We report here that a previously described cell surface antigen (Brower, Smith & Wilcox, 1980) is expressed in a segmentally repeating pattern of stripes in the epidermis and nervous system of segmented Drosophila embryos. We also report that the antigenic activity is found on two closely related cell surface glycoproteins. The pattern of expression of this antigen is reminiscent of the expression of some segmentation genes and is affected by mutation of at least two of these genes, fushi tarazu and paired. Thus these glycoproteins are candidates for cell surface molecules involved in carrying out the patterning processes controlled by segmentation genes. 相似文献

Play behavior and stress-associated behavior of a captive juvenile gorilla were observed before and after his transfer to a larger and more natural environment. The gorilla was observed for 4 months after the transfer and at 1 and 4 years after the transfer. Throughout his first month in the new environment play decreased dramatically. Although play subsequently increased again 2 months and 1 year after the transfer, it never reached the levels of play in the old environment. Four years after the move his play had decreased again to the low level of his first month in the new environment. Two of his stress-associated behaviors, coprophagy and regurgitation/reingestion, decreased after the transfer. Self-clasping behavior increased initially in the new environment and remained at high levels 1 year after the move. Four years after the move his self-clasping behavior was significantly less than at 1 year after the move; however, it continued to be significantly greater than in the old environment. These findings suggest that larger and more natural environments do not necessarily result in more play activity or a reduction in all stress-associated behavior. 相似文献

Usher syndrome is the most commonly recognized cause of combined visual and hearing loss in technologically developed countries. There are several different types and all are inherited in an autosomal recessive manner. There may be as many as five different genes responsible for at least two closely related phenotypes. The nature of the gene defects is unknown, and positional cloning strategies are being employed to identify the genes. This is a report of the localization of one gene for Usher syndrome type I to chromosome 11q, probably distal to marker D11S527. Another USH1 gene had been previously localized to chromosome 14q, and this second localization establishes the existence of a new and independent locus for Usher syndrome. 相似文献

Phasic changes in lung blood volume (LBV) during the respiratory cycle may play an important role in the genesis of the respiratory wave in arterial pressure, or pulsus paradoxus. To better understand the effects of lung inflation on LBV, we studied the effect of changes in transpulmonary pressure (delta Ptp) on pulmonary venous flow (Qv) in eight isolated canine lungs with constant inflow. Inflation when the zone 2 condition was predominant resulted in transient decreases in Qv associated with increases in LBV. In contrast, inflation when the zone 3 condition was predominant resulted in transient increases in Qv associated with decreases in LBV. These findings are consistent with a model of the pulmonary vasculature that consists of alveolar and extra-alveolar vessels. Blood may be expelled from alveolar vessels but is retained in extra-alveolar vessels with each inflation. The net effect on LBV and thus on Qv is dependent on the zone conditions that predominate during inflation, with alveolar or extra-alveolar effects being greater when the zone 3 or zone 2 conditions predominate, respectively. Lung inflation may therefore result in either transiently augmented or diminished Qv. Phasic changes in left ventricular preload may therefore depend on the zone conditions of the lungs during the respiratory cycle. This may be an important modulator of respiratory variations in cardiac output and blood pressure. 相似文献

Genetic and molecular analyses indicate that the Drosophila engrailed gene is required to distinguish posterior from anterior compartments in each segment of the developing animal. Here, the patterns of engrailed expression in the imaginal discs and ventral ganglion of Drosophila larvae are examined, using an antiserum against the engrailed protein and a novel image processing method to reduce non-specific background. As expected, engrailed expression generally is restricted to cells in the posterior compartment of the discs, and the patterns of expression allow refinements in the fate maps of the discs to be made. More significant is the finding that expression of the gene is highly variable in different regions of posterior compartments, suggesting that engrailed may do more than simply specify 'posteriorness'. In the ventral ganglion engrailed appears to be expressed by a subset of cells, primarily in the posterior regions of each segment. In wing discs from animals that are homozygous for the en1 mutation, the pattern of expression of the gene is altered, as opposed to being simply reduced uniformly in the posterior cells. 相似文献

We present complete restriction endonuclease cleavage site maps of the bacteriophage P22 chromosome for 16 enzymes with six base recognition sequences, thereby positioning 116 new sites on the chromosome. Twenty-four such restriction maps for P22 DNA, containing 162 sites, have now been completed, and three enzymes were found that did not cut P22 DNA. Our results are consistent with the ideas that ClaI does not cleave the methylated recognition sequence ATCGA(me)T or A(me)TCGAT and StuI does not cleave the methylated recognition sequence AGGCC(me)T. 相似文献

A radioimmunoassay (RIA) procedure for the determination of pmol quantitites of morphine in capsule samples of Papaver somniferum was developed. An antiserum developed against a conjugate of morphine-3-hemisuccinate-BSA was relatively specific for morphine and possessed moderated cross-reactivity with codeine and mild cross-reactivity with thebaine, but none with narceine, papaverine, or noscapine. The standard curve was linear over a range of 0.01–0.20 ng. This assay allows for the rapid, sensitive and precise determination of morphine in unpurified aqueous extracts of capsule samples. The amounts of morphine in the aqueous extracts determined by radioimmunoassay were validated by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The two methods show a high correlation coefficient (r = 0.98) with no significant difference in determinations of morphine content by RIA and HPLC. 相似文献
