The aim of this study was to assess the effects of graded levels (0, 3, 6, 9 and 12 g/kg) of dry Sea buckthorn (SB) berries on growth performance, gastrointestinal tract (GIT) development, jejunal histomorphology, bird antioxidant status and caecal short-chain fatty acid concentration when fed to female Ross 308 broiler chickens. In addition, expression of cytokine biomarker genes in the jejunum was evaluated. The five experimental diets were fed from 7 to 21 days age to 8 pens (two birds in each) following randomisation. Feeding SB did not influence bird growth performance (p > .05). There was a linear decrease in butyric, acetic and valeric acid concentrations in caecal digesta (p < .05) and a decrease (p < .05) in crypt depth. The expression of IFNG and CD40LG responded quadratically (p < .05), peaking at 6–9 g/kg dietary inclusion of SB, respectively. Other studied variables were not affected by dietary SB inclusion (p > .05). Feeding dry SB berries up to 12 g/kg of diet did not improve the zootechnical variables of healthy commercial-strain broilers in this study.  相似文献

Dead cells of Saccharomyces cerevisiae 54 were immobilized by entrappment in polyacrylonitrile. The beads obtained were used to adsorb copper in an up-flow fixed-bed column. The effect of polymer content and cell loading were studied to optimize the porosity and the efficiency in copper removal of the biosorbent beads in a batch system. The optimal concentration of the polyacrylonitrile was assumed to be 12%(w/v) and a concentration of 0.5 g cell dry weight in 1 g polymer was most effective in adsorption of Cu2+. The adsorption capacity of this biosorbent was 27 mg Cu2+/g dry biomass at 200 mg/l initial concentration of copper ions. Adsorption of Cu2+ in a batch system was studied using different initial concentrations of the solute. The optimal conditions in the up-flow column of the following parameters were determined: flow rate, bed height, and initial concentration of Cu2+ of the solutions. Results of fixed-bed biosorption showed that breakthrough and saturation time appeared to increase with the bed height, but decrease with the flow rate and the initial concentration. The linearized form of the Thomas equation was used to describe dynamic adsorption of metal ions. As a result, the adsorption capacity of the batch system and the column system was compared. Desorption of copper ions was achieved by washing the column biomass with 0.1 M HCl at an eluent flow rate of 1 ml/min. The reusability of the immobilized biomass was tested in five consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles. The regenerated beads retained over 45% of their original adsorption capacity after five A/D cycles. Studies have linked the use of corporal punishment of children to the development of mental health disorders. Despite the recommendation of international governing bodies for a complete ban of the practice, there is little European data available on the effects of corporal punishment on mental health and the influence of laws banning corporal punishment. Using data from the School Children Mental Health Europe survey, the objective of this cross-sectional study was to examine the prevalence and legal status of corporal punishment across six European countries and to evaluate the association between parental use of corporal punishment and children’s mental health. The study found that odds of having parents who reported using occasional to frequent corporal punishment were 1.7 times higher in countries where its use is legal, controlling for socio-demographic factors. Children with parents who reported using corporal punishment had higher rates of both externalized and internalized mental health disorders.  相似文献

We investigated the circulating cytotoxic CD160+ CD8(high) subset in correlation to antiviral immunity and response to highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) in HIV+ subjects. The study included 45 treatment-naive patients receiving HAART for 18 months, retrospectively defined as good (n=29) and transient (n=16) responders. HIV-specific CD8 T lymphocyte levels were measured by IFNgamma production in response to p17 Gag, in the presence of immobilized anti-CD160 mAb. We report a significantly increased baseline level of CD160+ CD8(high) subset in good therapy responders. CD160+ CD8(high) subset correlates with CD4+ T cell count, immune activation, and viral load. CD160+ CD8(high) lymphocytes contain a high amount of Granzyme B and include virus-specific T lymphocytes in HIV-1+ subjects. Co-stimulation through CD160 molecules enhances IFNgamma production in response to p17 Gag. Therefore, the CD160+ CD8(high) subset may be useful for monitoring of virus-specific cellular immunity and predicting response to antiretroviral therapy in chronic HIV-1 infection.  相似文献

Objective

To ascertain patterns of parental smoking in the vicinity of children in Eastern and Western Europe and their relation to Tobacco Control Scale (TCS) scores.

Methods

Data on parental smoking patterns were obtained from the School Child Mental Health Europe (SCMHE), a 2010 cross-sectional survey of 5141 school children aged 6 to 11 years and their parents in six countries: Germany, Netherlands, Lithuania, Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey ranked by TCS into three level categories toward tobacco control policies.

