Catch per unit effort (CPUE), length, weight and maturity data for Clarias gariepinus were collected during monthly gillnet surveys in the upper Okavango Delta between 2001 and 2009 to investigate their relationship with the annual flood-pulse. CPUE, condition factor (K) and the proportion of ripe-running fish (PRR) in the population followed a unimodal annual cycle that could be modelled using water temperature and flood-pulse hydrology. Increased CPUE during declining water levels was most likely a result of feeding migrations and aggregation behaviour. The observed increase in K during low floods in October and November preceded the increase in PRR, which increased mainly with increasing temperature but appeared less dependent on flow. This study provided quantitative evidence that the biology of fish in the Okavango Delta is mainly dependent on the annual flood regime and, therefore, that conservation efforts should be focused on maintaining natural flow patterns in the face of climate change and potential water extraction schemes upstream.  相似文献

Objective

To explore the prevalence and features of HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HANDS) in Botswana, a sub-Saharan country at the center of the HIV epidemic.

Design and Methods

A cross sectional study of 60 HIV-positive individuals, all receiving highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), and 80 demographically matched HIV-seronegative control subjects. We administered a comprehensive neuropsychological test battery and structured psychiatric interview. The lowest 10th percentile of results achieved by control subjects was used to define the lower limit of normal performance on cognitive measures. Subjects who scored abnormal on three or more measures were classified as cognitively impaired. To determine the clinical significance of any cognitive impairment, we assessed medication adherence, employment, and independence in activities of daily living (ADL).

Results

HIV+ subjects were impaired for all cognitive-motor ability areas compared with matched, uninfected control subjects. Thirty seven percent of HIV+ patients met criteria for cognitive impairment.

Conclusion

These findings indicate that neurocognitive impairment is likely to be an important feature of HIV infection in resource-limited countries; underscoring the need to develop effective treatments for subjects with, or at risk of developing, cognitive impairment.  相似文献

Temporary floodplains of the Okavango Delta have been suggested as important nursery sites for juvenile fish. Fish production in the Delta is dependent on how well temporary floodplains are maintained. A study was conducted to understand how floodplains function so as to put measures in place that will sustain temporary floodplains in a high productive state. During high floods, distinct microhabitats (open water, sedges and inundated terrestrial grasses) develop in which microinvertebrate community structure was assessed across such habitats during the 2009–2010 flooding season. Depth was highest (ANOVA, P < 0.05) in the open‐water microhabitat and lowest within inundated grasses. Conductivity, total phosphorus and chlorophyll a were all highest (ANOVA, P < 0.05) within inundated grasses than in other microhabitats. A total of 46 microinvertebrate taxa were identified, and they were most diverse within the sedges. The abundance of microinvertebrates was highest (ANOVA, P < 0.05) within the inundated grasses and lowest within the open‐water zone. Given that microinvertebrates are an important food source for juvenile fish, their presence in high densities within inundated terrestrial grasses is a key determinant of fish production. This suggests the need for serious consideration of the importance of temporary floodplains when formulating conservation strategies for the Okavango Delta.  相似文献

BackgroundIt is essential that clinical trial participants are representative of the population under investigation. Using HIV-associated cryptococcal meningitis (CM) as a case study, we conducted a systematic review of clinical trials to determine how inclusive and representative they were both in terms of the affected population and the involvement of local investigators.MethodsWe searched Medline, EMBASE, Cochrane, Africa-Wide, CINAHL Plus, and Web of Science. Data were extracted for 5 domains: study location and design, screening, participants, researchers, and funders. Data were summarised and compared over 3 time periods: pre-antiretroviral therapy (ART) (pre-2000), early ART (2000 to 2009), and established ART (post-2010) using chi-squared and chi-squared for trend. Comparisons were made with global disease burden estimates and a composite reference derived from observational studies.ResultsThirty-nine trials published between 1990 and 2019 were included. Earlier studies were predominantly conducted in high-income countries (HICs) and recent studies in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Most recent studies occurred in high CM incidence countries, but some highly affected countries have not hosted trials. The sex and ART status of participants matched those of the general CM population. Patients with reduced consciousness and those suffering a CM relapse were underrepresented. Authorship had poor representation of women (29% of all authors), particularly as first and final authors. Compared to trials conducted in HICs, trials conducted in LMICs were more likely to include female authors (32% versus 20% p = 0.014) but less likely to have authors resident in (75% versus 100%, p < 0.001) or nationals (61% versus 93%, p < 0.001) of the trial location.ConclusionsThere has been a marked shift in CM trials over the course of the HIV epidemic. Trials are primarily performed in locations and populations that reflect the burden of disease, but severe and relapse cases are underrepresented. Most CM trials now take place in LMICs, but the research is primarily funded and led by individuals and institutions from HICs.  相似文献

Seed passage through the gut of vertebrates can be important for seed dispersal, but might influence seed viability. The ability of seeds to germinate after ingestion by seed-eating fish is important for the population dynamics of some plant species, and significant in the evolution of plant–fish interactions. Certain fish in the Okavango Delta, Botswana, are fruit- and seed-eaters and could act as seed dispersers. We sampled 14 fish species in 2013, finding Nymphaea nouchali var. caerulea seeds in the digestive tracts of eight, most commonly in the striped robber Brycinus lateralis. Seeds extracted from the gut of this species had an overall mean germination success of 11.7%. This fish species might well be a legitimate seed disperser, having a positive effect on seed dispersal from parent plants in the Okavango Delta. The current study represents one of the first investigations of the likelihood of seed dispersal by fish on the African continent.  相似文献

The hydrological regime of the Okavango River Basin is the main driver of ecological change in the delta. The delta supports a small-scale fishery which is a source of livelihood for communities within its fringes. The fish resource is particularly important to subsistence fishers, who have limited access to socio-economic opportunities. However, fish availability is subject to 'concentration and dilution' effects because of the hydrological regime. As a copying strategy, fishers use a variety of fishing methods to effectively harvest the delta's fish community across all its trophic levels. This exploitation regime helps to maintain the delta's species diversity and only reduces fish biomass proportionally across the different trophical levels. Furthermore, fishers have developed different fish-processing techniques to preserve their harvest for low fishing season periods to cope with low food availability. The aim of this paper therefore, was to explore spatio-temporal variations in fish availability and to show how the delta's subsistence fishers cope with this dynamicity.  相似文献
