1. Larvae of antlions (Neuroptera: Myrmeleontidae) and wormlions (Diptera: Vermileonidae) display a convergently evolved sit‐and‐wait hunting strategy of building pitfall traps in sandy areas. This study investigated a sympatric population of antlions and wormlions in the lowland rainforest of Borneo for substrate moisture, particle size and temperature preferences. It was hypothesised that these animals would show different preferences regarding these microhabitat traits. 2. The results showed that antlions had a higher aversion to moisture compared with wormlions, but that wormlions had a higher preference for small‐particle sand. Furthermore, thermal preferences in antlions and wormlions were significantly different, with antlions choosing higher temperatures. 3. The detected differences between antlions and wormlions might contribute to their niche partitioning in the mixed Bornean population and thus facilitate coexistence of these animals. It is possible that the hotter and dryer microhabitat edges are preferred by antlions. 相似文献

Using Boyden's technique, a statistically significant decrease in the chemotactic activity of polymorphonuclear (PMN) leukocytes was found during the early postnatal period, i.e. in the cord blood and in blood of newborns within the first 10-15 d of life after stimulation of cells with both zymosan-activated adult serum (ZAS) and with an abacterial filtrate of Escherichia coli broth culture (ECF). After this period, the responsiveness of leukocytes to both chemotactic agents increased and remained at the same level during the whole observation period, i.e. up to the age of 6 months. Nevertheless even then it did not reach fully the responsiveness of the leukocytes of mothers and pregnant women. Zymosan-activated serum was shown to be a more potent chemotactic stimulus to leukocytes of infants as compared to the E. coli filtrate. 相似文献

Pyrroline-5-carboxylic acid reductase was purified 40-fold from soybean leaves (Glycine max L. var Corsoy). The enzyme was fairly unstable, had a broad pH optimum, and was inactivated by heat and acid; NADH and NADPH both served as cofactors. It had a higher activity with NADH (about 4 ×) compared to NADPH, but a lower Km for NADPH. NADP+ inhibited both the NADH- and NADPH-dependent activity. Sulfhydryl group blocking agents reduced the activity as did the carbonyl blocking agent, NH2OH. Thiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid and phosphate inhibited the enzyme and proline inhibited only at high concentrations. ATP, GTP, and CTP were all effective inhibitors of both the NADH- and NADPH-dependent activity. Phosphorylated nucleotide inhibition was reversed by Mg2+ ions. 相似文献

The protective effect of pig immune colostrum, serum and immunoglobulins IgG, IgM and IgA against the enterotoxic strain ofEscherichia coli O55, was studied in newborn germfree piglets. This strain produced accumulation of fluid and dilatation of intestine when
injected into the ligated ileal segment of germfree piglets, which is considered to be the typical effect of enterotoxins.
Erosion of the intestinal epithelium and penetration of bacteria into the submucosa were also observed. Immune serum, colostrum
and all the immunoglobulin classes used produced a local protective effect, IgA being most effective. The mechanism of protection

In order to better understand the antioxidant behavior of a series of polyphenolic 2′-hydroxychalcones, we describe the results of several chemical and biological studies, in vitro and in vivo. Single crystal X-ray methods elucidated their molecular structures and important intermolecular interactions such as H-bonding and molecular stacking in the crystal structures that contribute to our knowledge in explaining antioxidant activity. The results of experiments using the 1,1-diphenyl-2-dipicrylhydrazyl (DPPH) UV–vis spectroscopic method indicate that a hydroxyl group in position 5′ induces the highest antioxidant activity. Consequently, 2,2′,5′-trihydroxychalcone was selected for further study in vitro towards ROS scavenging in L-6 myoblasts and THP-1 human monocytes, where it shows an excellent antioxidant activity in a concentration range lower than that reported by most studies of related molecules. In addition, this chalcone shows a very selective activity: it inhibits the proliferation of leukemic cells, but it does not affect the normal L-6 myoblasts and human fibroblasts. In studying 2,2′,5′-trihydroxychalcone's effect on weight gain and serum glucose and insulin levels in Zucker fatty (fa−/fa−) rats we found that supplementing the diet with a 10 mg/kg dose of this chalcone (3 times weekly) blunted the increase in glucose that co-occurs with weight gain over the 6-week treatment period. It is concluded that 2,2′,5′-trihydroxychalcone has the potential to serve as a protective agent for some debilitating diseases. 相似文献

Intralocus sexual conflict (IASC) arises when fitness optima for a shared trait differ between the sexes; such conflict may help maintain genetic variation within populations. Sex‐limited expression of sexually antagonistic traits may help resolve the conflict, but the extent of this resolution remains a subject of debate. In species with alternative male reproductive tactics, unresolved conflict should manifest more in a more sexually dimorphic male phenotype. We tested this prediction in the bulb mite (Rhizoglyphus robini), a species in which aggressive fighters coexist with benign scramblers. To do this, we established replicated lines in which we increased the proportion of each of the alternative male morphs using artificial selection. After approximately 40 generations, the proportion of fighters and scramblers stabilized at >0.9 in fighter‐ and scrambler‐selected lines, respectively. We then measured several female fitness components. As predicted by IASC theory, female fecundity and longevity were lower in lines selected for fighters and higher in lines selected for scramblers. This finding indicates that sexually selected phenotypes are associated with an ontogenetic conflict that is not easily resolved. Furthermore, we suggest that IASC may be an important mechanism contributing to the maintenance of genetic variation in the expression of alternative reproductive tactics. 相似文献

The subject of investigation was Chrysanthemum x grandiflorum (Ramat.) Kitam., ‘Satinbleu’. Leaf explants and internodes were excised from the middle part of the donor sterile plant.
Two methods of explant inoculation were applied: explants were placed polarly and horizontally. Modified MS medium (Murashige
and Skoog 1962), supplemented with 11.4 μM indoleacetic acid and 2.7 μM 6-benzylaminopurine, were prepared to induce adventitious bud formation.
Four dates of explant inoculation on the medium were tested: January 15, April 15, July 15, and October 15. Thus, regeneration
occurred in winter, spring, summer, and autumn. In the present study, a more intensive regeneration in ‘Satinbleu’ chrysanthemum
was observed in summer and autumn than in spring and winter, irrespective of the kind of explant and the inoculation method. 相似文献

The aquatic herbivorous and capital-breeding moth Acentria ephemerella Denis and Schiffermüller, 1775 feeds on submerged pondweeds, Potamogeton spp., and is highly preyed upon by fish in the littoral zone. We studied the spatiotemporal within-lake variability of length, sexual size dimorphism (SSD) and sex ratio of A. ephemerella pupae and of larval population densities. Population densities at three sampling sites strongly increased from July to August and were significantly higher at the Reichenau site in July. Acentria ephemerella sex ratio was male-biased at the Güttingen and Hagnau sites, but showed unbiased or slightly biased sex ratios at Reichenau. The SSD was strongly female-biased. Female size and SSD declined during summer, possibly due to reduced food quantity/quality. The SSD was highest at Reichenau, with little to no differences between Hagnau and Güttingen. At Reichenau, the high population size in July coincided with an unbiased sex ratio, and large SSD/female size due to multiple, possibly interacting factors, including fish predation. 相似文献
