Sorption of Co, Cu, Ni and Zn from industrial effluents by the submerged aquatic macrophyte Myriophyllum spicatum L. 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

The submerged aquatic plant Myriophyllum spicatum L. (Eurasian water milfoil) has been suggested as an efficient plant species for the treatment of metal-contaminated industrial wastewater. The process of metal removal by plants involves a combination of rapid sorption on the surface and slow accumulation and translocation in the biomass. This study focussed on the sorption/desorption characteristics of the surface of M. spicatum for Co, Cu, Ni and Zn. Batch sorption tests with mixed metal solutions covering a range of 0, 1, 5, 10, 50 and 100 mg l−1 of each metal, were performed. For Co, Ni and Zn, the sorption process was well described by the Langmuir model, whereas sorption of Cu was better described by the Freundlich model. The biomass showed the highest affinity for Cu and Zn. Langmuir sorption maxima of Co, Ni and Zn were 2.3, 3.0 and 6.8 mg g−1 DM, respectively. At the highest initial concentration of 100 mg l−1, a maximum of 29 mg g−1 DM of Cu was sorbed onto the surface of the biomass. Desorption by 0.1 M HCl did not fully recover the metals sorbed onto the surface and there was evidence of leaching from within the biomass. Recovery of heavy metals and regeneration of the biomass by washing with 0.1 M HCl was therefore not suggested as a viable strategy. 相似文献

Diagnosis of malaria using only clinical means leads to overdiagnosis. This has implications due to safety concerns and the
recent introduction of more expensive drugs. Temperature is a major climatic factor influencing the transmission dynamics
of malaria. This study looked at trends in malaria morbidity in the low risk Kenyan district of Nyandarua, coupled with data
on temperature and precipitation for the years 2003–2006. July had the highest number of cases (12.2% of all cases) followed
by August (10.2% of all cases). July and August also had the lowest mean maximum temperatures, 20.1 and 20.2 °C respectively.
April, July and August had the highest rainfall, with daily means of 4.0, 4.3 and 4.9 mm, respectively. Observation showed
that the coldest months experienced the highest number of cases of malaria. Despite the high rainfall, transmission of malaria
tends to be limited by low temperatures due to the long duration required for sporogony, with fewer vectors surviving. These
cold months also tend to have the highest number of cases of respiratory infections. There is a possibility that some of these
were misdiagnosed as malaria based on the fact that only a small proportion of malaria cases were diagnosed using microscopy
or rapid diagnostic tests. We conclude that overdiagnosis may be prevalent in this district and there may be a need to design

In a study of 66 children with juvenile diabetes symptoms had often present for over a month before diagnosis. Though polyuria, polydipsia, and weight loss were the commonest features, other important symptoms included tiredness lethargy, and malaise. Stable expression of Rad51 siRNA was used to generate mouse hybridoma cell lines in which endogenous Rad51 levels were depleted by as much as 60%. Stable Rad51 knockdowns feature reduced homologous recombination responses. The relative ease with which stable Rad51 knockdowns were recovered was surprising, given the embryonic lethality of Rad51 ablation. Interestingly, Rad51-depleted hybridoma cell lines are characterized by reduced levels of p53 protein. Completely unexpected, was the finding that Rad51-depleted hybridoma cell lines are also reduced for the breast cancer susceptibility 2 (Brca2) protein. Additionally, hybridoma cell lines that are siRNA depleted for mouse Brca2 show a corresponding reduction in Rad51 and p53 proteins. Furthermore, cellular levels of Rad51, Brca2 and p53 can be elevated in these cell lines by ectopic expression of wild-type human Rad51 and wild-type human BRCA2. In marked contrast, hybridoma cell lines that are siRNA depleted for mouse p53 feature relatively normal Rad51 and Brca2 levels. These results suggest that cellular levels of Brca2 and Rad51 are mutually dependent on each other, and that low levels of these proteins provide selective pressure for reduction of p53, which permits cell growth. 相似文献

Determining the molecular mechanisms that lead to the development of heart failure will help us gain better insight into the most costly health problem in the Western world. To understand the roles that the actin protein plays in the development of heart failure, we have taken a systematic approach toward characterizing human cardiac actin mutants that have been associated with either hypertrophic or dilated cardiomyopathy. Seven known cardiac actin mutants were expressed in a baculovirus system, and their intrinsic properties were studied. In general, the changes to the properties of the actin proteins themselves were subtle. The R312H variant exhibited reduced stability, with a T(m) of 53.6 °C compared to 56.8 °C for WT actin, accompanied with increased polymerization critical concentration and Pi release rate, and a marked increase in nucleotide release rates. Substitution of methionine for leucine at amino acid 305 showed no impact on the stability, nucleotide release rates, or DNase-I inhibition ability of the actin monomer; however, during polymerization, a 2-fold increase in Pi release was observed. Increases to both the T(m) and DNase-I inhibition activity suggested interactions between E99K actin molecules under monomer-promoting conditions. Y166C actin had a higher critical concentration resulting in a lower Pi release rate due to reduced filament-forming potential. The locations of mutations on the ACTC protein correlated with the molecular effects; in general, mutations in subdomain 3 affected the stability of the ACTC protein or affect the polymerization of actin filaments, while mutations in subdomains 1 and 4 more likely affect protein-protein interactions. 相似文献
