The majority of terrestrial biomass is wood, but the elemental composition of its potential consumers, xylophages, differs hugely from that of wood. This causes a severe nutritional imbalance. We studied the stoichiometric relationships of 11 elements (C, N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Zn, Mn, Cu, Na) in three species of pine-xylem-feeding insects, Stictoleptura rubra, Arhopalus rusticus (Coleoptera, Cerambycidae) and Chalcophora mariana (Coleoptera, Buprestidae), to elucidate their mechanisms of tissue growth and to match their life histories to their dietary constraints. These beetles do not differ from other Coleoptera in their absolute elemental compositions, which are approximately 1000 (N), 100 (P, Cu) and 50 (K, Na) times higher than in dead but undecayed pine wood. This discrepancy diminishes along the wood decay gradient, but the elemental concentrations remain higher by an order of magnitude in beetles than in highly decayed wood. Numerical simulation of the life history of S. rubra shows that feeding on nutrient-poor undecayed wood would extend its development time to implausible values, whereas feeding on highly decomposed wood (heavily infected with fungi) would barely balance its nutritional budget during the long development period of this species. The changes in stoichiometry indicate that the relative change in the nutrient levels in decaying wood cannot be attributed solely to carbon loss resulting from decomposer respiration: the action of fungi substantially enriches the decaying wood with nutritional elements imported from the outside of the system, making it a suitable food for wood-eating invertebrates.  相似文献

It has been shown that both IAA and ethylene application inhibit flower induction in the short-day plant Pharbitis nil. However application of IAA has elevated ethylene production in this plant, as well. Strong enhancement of ethylene production is also correlated with the night-break effect, which completely inhibits flowering. In order to determine what the role of IAA and ethylene is in the photoperiodic flower induction in Pharbitis nil, we measured changes in their levels during inductive and non-inductive photoperiods, and the effects of ethylene biosynthesis and action inhibitors on inhibition of flowering by IAA. Our results have shown that the inhibitory effect of IAA on Pharbitis nil flowering is not physiological but is connected with its effect on ethylene biosynthesis.  相似文献

Summary We have determined the chromosomal location of the human gene for gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT). This study was done by in situ hybridization of human metaphase spreads with a rat cDNA probe specific for this enzyme and constructed from two clones previously characterized in our laboratory. The final construct had a 1.6-kb-long insert covering 92% of the coding sequence for GGT. The new insert was also freed of any GC tails introduced for the cDNA cloning, because we observed that these sequences were responsible for a high background. Using this probe for the analysis of 136 human metaphase spreads, we observed a strong specific signal on chromosome 22 at the interface of q111-112 and a minor peak in q131. Thus GGT might represent a new marker for the study of certain diseases which have chromosomal abnormalities at these loci.  相似文献

Summary Microbial transformations of neutral fraction (NF) and upgraded neutral fraction (UNF) of Polish tall oil byMycobacterium sp. MB 3683 were performed. Final metabolites and yields were compared to bioconversion of pure -sitosterol. gamma-Glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) genomic sequences were isolated from rat and human libraries using a rat GGT cDNA as a cross-species hybridization probe. Characterization of the human GGT clones by restriction mapping clearly establishes that at least four different GGT genes or pseudogenes are present in the human genome. All the rat genomic clones cover a 12.5-kilobase sequence and exhibit a unique restriction pattern. A precise quantitation of the rat GGT gene copy number by Southern blot analysis demonstrates that this sequence is present as a single copy/rat haploid genome. Therefore, the GGT gene organization is different between rat and human species; this raises the possibility of different regulatory mechanisms in the two species.  相似文献

Administration of drugs such as fenfluramine, 20-40 mg/kg, and m-chlorophenylpiperazine (m-CPP), 2.5-5 mg/kg, which release serotonin or activate postsynaptic serotonin receptors, respectively, induced a dramatic decrease in the duodenal content of immunoreactive dynorphin (ir-DYN). The effect was antagonized by cyproheptadine, 1 mg/kg. Similarly, acute administration of the specific serotonin reuptake blockers fluvoxamine, 15 mg/kg, or femoxetine, 10 mg/kg, and 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), 40-160 mg/kg, evoked a marked decrease in the duodenal content of ir-DYN. A combined administration of fluvoxamine or femoxetine and 5-HTP failed to potentiate the effect of individual treatment. Only a higher dose of fenfluramine, 40 mg/kg, increased the ir-DYN content in the hypothalamus. These results suggest that the brain and gut ir-DYN is independently regulated by the serotonin system and that a serotonin mechanism might stimulate release of the gut dynorphin content.  相似文献

Summary Male mice SAS/4 were injected i.v. with239Pu citr(IV) 0.27 µCikg–1–9.99 kBqkg–1. After 1 h 30 µmol kg–1 of 3,4,3 LICAM(C), N, N, N, N-tetra-(2,3-dihydroxybenzoyl)-spermine or Na3CaDTPA as a reference compound was given intraperitoneally. After 4 days the animals were sacrified and the Pu content in livers, kidneys, femurs and carcasses was determined by the liquid scintillation method. It was found that, as compared with the control, 3,4,3 LICAM(C) removed 83% of the Pu activity deposited in the liver, 71% of that in the femur and 79% of the Pu in the whole body. The Pu content in the kidneys exceeded the control value by about 50%. Na3CaDTPA removed 96, 86, 40 and 72% of plutonium from the liver, kidneys, femurs and carcasses respectively.Tetra-DHB-spermine caused the excretion of 50, 57 and 39% of Pu from liver, bone and whole body respectively. The retention of Pu in the kidneys was increased to 400% of the control value.  相似文献

This paper contributes to the systematics, the ecology and the biology of sexual reproduction of psammobiontic macrostomid Turbellaria from a sandy beach on the eastern shore of the island Sylt. The anatomy of a new species,Paromalostomum proceracauda, is described. The cuticular structures of the genital apparatus ofParomalostomum fusculum Ax,P. dubium (de Beauchamp) andHaplopharynx rostratus Meixner are analyzed.P. fusculum is one of the most frequent turbellarians living in the sandy flats (Sandwatt) in front of the Litoralstation of the Biologische Anstalt Helgoland in List. This species shows obvious seasonal differences in it's vertical distribution. In summer,P. fusculum lives in the upper 4 cm of the sand while in winter, the animals move to the deeper strata of the sediment, were they are more protected from low temperatures.P. fusculum has an annual life-cycle. The period of reproduction lasts from May to July. The new generation hibernates in the state of male maturity and attains female maturity in spring. After the period of egg-shedding, large animals individuals are seldom found; it is supposed that they die after spawning. The mechanism of egg-shedding and the structure of the egg are described. The egg-shells ofP. fusculum are distinguished from those ofP. dubium by the presence of opercula.  相似文献

For three types of self-sucking impellers (fourand six-pipe and disk impellers) mixing power, initial point, amount of gas leaving the impeller and mass transfer coefficient were determined experimentally. Investigations were performed for two systems: water and biomass solution.From the point of view of a minimum mixing power and maximum mass transfer coefficient the best impeller has been chosen.
