Periclinal cell divisions in vegetative shoot apices of Pisumand Silene were recorded from serial thin sections by mappingall the periclinal cell walls formed less than one cell cyclepreviously. The distribution of periclinal divisions in theapical domes corresponded to the distributions subsequentlyoccurring in the apices when the young leaf primordia were forming. In Pisum, periclinal divisions were almost entirely absent fromthe I1 region of the apical dome for half a plastochron justafter the formation of a leaf primordium and appeared, simultaneouslyover the whole of the next potential leaf site, about half aplastochron before the primordium formed. In Silene periclinaldivisions seemed to always present in the apical dome at thepotential leaf sites and also round the sides of the dome wherethe ensheathing leaf bases were to form. Periclinal divisionstherefore anticipated the formation of leaf primordia by occuring,in Pisum about one cell cycle and in Silene two or more cellcycles, before the change in the direction of growth or deformationof the surface associated with primordial initiation. Maternal pre‐reproductive experience can impose phenotypic changes on offspring traits. These modifications may result from physiological constraints, although they can also increase the adaptation of offspring to their anticipated environment. Distinguishing between the two interpretations is often difficult. The effects of virgin female rearing density on their longevity and the characteristics of their male offspring are explored in the polyembryonic parasitoid wasp Copidosoma koehleri (Blanchard) (Encyrtidae: Hymenoptera). High rearing density may adversely affect maternal physiology or, alternatively, act as a cue for anticipated competition during the lives of the mothers and their offspring. Male offspring of group‐reared females reach pupation significantly sooner than male offspring of females reared alone. This accelerated development may provide an advantage when competition from superparasitising individuals is expected. The lifespan of high‐density females is longer than that of singly‐reared females, and their male offspring survive longer, suggesting that crowded rearing does not reduce the fitness of females or offspring. The shortened development time of male offspring may reflect an adaptive epigenetic response to predicted competitive conditions.  相似文献

The growth of tree lupins was investigated in two experiments. In the first, two ages of plant, 4-wk-old seedlings and 1-year-old plants, were transplanted into a ryegrass sward in an upland environment. Growth, in terms of leaf production, branching and stem elongation, was measured over two successive growing seasons. Plant dry matter and nutrient contents were determined at the beginning and end of each growing season. In the first summer, the rate of production of new leaves on the main stem of seedling plants averaged 1.8 leaves per wk and main stem length increased from 5 to 67 cm. On older plants, where floral apices had been initiated on main and primary stems, there was a 3–10 fold increase in secondary branch length. In the second season, there was no effect of plant age on rates of leaf appearance or stem extension; dry matter production was higher than in the first season. In the second experiment, the effect of removal of 0%, 50% or 100% of fully expanded leaves on the subsequent growth of 23-wk-old plants was investigated. During the 7-wk growth period, defoliation promoted the rate of production of mature leaves, and area and dry weight of new laminae were slightly higher in defoliated plants. Defoliation did not affect the concentrations of N, P or K in the new laminae, but P and K concentrations in petioles of defoliated plants were significantly higher than those in intact plants. The results from the experiments are discussed in relation to the potential use of tree lupins as nurse species and biomass crops in hill and upland environments of the UK.  相似文献

Factors affecting the uptake and distribution of calcium (Ca)by detached tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) fruit wereinvestigated in seven cultivars with different susceptibilitiesto blossom-end rot (BER), a physiological disorder caused byCa deficiency. Plants were grown with different levels of salinityin the root zone or under shade to induce BER. In addition, fruit grown at different salinities were treated with CME, aninhibitor of auxin transport to alter IAA movement. The basipetalmovement of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) out of detached fruit(i.e. IAA efflux) was determined concurrently with 45Ca uptaketo assess the possible involvement of IAA in Ca import or theincidence of BER. High salinity in the root zone during fruitdevelopment decreased both the uptake and distribution of 43Cato the blossom-end of the detached fruit. Shading and the applicationof CME reduced 45Ca uptake to a lesser extent. IAA efflux, however, was not consistently reduced by these treatments. Neither theuptake and transport of 45Ca within, nor the efflux of IAA from, detached fruit was related to the cultivar susceptibility toBER. The proposed role of IAA on the uptake and distributionof Ca by tomato fruit is assessed. Key words: Tomato, calcium, IAA, blossom-end rot, salinity  相似文献
