Ability of the freshwater leech, Poecilobdella viridis to withstand osmotic changes was investigated by following the fluctuations of the body weight in tap-water and in different salt concentrations. The salinity tolerance limit (lethal salt concentration) of this leech was found to be 1.54% NaCl which equilibrates approximately 51.359% sea-water. There was a significant weight loss in P. viridis when kept in both, hypo- and hypertonic media. It is concluded that volume regulation (through weight changes) was slight in hypotonic media whereas in hypertonic media there was an incessant decline in body weight. Adaptive significance of these findings is discussed. 相似文献

Seasonal reproductive cycle of the freshwater mussel, Lamellidens corrianus has been studied. These mussels are functional or simultaneous hermaphrodites. The spawning was at its peak during the months of September to December. The gonads were in growing stages with reduced gonadal activity during January to April, whereas the maturation of gonads was found to be intense during May to August. 相似文献

The effect of oxygen tension, pH and salt concentrations on the respiratory metabolism of the freshwater leech, Poecilobdella viridis has been studied. The respiratory rate increased significantly (p < 0.05) with progressive elevation of the oxygen tension of the medium and decreased significantly (p < 0.05) in both acidic and alkaline media. The respiratory rate was enhanced significantly (p < 0.05) as the salt concentration of the medium increased. Functional significance of these trends to the leech in counteracting the environmental eddies is briefly discussed. 相似文献

The toxicity of the pesticides (organophosphates) malathion, dimecron and monochrotophos was tested on the freshwater caridean prawn, Caridina weberi. The lethal concentration was determined in experiments carried out up to 96 hrs. The effect of organophosphates on the reproduction was shown by observing the histological changes in the ovary. The tissues were highly damaged, with loss of ooplasmic material, lack of distinct nucleus, nucleolus and chromatin material. 相似文献

Ablation of whole central nervous system (CNS) or pleurovisceral (PV) ganglia significantly inhibited O2 uptake, after 4 hr through 24 hr of the operation over sham controls. Replacement of PV in PV-less animals restored their metabolic rates to the normal level. O2 consumption of normal animals is significantly augmented by the macerates of CNS and PV, but not by cerebral and pleural ganglia, and body muscles. Reserpine was ineffective in lowering the O2 uptake of PV-removed animals unlike in normal, intact individuals. The possible implication of a neurohormone originating from PV ganglia controlling whole body O2 consumption, is discussed. 相似文献

Effects of bilateral eyestalks ablation and injections of eyestalks, (Es) brain (Br) and thoracic ganglia (ThG) extract separately on the androgenic gland and testis development of Es-ablated (Experiment 1) and normal (Experiment 2) P. hardwickii, were investigated. The androgenic gland activity increased significantly in prawns having Es-ablated (Group II), and eyestalkless (Groups VI & VII) and normal (Groups D & E) prawns received Br and ThG extracts, separately, as compared to their respective controls (Groups I & A). Injection of unboiled Es extract in eyestalkless (Group V) and normal (Group C) prawns arrested the androgenic gland activity. Simultaneously, there was a significant (p<0.05) increase in the diameter of testicular follicles, testis weight, testis index and number of mature spermatocytes per follicle in the prawns of groups II, VI & VII of experiment 1 and of groups D & E of experiment 2 when compared to their respective controls. Injection of Es extract into the eyestalkless (Group V) and normal (Group C) prawns ceased testicular development. A significant (<0.05) decrease in testicular protein and midgut gland glycogen and lipid was found in groups II, VI & VII of experiment 1 and in groups D & E of experiment 2, but the glycogen and lipid content of the testis increased. These results indicate that the hormones released from the neuroendocrine centres regulate androgenic gland activity and spermatogenesis. 相似文献
