently described from a single Cameroonian patient residing in France (26, 36).The phylogenetic relationships between SIVcpz, SIVgor, and HIV-1 show that chimpanzees are the original reservoir of SIVs found in gorillas and humans (31, 36). Pan troglodytes troglodytes apes were most likely the original source of SIVgor, because SIVgor is significantly more closely related to SIVcpzPtt, from Pan troglodytes troglodytes in west central Africa, than to SIVcpzPts, from Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii in east Africa. In addition, an ancestral SIVcpzPtt lineage from which SIVgor and HIV-1 group O viruses are derived has been identified in the form of mosaic pol fragments in present-day SIVcpzPtt recombinants (2, 31). However, the ways of transmission and the exact origin of SIVgor infection in gorillas are not yet resolved. Because of the extensive overlap in habitat and diet (6, 23, 29, 33, 40), direct encounters between gorillas and chimpanzees seem inevitable, but they have rarely been observed and have been described as primarily nonaggressive (17, 28). The primate source of HIV-1 groups O and P also remains unclear, since current data do not allow one to differentiate between a chimpanzee and a gorilla reservoir, especially for HIV-1 group O (26, 31, 36).To determine the geographic distribution, prevalence, and species association of SIVgor, we performed a comprehensive survey of wild gorilla populations in west central (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) and east (Gorilla beringei graueri) Africa. We found an overall prevalence of SIVgor of 1.6%, with infection confirmed at only three field sites. At two of these sites, however, the prevalence of SIVgor was 4.6%, indicating efficient virus spread within and between different communities. The geographic distribution of SIVgor is thus far limited to only a few sites in Cameroon. However, isolated hot spots of infection do exist, which could serve as a source of human infection.  相似文献

Caryedon serratus is found in different agro-ecological and agro-climatic zones, and its damage to groundnuts can vary up to an 80% quantitative loss of yield. This study seeks to demonstrate the effects of different agro-ecological refer to so as to very quickly process the content zones and the presence or absence of groundnut cultivation on the structure and genetic distribution of C. serratus in West Africa. Portions of the cytochrome b and 28S ribosomal genes of C. serratus were sequenced, using samples from four countries that represent different agro-ecological and agro-climatic sub-regions of West Africa. The results showed 37 haplotypes for the cytochrome b and 7 haplotypes for the 28S ribosomal gene. Although genetic diversity was different between agro-ecological zones tests show no significant differences in structuring according to agro-ecological zone. These tests, as well as the phylogenetic relationships that our results imply, indicate that there is a genetic differentiation between individuals from groundnut culturing areas compared to those from areas where the cultivation of groundnuts is absent or low.  相似文献

A new gold nanoparticle-based construct has been designed to hydrophobic drugs delivery into cancer cells. Cyclodextrin scaffolds adsorbed on polyethyleneimine-coated gold nanoparticles (AuNP@PEI@CD) have been used to encapsulate hydrophobic tetrapyrrolic compounds consisting of gold complexes of 5,10,15,20-tetraphenyl porphyrin (AuTPPCl) and 5-(4-acetoxyphenyl)-10,15,20-triphenyl porphyrin (AuTPPOAcCl). These two nanoparticles have been tested for their cytotoxic activities against the two colorectal cancer cell lines HT-29 and HCT-116 and have shown significant increases in toxicity when compared to the corresponding non-vectorized tetrapyrrolic macrocycles.  相似文献

Mozambique tilapia Oreochromis mossambicus acclimated to 27 degrees C were then held at 19, 23, 27 (control), 31 and 35 degrees C, and were examined for non-specific cellular and humoral responses after 12-96 h. Total leucocyte count decreased significantly when fish were transferred to 19 and 23 degrees C after 48 and 96 h, and when transferred to 35 degrees C over 12-96 h, respectively. Respiratory burst decreased significantly when fish were transferred to 19, 31 and 35 degrees C over 24-96 h, whereas phagocytic activity and phagocytic index decreased significantly when fish were transferred to low temperatures (19 and 23 degrees C) and high temperatures (31 and 35 degrees C) over 12-96 h. Lysozyme activity decreased significantly when fish were transferred to 19 degrees C after 12-96 h, but increased significantly when transferred to 31 and 35 degrees C over 48-96 h. Alternative complement pathway (ACH(50)) also decreased significantly when transferred to 19 and 23 degrees C after 12h, but increased significantly when transferred to 31 and 35 degrees C after 24h. In another experiment, tilapia reared at 27 degrees C were injected intraperitoneally with Streptococcus iniae at a dose of 1 x 10(7)colony-forming units (cfu)fish(-1), and then reared onward at water temperatures of 19, 23, 27 (control), 31 and 35 degrees C. Over 48-168 h, the cumulative mortality of S. iniae-injected fish held in 19 and 35 degrees C was significantly higher than that of injected-fish held in 23, 27 and 31 degrees C. It is concluded that transfer of tilapia O. mossambicus from 27 degrees C to low temperatures (19 and 23 degrees C) after 12h, and transfer of fish from 27 degrees C to high temperatures (31 and 35 degrees C) reduced their immune capability. Moreover, tilapia under temperature stress at 19 and 35 degrees C from 27 degrees C decreased its resistance against S. iniae.  相似文献
