Velvet beans, fast growing leguminous cover crops used in the humid tropics, are shallow rooted on acid soils. This might be due to an inherent branching pattern, to an intrinsic toxicity of the acid subsoil or to a relative preference for root development in the topsoil. Such preference could be based on soil chemical factors in the subsoil or on physical factors such as penetration resistance or aeration. In a field experiment with two species of velvet bean (Mucuna pruriens var. utilis and M. deeringiana) all topsoil was removed and plants were sown directly into the acid subsoil. Root development was neither affected by this treatment nor by P fertilization or liming. In the absence of topsoil good root development in the exposed upper layer of subsoil was possible, so the hypothesis of a toxicity per se of the subsoil could be rejected. To test whether poor root development in the subsoil in the presence of topsoil is due to an inherent branching pattern of the plant or to a relative preference for topsoil, a modified in-growth core technique was used. Local topsoil and subsoil and an acid soil with a higher exchangeable Al content were placed in mesh bags at different depths and at different bulk densities, with and without lime and/or P fertilizer. A comparison of root development in mesh bags placed in the topsoil or subsoil showed that position and thus inherent branching pattern is not important. Root development in the subsoil was poor when this soil was placed in a mesh bag in the topsoil, but in an acid soil of much higher exchangeable Al content and higher percentage Al saturation more roots developed. In a second experiment in mesh bags, bulk density of the repacked soil in the range 1.0–1.5 g cm-3 had no significant effect on root development. P fertilization and a high rate of liming of the soil placed in the mesh bag had a positive effect on root length density. It is concluded that poor root development in the acid subsoil under field conditions is due to a relative preference for topsoil. Al saturation and bulk density of the soil are not directly involved in this preference, but differences in availability of P and Mg or in Ca/Al ratios might play a role.  相似文献

Summary With a stereoscope, as used for the inspection of aerial photographs, sequential photographs of roots obtained by the endoscope method from minirhizotrons can yield much more information than hitherto. A series of photographs shows that most of the roots seen in a minirhizotron in grassland grew on the surface of the lexan tube, while there was a gap between the roots and the soil. Decay of the extensive root hair zones around the roots may make new root growth in the gap between rhizotron wall and soil invisible. Some consequences of these observations for the endoscope method are discussed.  相似文献

A review is given of the prospects for using process-oriented models of water and nutrient uptake in improving integrated agriculture. Government-imposed restrictions on the use of external inputs will increase the likelihood of (temporary) nutrient or water stress in crop production in NW Europe and thus a better understanding is required of shoot-root-soil interactions than presently available. In modelling nutrient and water uptake, three approaches are possible: 1) models-without-roots, based on empirically derived efficiency ratios for uptake of available resources, 2) models evaluating the uptake potential of root systems as actually found in the field and 3) models which also aim at a prediction of root development as influenced by interactions with environmental factors. For the second type of models the major underlying processes are known and research can concentrate on model refinement on the one hand and practical application on the other. The main parameters required for such models are discussed and examples are given of practical applications. For the third type of models quantification of processes known only qualitatively is urgently needed.  相似文献

Purpose

Based on multiple large clinical trials conducted over the last decades guidelines for implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) implantations have been evolving. The increase in primary prophylactic ICD implantations challenges us to be critical towards the indications in certain patient populations.

Methods

We retrospectively collected patient characteristics and rates of appropriate and inappropriate ICD therapy, appropriate and inappropriate ICD shock and mortality of all patients who received an ICD in the University Medical Center Utrecht (UMCU) over the years 2006–2011.

Results

A total of 1075 patients were included in this analysis (74 % male, mean age 61 ± 13 years, left ventricular ejection fraction 30 ± 13 %); 61 % had a primary indication and 58 % had ischaemic heart disease. During a mean follow-up period of 31 ± 17 months, 227 of the patients (21 %) received appropriate ICD therapy (149 (14 %) patients received an appropriate ICD shock). Females, patients with a primary prophylactic indication and patients with non-ischaemic heart disease experienced significantly less ICD therapy. Only a few patients (54, 5 %) received inappropriate ICD therapy; 33 (3 %) patients received an inappropriate ICD shock. Fifty-five patients died within one year after ICD implantation and were therefore, in retrospect, not eligible for ICD implantation.

Conclusion

Our study confirms the benefit of ICD implantation in clinical practice. Nevertheless, certain patients experience less benefit than others. A more patient-tailored risk stratification based on electrophysiological parameters would be lucrative to improve clinical benefit and cost-effectiveness.  相似文献

AimsResponse to cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) is often assessed six months after implantation. Our objective was to assess the number of patients changing from responder to non-responder between six and 14 months, so-called late non-responders, and compare them to patients who were responder both at six and 14 months, so-called stable responders. Furthermore, we assessed predictive values of six and 14-month response concerning clinical outcome.Methods105 patients eligible for CRT were enrolled. Clinical, laboratory, ECG, and echocardiographic parameters and patient-reported health status (Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire [KCCQ]) were assessed before, and six and 14 months after implantation. Response was defined as ≥15% LVESV decrease as compared to baseline. Major adverse cardiac events (MACE) were registered until 24 months after implantation. Predictive values of six and 14-month response for MACE were examined.ResultsIn total, 75 (71%) patients were six-month responders of which 12 (16%) patients became late non-responder. At baseline, late non-responders more often had ischemic cardiomyopathy and atrial fibrillation, higher BNP and less dyssynchrony compared to stable responders. At six months, late non-responders showed significantly less LVESV decrease, and higher creatinine levels. Mean KCCQ scores of late non-responders were lower than those of stable responders at every time point, with the difference being significant at 14 months. The 14 months response was a better predictor of MACE than six months response.ConclusionsThe assessment of treatment outcomes after six months of CRT could be premature and response rates beyond might better correlate to long-term clinical outcome.  相似文献

