Summary A study of seed position in the pod ofLotus corniculatus L. cv. Mirabel (Fabaceae) suggested that reduced seed set after self-pollination is not due to an inability of the self-pollen tube to reach the end of the ovary. As in other cultivars, it has been demonstrated that cultivar Mirabel produced less seed per pod and shorter pods after self- than after cross-pollination. No differences were noted for percent germination of seeds produced by both types of pollination indicating that the number of seeds per pod is a reliable index of the ultimate productive potential of the pollination. 相似文献

The only representatives ofRubiaceae-Rubieae in Madagascar are five species ofGalium. G. thunbergianum andG. chloroionanthum are essentially afromontane species, ± widely distributed in both the African mainland and Madagascar. The new speciesG. andringitrense andG. ankaratrense are endemic to Madagascar but show close affinities to two afromontane—afroalpine groups from the African mainland, theG. simense—G. ruwenzoriense andG. glaciale complex respectively.G. polyacanthum (new combination) exhibits certain primitive morphological traits and appears to be an old Madagascan endemic without close allies. New chromosome counts for populations from the African mainland demonstrate thatG. chloroionanthum andG. simense are 4x (x=11). here to be not specific for ascorbic acid, since some of the polyphenolic substances, including flavonoids, which are known
to be widely distributed in plant tissues, are also able to reduce the acidic alcoholic silver nitrate reagent at low temperature
(0–4°C) and at pH 2 to 2.5 in dark. This method may perhaps be used for animal tissues where flavonoid pigments do not occur
in such large quantities as they do in plants. I therefore, come to the inevitable conclusion that the use of alcoholic acidic

Fungi obtained and isolated from plant material coming in from Afghanistan and intercepted at Quarantine Station, Jamrud have been described. Out of eight species of fungi isolated from different seeds, at least one is not known to occur in Pakistan. Importance of studying seed borne fungi from Quarantine point of view is discussed.

The conserved surfaces of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-1 envelope involved in receptor binding represent potential targets for the development of entry inhibitors and neutralizing antibodies. Using structural information on a CD4-gp120-17b antibody complex, we have designed a 27-amino acid CD4 mimic, CD4M33, that presents optimal interactions with gp120 and binds to viral particles and diverse HIV-1 envelopes with CD4-like affinity. This mini-CD4 inhibits infection of both immortalized and primary cells by HIV-1, including primary patient isolates that are generally resistant to inhibition by soluble CD4. Furthermore, CD4M33 possesses functional properties of CD4, including the ability to unmask conserved neutralization epitopes of gp120 that are cryptic on the unbound glycoprotein. CD4M33 is a prototype of inhibitors of HIV-1 entry and, in complex with envelope proteins, a potential component of vaccine formulations, or a molecular target in phage display technology to develop broad-spectrum neutralizing antibodies. 相似文献
