Performing arts medicine.

Arts medicine has come of age, resulting from 3 important developments over the past decade: improved methods of diagnosis and treatment, an awareness that artists suffer from special problems related to their occupation and lifestyle, and the establishment of health programs emphasizing an interdisciplinary approach to these patients. We focus on the patterns of illness afflicting performing artists, specifically dancers, singers, actors, and instrumental musicians, and explain some of the things a health care team can do in treating these patients. The conditions governing these patients'' lives--early exposure to high expectations of excellence, incessant demands for perfection, long periods of intense practicing, fierce competition, high levels of anxiety associated with performance, and uncertain careers--need to be understood. Levels of disease and disability are remarkably high, but artists often ignore symptoms. We discuss the musculoskeletal, neurologic, vocal, psychological, and other syndromes found among performers and some of the difficulties in treating them. The prevention of injury, conservative management, collaboration with teachers, and a psychotherapeutic approach are desirable. Arts medicine programs for professional consultation exist in several major cities of the United States and abroad. Although research is needed regarding the effectiveness of health care services for performing artists, the scientific literature devoted to this field is growing.     

Preventing introduction and spread of Dermanyssus gallinae in poultry facilities using the HACCP method

Preventing the establishment of ectoparasitic poultry red mite (Dermanyssus gallinae) populations is key in ensuring welfare and egg production of laying hens and absence of allergic reactions of workers in poultry facilities. Using the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point method, a panel of experts identified hazards and associated risks concerning the introduction and spread of this mite in poultry facilities. Together we provide an overview of possible corrective actions that can be taken to prevent population establishment. Additionally, a checklist of the most critical control points has been devised as management tool for poultry farmers. This list was evaluated by Dutch and British poultry farmers. They found the checklist feasible and useful.     

Characterization of Newly Formed and Aged Granules in the Neurohypophysis

Neurosecretory granules from the rat and bovine neurohypophysis were isolated and some of their biochemical and biophysical properties studied. Neurosecretory granules (NSG) from rat neurohypophysis were labeled, in vivo, with [35S]cysteine and isolated on isoosmotic gradients. Whereas 1 day after labeling most of the radioactivity was found in the lower part of the gradient, 35 days later the isotope was also located in the lighter NSG-containing fraction. Different analytical procedures showed that the lighter fraction, both in bovine and rat NSG, contain more subpopulations of neurophysin-like material than the heavier fraction. The first material to be released during stimulation of secretion, in vivo or in vitro, is mobilized from the heavy NSG. Isolation of rat NSG, at different times during and after dehydration of the animals, reveals that the newly synthesized material is found in the heavy NSG-containing fraction. Furthermore, the results indicate that the newly synthesized NSG are more resistant to lysis than the lighter granules. The results are discussed in relation to the maturation and degradation processes of the granule content and to the functional state of the NSG.     

From the Schnauzenorgan to the back: Morphological comparison of mormyromast electroreceptor organs at different skin regions of Gnathonemus petersii

The nocturnally active weakly electric fish Gnathonemus petersii is known to employ active electrolocation for the detection of objects and for orientation in its environment. The fish emits pulse‐type electric signals with an electric organ and perceives these signals with more than 3,000 epidermal electroreceptor organs, the mormyromasts, which are distributed over the animal's skin surface. In this study, we measured the metric dimensions of the mormyromasts from different body regions to find structural and functional specialization of the various body parts. We focused on the two foveal regions of G. petersii, which are located at the elongated and movable chin (the Schnauzenorgan; SO) and at the nasal region (NR), the skin region between the mouth and the nares. These two foveal regions were compared to the dorsal part (back) of the fish, which contains typical nonfoveal mormyromasts. While the gross anatomy of the mormyromasts from all skin regions is similar, the metric dimensions of the main substructures differed. The mormyromasts at the SO are the smallest and contain the smallest receptor cells. In addition, the number of receptor cells per organ is lowest at the SO. In contrast, at the back the biggest receptor organs with the highest amount of receptor cells per organ occur. The mormyromasts at the NR are in several respects intermediate between those from the back and the SO. However, mormyromasts at the NR are longer than those at all other skin regions, the canal leading from the receptor pore to the inner chambers were the longest and the overlaying epidermal layers are the thickest. These results show that mormyromasts and the epidermis they are embedded in at both foveal regions differ specifically from those found on the rest of the body. Tactical Voting in Plurality Elections

How often will elections end in landslides? What is the probability for a head-to-head race? Analyzing ballot results from several large countries rather anomalous and yet unexplained distributions have been observed. We identify tactical voting as the driving ingredient for the anomalies and introduce a model to study its effect on plurality elections, characterized by the relative strength of the feedback from polls and the pairwise interaction between individuals in the society. With this model it becomes possible to explain the polarization of votes between two candidates, understand the small margin of victories frequently observed for different elections, and analyze the polls'' impact in American, Canadian, and Brazilian ballots. Moreover, the model reproduces, quantitatively, the distribution of votes obtained in the Brazilian mayor elections with two, three, and four candidates.     

Identification of UDP-linked murein precursors as contaminants in recombinant proteins of low molecular weight.

The A(280)/A(260) ratio of a purified protein is frequently used as an indication of the purity of the preparation with respect to nucleic acids. We show here that for low-molecular-weight recombinant proteins purified from Escherichia coli, a low A(280)/A(260) ratio can also result from contamination with UDP-linked murein precursors derived from bacterial cell wall metabolism. Although these precursors are small molecules of molecular weight 1000-1200, they comigrate in gel filtration with recombinant human FKBP (MW 11,820). This gel filtration behavior, which is distinct from that of unmodified mononucleotides, does not reflect binding interactions with FKBP, but is an intrinsic property of these precursors. Therefore, these molecules would be expected to copurify with other low-molecular-weight proteins, especially in the abbreviated purification protocols made possible by freeze-thaw release of recombinant proteins from E. coli (Johnson, B. H., and Hecht, M. H. (1994) BioTechnology 12, 1357-1360). Several alternative strategies are discussed for integrating these findings into the design of improved purification procedures for low-molecular-weight recombinant proteins.     

Structure-function analysis of epidermal growth factor: site directed mutagenesis and nuclear magnetic resonance

The role of leucine-47 in determining the structure and activity of human epidermal growth factor was examined using site-directed mutagenesis. Wild type protein and four variants in which Leu47 was replaced by valine, glutamate, aspartate and alanine were produced from yeast. 1H NMR experiments demonstrated that substitution of Leu47 had little effect on the protein structure. The observed reduction in receptor binding affinity caused by the substitutions could thus be attributed to perturbation of a residue directly involved in receptor interactions.
