The present study used abundance and habitat variables to design High Conservation Value Forests for wildlife protection. We considered great apes (Gorilla gorilla gorilla and Pan troglodytes troglodytes) as model species, and we used nest surveys, dietary analysis and botanical inventories to evaluate whether the traditional methods that use abundance data alone were consistent with the survival of the species. We assumed that setting a local priority area for animal conservation can be made possible if at least one variable (abundance or habitat variables) is spatially clustered and that the final decision for a species may depend on the pattern of spatial association between abundance, nesting habitat and feeding habitat. We used Kernel Density Estimation to evaluate the spatial pattern of each biological variable. The results indicate that all three variables were spatially clustered for both gorillas and chimpanzees. The abundance variables of both animal species were spatially correlated to their preferred nesting habitat variables. But while the chimpanzee feeding habitat variable was spatially correlated to the abundance and nesting habitat variables, the same pattern was not observed for gorillas. We then proposed different methods to be considered to design local priority areas for the conservation of each great ape species. Alone, the abundance variable does not successfully represent the spatial distribution of major biological requirements for the survival of wildlife species; we, therefore, recommend the integration of the spatial distribution of their food resources to overcome the mismatch caused by the existence of a biological interaction between congeneric species.  相似文献

Brown eye spot (BES—Cercospora coffeicola) is a major disease of coffee, and its occurrence is affected by water supply and nutritional balance. Little is known about the effect of phosphorous (P) on coffee fields under irrigation. Thus, this study evaluated the effect of the interaction between different water application levels and phosphorus levels (5 irrigation levels × 4 phosphorus levels) on the intensity of this disease. The area under the incidence progress curve (AUIPC) was calculated and subjected to analysis of variance. The progress curve of the average incidence of BES varied in both evaluation years. In Year 1 (November 2011 to December 2012), the incidence peaked on August 12, 2012 (22.45%), while in Year 2 (January 2013 to January 2014), the incidence reached its highest level on September 12, 2013 (16.29%). The exponential nonlinear model was adjusted for the two years. There was an interaction between irrigation and phosphorus levels on October 07, 2012. The incidence interacted significantly with the harvest dates. On the first evaluation date, an increase in phosphorus levels at shallower irrigation depths and an absence of phosphate fertilizer at higher irrigation levels caused higher incidences.  相似文献

Fibropapillomatosis (FP) threatens the survival of green turtle (Chelonia mydas) populations at a global scale, and human activities are regularly pointed as causes of high FP prevalence. However, the association of ecological factors with the disease’s severity in complex coastal systems has not been well established and requires further studies. Based on a set of 405 individuals caught over ten years, this preliminary study provides the first insight of FP in Martinique Island, which is a critical development area for immature green turtles. Our main results are: (i) 12.8% of the individuals were affected by FP, (ii) FP has different prevalence and temporal evolution between very close sites, (iii) green turtles are more frequently affected on the upper body part such as eyes (41.4%), fore flippers (21.9%), and the neck (9.4%), and (iv) high densities of individuals are observed on restricted areas. We hypothesise that turtle’s aggregation enhances horizontal transmission of the disease. FP could represent a risk for immature green turtles’ survival in the French West Indies, a critical development area, which replenishes the entire Atlantic population. Continuing scientific monitoring is required to identify which factors are implicated in this panzootic disease and ensure the conservation of the green turtle at an international scale.
