The floral development of representatives of six genera ofCistaceae has been studied. Calyx development involves the formation of a ring primordium in several taxa. Androecium development in species with intermediate or higher stamen numbers starts with the formation of a ring meristem on which the stamens are initiated in a centrifugal direction. In many taxa five alternipetalous leading stamen primordia can be observed. In the apetalous (cleistogamous) flowers ofTuberaria inconspicua androecium development appears to be unordered; this is probably due to the lack of petals. InLechea intermedia (also cleistogamous) the corolla is trimerous and three complex stamen primordia are produced, which give rise either to one or three stamens. Relationships withinCistaceae are discussed. Floral development inCistaceae is compared with that in otherMalvanae. Among the eight families ofMalvanae from which information on floral development is availableCochlospermaceae andBixaceae exhibit the greatest similarities toCistaceae. InCistaceae the leading stamen primordia are alternipetalous. InBixa the same condition seems to be present. InMalvales s. str. mostTiliaceae also show earliest stamen initiation in alternipetalous sectors, whereas the stamens of the innermost alternipetalous position are retarded early or even suppressed inSterculiaceae, Bombacaceae, andMalvaceae. WithinMalvales s. str. the diversity of androecial developmental patterns seems to decrease inBombacaceae andMalvaceae due to increasing synorganization in the mature androecium. The derivation of polyandry inMalvanae from diplo- or obdiplostemony is discussed by comparison with the sister clades ofMalvanae as shown in recentrbcL studies (i.e.Sapindales, Rutales, the glucosinolate producing clade, andMyrtales).  相似文献

During the course of infection, enteropathogenic and enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EPEC and EHEC, respectively) subvert the host cell signalling machinery and hijack the actin cytoskeleton to tighten their interaction with the gut epithelium, while avoiding phagocytosis by professional phagocytes. Much progress has been made recently in our understanding of how EPEC and EHEC regulate the pathways leading to local activation of two regulators of actin cytoskeleton dynamics, the Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome protein (N-WASP) and the Arp2/3 complex. A recent highlight is the unravelling of functions for effector proteins (particularly Tir, TccP, Map and EspG/EspG2) that are injected into the host cell by a type III secretion system.  相似文献

Background

Patients with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) commonly require hospitalization and admission to intensive care unit (ICU). It is useful to identify patients at the time of admission who are likely to have poor outcome. This study was carried out to define the predictors of mortality in patients with acute exacerbation of COPD and to device a scoring system using the baseline physiological variables for prognosticating these patients.

Methods

Eighty-two patients with acute respiratory failure secondary to COPD admitted to medical ICU over a one-year period were included. Clinical and demographic profile at the time of admission to ICU including APACHE II score and Glasgow coma scale were recorded at the time of admission to ICU. In addition, acid base disorders, renal functions, liver functions and serum albumin, were recorded at the time of presentation. Primary outcome measure was hospital mortality.

Results

Invasive ventilation was required in 69 patients (84.1%). Fifty-two patients survived to hospital discharge (63.4%). APACHE II score at the time of admission to ICU {odds ratio (95 % CI): 1.32 (1.138–1.532); p < 0.001} and serum albumin (done within 24 hours of admission) {odds ratio (95 % CI): 0.114 (0.03-0.432); p = 0.001}. An equation, constructed using the adjusted odds ratio for the two parameters, had an area under the ROC curve of 91.3%. For the choice of cut-off, sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive value for predicting outcome was 90%, 86.5%, 79.4% and 93.7%.

Conclusion

APACHE II score at admission and SA levels with in 24 hrs after admission are independent predictors of mortality for patients with COPD admitted to ICU. The equation derived from these two parameters is useful for predicting outcome of these patients.  相似文献

The Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY), which was introduced in 2008 in India, is a social health insurance scheme that aims to improve healthcare access and provide financial risk protection to the poor. In this study, we analyse the determinants of participation and enrolment in the scheme at the level of districts. We used official data on RSBY enrolment, socioeconomic data from the District Level Household Survey 2007–2008, and additional state-level information on fiscal health, political affiliation, and quality of governance. Results from multivariate probit and OLS analyses suggest that political and institutional factors are among the strongest determinants explaining the variation in participation and enrolment in RSBY. In particular, districts in state governments that are politically affiliated with the opposition or neutral parties at the centre are more likely to participate in RSBY, and have higher levels of enrolment. Districts in states with a lower quality of governance, a pre-existing state-level health insurance scheme, or with a lower level of fiscal deficit as compared to GDP, are significantly less likely to participate, or have lower enrolment rates. Among socioeconomic factors, we find some evidence of weak or imprecise targeting. Districts with a higher share of socioeconomically backward castes are less likely to participate, and their enrolment rates are also lower. Finally, districts with more non-poor households may be more likely to participate, although with lower enrolment rates.  相似文献

