Functions of α‐ and β‐branch carotenoids in whole‐plant acclimation to photo‐oxidative stress were studied in Arabidopsis thaliana wild‐type (wt) and carotenoid mutants, lut ein deficient (lut2, lut5), n on‐p hotochemical q uenching1 (npq1) and s uppressor of z eaxanthin‐l ess1 (szl1) npq1 double mutant. Photo‐oxidative stress was applied by exposing plants to sunflecks. The sunflecks caused reduction of chlorophyll content in all plants, but more severely in those having high α‐ to β‐branch carotenoid composition (α/β‐ratio) (lut5, szl1npq1). While this did not alter carotenoid composition in wt or lut2, which accumulates only β‐branch carotenoids, increased xanthophyll levels were found in the mutants with high α/β‐ratios (lut5, szl1npq1) or without xanthophyll‐cycle operation (npq1, szl1npq1). The PsbS protein content increased in all sunfleck plants but lut2. These changes were accompanied by no change (npq1, szl1npq1) or enhanced capacity (wt, lut5) of NPQ. Leaf mass per area increased in lut2, but decreased in wt and lut5 that showed increased NPQ. The sunflecks decelerated primary root growth in wt and npq1 having normal α/β‐ratios, but suppressed lateral root formation in lut5 and szl1npq1 having high α/β‐ratios. The results highlight the importance of proper regulation of the α‐ and β‐branch carotenoid pathways for whole‐plant acclimation, not only leaf photoprotection, under photo‐oxidative stress.  相似文献

Next‐generation technologies generate an overwhelming amount of gene sequence data. Efficient annotation tools are required to make these data amenable to functional genomics analyses. The Mercator pipeline automatically assigns functional terms to protein or nucleotide sequences. It uses the MapMan ‘BIN’ ontology, which is tailored for functional annotation of plant ‘omics’ data. The classification procedure performs parallel sequence searches against reference databases, compiles the results and computes the most likely MapMan BINs for each query. In the current version, the pipeline relies on manually curated reference classifications originating from the three reference organisms (Arabidopsis, Chlamydomonas, rice), various other plant species that have a reviewed SwissProt annotation, and more than 2000 protein domain and family profiles at InterPro, CDD and KOG. Functional annotations predicted by Mercator achieve accuracies above 90% when benchmarked against manual annotation. In addition to mapping files for direct use in the visualization software MapMan, Mercator provides graphical overview charts, detailed annotation information in a convenient web browser interface and a MapMan‐to‐GO translation table to export results as GO terms. Mercator is available free of charge via http://mapman.gabipd.org/web/guest/app/Mercator .  相似文献

A new barbourofelid species, Prosansanosmilus eggeri , is described from the Middle Miocene (MN 5) locality of Sandelzhausen, Germany. It differs from all other European barbourofelid species in being smaller and showing a more plesiomorphic morphology, especially in the relatively less developed sabretooth adaptations, low accessory cusps on the premolars, and the remnant of a very small talonid on the carnassial. The species is, however, stratigraphically later than the more apomorphic P. peregrinus, which is known from MN 4 of Germany and France. A phylogenetic analysis based on dental characters of early nimravids, barbourofelids and felids supports previous results on skull morphology of Barbourofelis that Barbourofelinae is not closely related to the Late Eocene and Oligocene Nimravinae. Instead, both subfamilies should be treated as separate families, with the Barbourofelidae closely related to the Felidae. The Barbourofelidae differ from the Felidae as well as from the Nimravidae s.s ., particularly in the unique morphology of their basicranium. They presumably originated in Africa; P. eggeri sp. nov. is interpreted as part of a Miocene immigration of African faunal elements into Europe that took place at the beginning of MN 5. © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 140 , 43−61.  相似文献