Dynamic models of tree root growth and function have to reconcile the architectural rules for coarse root topology with the dynamics of fine root growth (and decay) in order to predict the strategic plus opportunistic behaviour of a tree root system in a heterogeneous soil. We present an algorithm for a 3D model based on both local (soil voxel level) and global (tree level) controls of root growth, with development of structural roots as a consequence of fine root function, rather than as driver. The suggested allocation rules of carbon to fine root growth in each rooted voxel depend on the success in water uptake in this voxel during the previous day, relative to overall supply and demand at plant level. The allocated C in each voxel is then split into proliferation (within voxel growth) and extension into neighbouring voxels (colonisation), with scale-dependent thresholds and transfer coefficients. The fine root colonisation process defines a dynamic and spatially explicit demand for transport functions. C allocation to development of a coarse root infrastructure linking all rooted voxels depends on the apparent need for adjustment of root diameter to meet the topologically defined sap flow through this voxel during the previous day. The allometric properties of the coarse root system are maintained to be in line with fractal branching theory. The model can predict the dynamics of the shape and structure (fine root density, coarse root topology and biomass) of the root system either independently of soil conditions (purely genetically-driven) or including both the genetic and environmental effects of roots interacting with soil water supply and its external replenishment, linking in with existing water balance models. Sensitivity of the initial model to voxel dimensions was addressed through explicit scaling rules resulting in scale-independent parameters. The model was parameterised for two tree species: hybrid walnut (Juglans nigra × regia) and wild cherry (Prunus avium L.) using results of a pot experiment. The model satisfactorily predicted the root growth behaviour of the two species. The model is sparse in parameters and yet applicable to heterogeneous soils, and could easily be upgraded to include additional local influences on root growth (and decay) such as local success in nutrient uptake or dynamic soil physical properties.  相似文献

The relationships between annual wood stable carbon isotope composition (δ13C), dry season midday plant water potential, and annual growth rate were investigated to asses the ability of agroforestry species to adapt to climate changes. 6–8 stem disks from four co-occurring species (Acacia senegal, A. seyal, A. tortilis and Balanites aegyptiaca) were collected for radial growth measurements using tree-ring analysis spanning 1930–2003. Annual δ13C was measured on three tree disks per species for the period 1970–2002. Midday plant water potential was measured during the dry season. Annual radial growth and midday plant water potential ranged from 0.27 to 9.12 mm and −1.0 to −5.0 MPa, respectively, with statistically significant differences. After correcting annual wood δ13C for atmospheric changes in δ13C, carbon isotopic composition ranged from −22.22 to −26.58‰. Relationships between δ13C, radial growth and plant water potentials revealed the interaction of water availability, stomatal conductance, δ13C values and growth. Two contrasting water use strategies and competitive advantages can be distinguished. Species with lower mean δ13C values (A. senegal and A. seyal) show high plant water potential and, hence, better growth during moist years. Thus, they indicate low water use efficiency (WUE) and opportunistic water use strategy. On the other hand, species with lower water potentials (A. tortilis and B. aegyptiaca) showed relative better growth performance and less increase in δ13C in drought years, reflecting their high WUE and conservative water use strategy. These results suggest that δ13C in tree rings can be useful in estimating historic changes in plant WUE and hence in screening drought tolerant species in the face of expected climate changes, as well as for assessing the functional diversity and risk reduction in mixed vegetation.  相似文献

The human TAR RNA-binding protein (hTRBP) and protein activator of protein kinase R (hPACT) are important players in RNA interference (RNAi). Together with hArgonaute2 (hAgo2) and hDicer they have been reported to form the RISC-loading complex (RLC). Among other functions, hTRBP was suggested to assist the loading of hAgo2 with small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) within the RLC. Although several studies have been conducted to evaluate the specific functions of hTRBP and hPACT in RNAi, exact mechanisms and modes of action are still unknown. Here, we present a biochemical study further evaluating the role of hTRBP and hPACT in hAgo2-loading. We found that both proteins enhance hAgo2-mediated RNA cleavage significantly; even a hAgo2 mutant impaired in siRNA binding shows full cleavage activity in the presence of hTRBP or hPACT. Pre-steady state binding studies reveal that the assembly of wildtype-hAgo2 (wt-hAgo2) and siRNAs remains largely unaffected, whereas the binding of mutant hAgo2-PAZ9 to siRNA is restored by adding either hTRBP or hPACT. We conclude that both proteins assist in positioning the siRNA within hAgo2 to ensure optimal binding and cleavage. Overall, our data indicate that hTRBP and hPACT are part of a regulative system of RNAi that is important for efficient target RNA cleavage.  相似文献