Steroidogenic key enzymes, i.e. delta 5-3 beta and 17 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (delta 5-3 beta and 17 beta-HSD) activities, in the testis and Bidder's organ of the toad were inhibited and ascorbic acid synthesis in these organs was decreased by a wide range of lithium concentration in in vitro study. A significant inhibition was noted at a concentration of 2.0 mM, which is easily achieved in the blood during the treatment of manic patients by lithium chloride. This experiment reflected that lithium exerts a direct inhibitory effect on hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase activities in the testis and Bidder's organ--a rudimentary ovary in Bufo.  相似文献

考察了不同提取方法对从酵母中提取谷胱甘肽(GSH)的影响,热水抽提由于其提取收率高(90%),耗时短(10min)经济性强而明显优于其它提取方法,对732阳离子交换树脂纯化GSH进行了初步研究,主要研究了树脂颗粒大小对提纯GSH的影响,采用60~80目的树脂,GSH收率为57.6%,虽然比80目以上的树脂低10%但前者操作作所需时间只有后者的1/3。  相似文献

The cytosolic protein degradation pathway, involving ATP-dependent proteases and ATP-independent peptidases, is important for modulating several cellular responses. The involvement of pathogen-encoded ATP-dependent proteases is well established during infection. However, the roles of ATP-independent peptidases in this process are not well studied. The functional role of Peptidase N (PepN), an ATP-independent enzyme belonging to the M1 family, during systemic infection of mice by Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (Salmonella typhimurium) was investigated. In a systemic model of infection, the number of CFU of S. typhimurium containing a targeted deletion in peptidase N (DeltapepN), compared with wild type, was significantly higher in the lymph node and spleen. In addition, S. typhimurium replicated in the thymus and greatly reduced the number of immature CD4(+)CD8(+) thymocytes in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Strains lacking or overexpressing pepN were used to show that the reduction in the number of thymocytes, but not lymph node cells, depends on a critical number of CFU. These findings establish a role for PepN in reducing the in vivo CFU of S. typhimurium during systemic infection. The implications of these results, in the context of the roles of proteases and peptidases, during host-pathogen interactions are discussed.  相似文献

Targeting drug formulations to specific tissues and releasing the bioactive content in response to a certain stimuli remains a significant challenge in the field of biomedical science. We have developed a nanovehicle that can be used to deliver “drugs” to “specific” tissues. For this, we have simultaneously modified the surface of the nanovehicle with “drugs” and “tissue-specific ligands”. The “tissue-specific ligands” will target the nanovehicle to the correct tissue and release the “drug” of interest in response to specific stimuli. We have synthesised a “lactose surface-modified gold nanovehicle” to target liver cells and release the model fluorescent drug (coumarin derivative) in response to the differential glutathione concentration (between blood plasma and liver cells). Lactose is used as the liver-specific targeting ligand given the abundance of l-galactose receptors in hepatic cells. The coumarin derivative is used as a fluorescent tag as well as a linker for the attachment of various biologically relevant molecules. The model delivery system is compatible with a host of different ligands and hence could be used to target other tissues as well in future. The synthesised nanovehicle was found to be non-toxic to cultured human cell lines even at elevated non-physiological concentrations as high as 100 μg/mL. We discover that the synthesised gold-based nanovehicle shows considerable stability at low extracellular glutathione concentrations; however coumarin is selectively released at high hepatic glutathione concentration.  相似文献

End buds from 4- to 5-week-old rat mammary glands were isolated and cultured within a rat tail tendon collagen gel matrix. Media containing equine serum or porcine serum and cholera toxin promoted growth, but not the production of casein or thioesterase II, nor did they induce a state of differentiation as assessed by cell ultrastructure. Medium supplemented with only 5% porcine serum, insulin and cholera toxin did not support growth or differentiation. However, when prolactin, estradiol, progesterone and hydrocortisone were added to this medium, growth was stimulated greatly and a differentiated state was induced as assessed by the production of casein and thioesterase and by the appearance of a highly secretory ultrastructure.  相似文献