Feral Pigeons Columba livia live in almost every city in the world and are often a problem because of their large numbers. Knowledge of the spatial use of the city by Pigeons is important for population control management. Previous studies have given contradictory results concerning the urban area used by Pigeons and their feeding strategies. We used the global positioning system (GPS) to investigate the spatial use of urban habitats by Feral Pigeons in Basel, Switzerland. The total ranges of the subpopulations varied between 32.9 and 306.3 ha and overlapped partially. The total ranges of individual Feral Pigeons varied between 2.9 and 150.6 ha. Pigeons from a single loft had one or two main feeding places and up to 33 other places that they used for occasional feeding or for resting. Individual Pigeons visited up to ten different locations. Our study shows that Feral Pigeons have individual feeding strategies and are flexible enough to adapt to different urban environments. Therefore, we must contradict the view that Feral Pigeons are dependent on intentional feeding by humans and are unable to fly more than a few hundred metres. Our results are important for Pigeon control management, biomonitoring projects using Feral Pigeons as indicators of pollution and the study of disease transmission. Pigeon control management based on killing has only a local and temporary effect, because Pigeon subpopulations are interconnected. Pigeons from other areas will replace removed individuals. Biomonitoring projects usually assume that Pigeons show a limited mobility. Our study reveals that this is not a generally valid assumption. Because Pigeon subpopulations are connected, diseases can be spread over an entire urban area. This is of human concern, as seven infectious diseases have been shown to be transmitted from Feral Pigeons to humans.  相似文献

POPULATION GENETICS OF EUROPEAN ANODONTINAE (BIVALVIA: UNIONIDAE)   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Enzyme electrophoresis was used to study population geneticsand molecular differentiation of European Anodontmae. The existenceof two genera (Anodonta Lamarck 1799 and Pseudanodonta Bour-guignat1876) is supported by the number of diagnostic loa (4) and Net'sD > 0.463 in all cases. In western and central Europe thereare two species of Anodonta, A. anatina (Linnaeus 1758) andA cygnea (Linnaeus 1758) while two other taxa of still uncertainrank were identified in the Mediterranean area. An estimatedmedium level of gene flow and pronounced genetic differentiationbetween-the taxa support this view. Data on genetic distancessuggest that the diversification of European Anodontinae tookplace in the middle-late Pleistocene (Received 15 August 1995; accepted 5 February 1996)  相似文献

Clutches of ground‐nesting farmland birds are often destroyed by farming operations, resulting in insufficient reproductive success and subsequently declining populations. The aim of this study was to investigate whether volunteer nest protection can enhance nest success of ground‐nesting birds. The study compared nest success of protected and unprotected Northern Lapwing Vanellus vanellus nests over 2 years on arable farms in the Netherlands. Because of different crop management, nest success of ground‐breeding birds might differ between organic and conventional arable farms. The effectiveness of volunteer nest protection was therefore investigated on both farm types. Although nest protection significantly reduced nest loss due to farming operations, there were no significant differences in total clutch survival of protected and unprotected nests. However, sample sizes of unprotected nests, and protected nests on organic farms, were relatively small, which may have reduced statistical power. There were indications that protected nests were predated or deserted more often. We recommend exploring different ways to improve the effectiveness of volunteer nest protection through a further reduction of nest loss due to farming operations and predation.  相似文献

The blood‐feeding juvenile stages of gnathiid isopods are important ectoparasites of marine fishes on the Great Barrier Reef (GBR), and are a major component of the diet of cleaner fishes. We report here that these gnathiids have undergone evolutionary diversification, both geographically and temporally (into diurnally and nocturnally active taxa), which has been accompanied by changes in their morphology and behaviour. To perform this analysis, we sequenced a portion of the nuclear ribosomal ITS2 for 47 gnathiids collected from 29 host fishes of 11 species at three locales spanning 2000 km on the GBR. Maximum parsimony and Bayesian phylogenetic analyses both revealed four major clades. There was some degree of geographical structuring in these clades, but there was no evidence supporting host fish specialization, as gnathiids collected from the skin of different teleost taxa did not resolve into distinct clades. The topology of the phylogeny also implied some structuring that was dependent upon collection time (day or night), so we investigated whether there were also behavioural and morphological differences between taxa active at these different times. Nocturnal gnathiids had significantly longer antennules and larger eyes than diurnal gnathiids – two traits presumably adaptive for nocturnal activity. Behavioural tests showed that both nocturnal and diurnal gnathiids use olfaction and vision while foraging, but that nocturnal gnathiids used olfaction more often in dark conditions, and that they were able to perceive movement under extremely low levels of light. Diurnal gnathiids used vision more effectively when there was some ambient light. Our results thus suggest that both phenotypic and genotypic divergence in gnathiids may be influenced by natural selection acting on ecological traits, such as predator avoidance and host detection. © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2008, 94 , 569–587.  相似文献