Results

A slightly higher proportion of Eastern compared to Western European mothers (42.4 vs. 35.1%) were currently smoking in but the difference was not statistically significant after adjusting for maternal age and maternal educational attainment. About a fifth (19.3%) and a tenth (10.0%) of Eastern and Western European mothers, respectively, smoked in the vicinity of their children, and the difference was significant even after adjustment for potential confounders (p<0.001). Parents with the highest educational attainment were significantly less likely to smoke in the vicinity of their children than those with the lowest attainment. After control of these covariates lax tobacco control policies, compared to intermediate policies, were associated with a 50% increase in the likelihood of maternal smoking in the vicinity of children adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 1.52 and 1.64. Among fathers, however, the relationship with paternal smoking and TCS seems more complex since strict policy increases the risk as well AOR = 1,40. Only one country, however belongs to the strict group.

Significance

Tobacco control policies seem to have influenced maternal smoking behaviors overall to a limited degree and smoking in the vicinity of children to a much greater degree. Children living in European countries with lax tobacco control policies are more likely to be exposed to second hand smoking from maternal and paternal smoking.  相似文献

The growth and the amino acid composition of the strain Saccharomyces cerevisiae RD1 were studied in the presence of copper ions. The accumulation of biomass was inhibited with the increase of Cu2+ concentration. It should be noted that the synthesis of aromatic amino acids was promoted at lower Cu2+ concentration (100 mg·L?1), but at higher concentrations the inhibiting effect was significant. The decreases of the amino acid contents with the increase of Cu2+ concentration varied upon their type. The total amount of amino acids was much lower at 300 and 400 mg·L?1 Cu2+.  相似文献

The unfavorable safety of existing anticancer medications and the issue of multidrug resistance have fuelled the search for novel plant compounds as potential antineoplastic agents. One of the used approaches for identifying perspective candidates is based on ethnopharmacology. Curcumin is the yellow pigment of curry and has being employed in traditional Indian medicine. Within the EU it has the status of food ingredient (E100) and remains in many food additives. It is isolated from Curcuma longa L. and has been reported as NF-κB inhibitor and apoptosis inducer with antioxidant, cholesterol lowering, anti-inflammatory, anti-parasitic, antibacterial and antitumor potential. Curcumin has been shown to exert a wide spectrum of pleiotropic activities including antitumor effects and protection of the normal bone marrow. It possesses antineoplastic activity in various malignant cell lines in vitro, such as cutaneous T cell lymphoma, acute myeloid leukemia and urinary bladder cancer cells. In lymphoma and leukemia cell lines curcumin induces apoptosis as evidenced by caspase activation, PARP cleavage and oligonucleosomal DNA fragmentation. Expression of the myeloid marker CD13 (aminopeptidase N) is associated with faster apoptosis induction. In addition, curcumin causes concentration-dependent glutathione level increase. Application of curcumin in vivo resulted in protection against cisplatin-induced chromosomal aberrations (anticlastogenic effect). This finding reveals curcumin as preferable partner for combinations with antineoplastic agents in order to potentiate their activity and ameliorate the adverse effects. There is a clear need for new curcumin formulations because of its low bioavailability after oral intake. Cutaneous and intravesical curcumin applications remain a possibility for successful clinical use of curcumin.  相似文献

E. coli biofilms cause serious problems in medical practice by contaminating surfaces and indwelling catheters. Due to the rapid development of antibiotic resistance, alternative approaches to biofilm suppression are needed. This study addresses whether products released by antagonistic bacteria — Lactobacillus isolates from vaginal and dairy-product samples could be useful for controlling E. coli biofilms. The effects of diluted cell-free supernatants (CFS) from late-exponential Lactobacillus cultures on the growth and biofilm production of Escherichia coli were tested. Most of the CFS applied as 10−2 had no impact on bacterial growth, biofilm development however was influenced even by 10−4 of CFS. Initial screening by crystal violet assay showed that biofilm modulation varied between different CFS and E. coli combinations from inhibition to activation; however three of the tested CFS showed consistency in biofilm suppression. This was not due to antibacterial activity since Live/Dead fluorescence labeling showed insignificant differences in the amount of dead cells in control and treated samples. Some E. coli strain-specific mechanisms of response to the three CFS included reduction in hydrophobicity and motility. Released exoploysaccharides isolated from the three CFS stimulated sessile growth, but proteinase K reduced their inhibitory activities implying participation of protein or peptide biofilm suppression factor(s).  相似文献
