Objective

The biological importance of calcifications occasionally noted in fetal tissues (mainly liver) at autopsy or ultrasound is largely unexplored. Previous reports hint at an association to infection, circulatory compromise, malformations or chromosomal abnormalities. To identify factors associated with calcifications, we have performed a case-control study on the largest cohort of fetuses with calcifications described thus far.

Methods

One-hundred and fifty-one fetuses with calcifications and 302 matched controls were selected from the archives of the Department of Pathology, Karolinska University Hospital. Chromosome analysis by karyotyping or quantitative fluorescence-polymerase chain reaction was performed. Autopsy and placenta reports were scrutinized for presence of malformations and signs of infection.

Results

Calcifications were mainly located in the liver, but also in heart, bowel, and other tissues. Fetuses with calcifications showed a significantly higher proportion of chromosomal abnormalities than controls; 50% vs. 20% (p<0.001). The most frequent aberrations among cases included trisomy 21 (33%), trisomy 18 (22%), and monosomy X (18%). A similar distribution was seen among controls. When comparing cases and controls with chromosomal abnormalities, the cases had a significantly higher prevalence of malformations (95% vs. 77%, p=0.004). Analyzed the other way around, cases with malformations had a significantly higher proportion of chromosomal abnormalities compared with controls, (66% vs. 31%, p<0.001).

Conclusion

The presence of fetal calcifications is associated with high risk of chromosomal abnormality in combination with malformations. Identification of a calcification together with a malformation at autopsy more than doubles the probability of detecting a chromosomal abnormality, compared with identification of a malformation only. We propose that identification of a fetal tissue calcification at autopsy, and potentially also at ultrasound examination, should infer special attention towards co-existence of malformations, as this would be a strong indicator for a chromosomal abnormality.  相似文献

Variation in leaf and shoot hydraulic conductance was examined on detached shoots of silver birch (Betula pendula Roth), cut from the lower third (shade leaves) and upper third of the crown (sun leaves) of large trees growing in a natural temperate forest stand. Hydraulic conductances of whole shoots (K S), leaf blades (K lb), petioles (K P) and branches (i.e. leafless stem; K B) were determined by water perfusion using a high-pressure flow meter in quasi-steady state mode. The shoots were exposed to irradiance of photosynthetic photon flux density of 200–250 μmol m−2 s−1, using different light sources. K lb depended significantly (P < 0.001) on light quality, canopy position and leaf blade area (A L). K lb increased from crown base to tree top, in parallel with vertical patterns of A L. However, the analysis of data on shade and sun leaves separately revealed an opposite trend: the bigger the A L the higher K lb. Leaf anatomical study of birch saplings revealed that this trend is attributable to enhanced vascular development with increasing leaf area. Hydraulic traits (K S, K B, K lb) of sun shoots were well co-ordinated and more strongly correlated with characteristics of shoot size than those of shade shoots, reflecting their greater evaporative load and need for stricter adjustment of hydraulic capacity with shoot size. K S increased with increasing xylem cross-sectional area to leaf area ratio (Huber value; P < 0.01), suggesting a preferential investment in water-conducting tissue (sapwood) relative to transpiring tissue (leaves), and most likely contributing to the functional stability of the hydraulic system, essential for fast-growing pioneer species.  相似文献

The aim of our longitudinal study was to investigate the relationships between physical activity and bone mass in boys with different body mass status during the years surrounding pubertal growth spurt. Two hundred and six boys entering puberty took part in this study. The subjects were divided into underweight (), normal weight (), overweight () and obese () groups at baseline according to age related categories. Whole-body DXA scans were performed at baseline, after 12 and 24 months to assess body composition (lean body mass, fat mass), and total body (TB), lumbar spine (LS) and femoral neck (FN) bone mineral density (BMD) parameters. Physical activity was measured by 7- day accelerometry. For longitudinal analysis, multilevel fixed effects regression models were constructed. Biological age, height and lean body mass had an effect for explanation of TB BMD, FN BMD and LS BMD. Moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA), vigorous physical activity (VPA) and sedentary time (SED) had the significant effect only on FN BMD. Being an underweight boy at the baseline indicated greater chance (p<0.01) to have lower TB BMD in the future (2 years at follow up) development, compared to normal weight (estimates = −0.038), overweight (estimates = −0.061) and obese boys (estimates = −0.106).  相似文献

Fluctuations in local weather conditions and other stochastic processes are important factors affecting species population persistence. We studied two differently sized populations of the rare and declining fern species Botrychium multifidum for 4 and 5 years, respectively. Individually marked plants in permanent plots were followed to detect trends in population size, reproductive success and dormancy in relation to local precipitation and temperature. Our applied logistic regression model suggests that the shortage of precipitation during summer decreases fertility in the next year in both populations. Invertebrate herbivory of the fertile part of the plant additionally diminishes the output of spores. We found the population size to be stable with a very low percentage of each population composed of juvenile plants. Stochastic processes and low recruitment could easily lead to the extinction of these populations.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to investigate the relationships between specific anthropometric (9 skinfolds, 13 girths, 8 lengths and 8 breadths), body composition (body fat %, fat free mass [FFM], fat mass [FM]) parameters and bone mineral parameters (bone mineral density [BMD], bone mineral content [BMC) in young rhythmic gymnasts and same age controls. Eighty nine 7-8-year-old girls participated in this study and were divided to the rhythmic gymnast's (n = 46) and control (n = 43) groups. Body composition was determined by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (FFM, FM, body fat %, BMD and BMC). Body fat % and FM were lower and BMD and BMC values at lumbar spine (L2-L4) and femoral neck were higher in rhythmic gymnasts compared with controls. All measured skinfold thicknesses were thicker in controls. In girths, lengths and widths there were only few significant differences between the groups. Stepwise multiple regression analysis indicated that skinfold thicknesses (supraspinale and medial calf) influenced L2-L4 BMD only in controls 38.2% (R2x100). Supraspinale and iliac crest skinfold thicknesses characterised L2-L4 BMC 43.9% (R2x100). Calf girths influenced BMD in L2-L4 52.3% (R2x100) in controls. BMC in L2-L4 was dependent only on mid-thigh girths 35.9% (R2x100). BMD in L2-L4 was dependent on tibiale-laterale height 30.0% (R2x100). Biiliocristal breadths together with sitting height characterised BMC in L2-L4 BMD 62.3% (R2x100). In conclusion, we found that the relationships between anthropometry, body composition and bone parameters in young rhythmic gymnasts are weak. In control group first of all lower body anthropometric parameters significantly correlated with BMD and BMC in spine.  相似文献

The purpose of study was to comparatively characterize the oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) and function of respiratory chain in mitochondria in human gastric corpus mucosa undergoing transition from normal to cancer states and in human gastric cancer cell lines, MKN28 and MKN45. The tissue samples taken by endobiopsy and the cells were permeabilized by saponin treatment to assess mitochondrial function in situ by high-resolution oxygraphy. Compared to the control group of endobiopsy samples, the maximal capacity of OXPHOS in the cancer group was almost twice lower. The respiratory chain complex I-dependent respiration, normalized to complex II-dependent respiration, was reduced that suggests deficiency of complex I, but the respiratory control by ADP in the presence of succinate was increased. Similar changes were observed also in mucosa adjacent to cancer tissue. The respiratory capacity of MKN45 cells was higher than that of MKN28 cells, but both types of cells exhibited a deficiency of complex I of the respiratory chain which appears to be an intrinsic property of the cancer cells. In conclusion, human gastric cancer is associated with decreased respiratory capacity, deficiency of the respiratory complex I of mitochondria, and improved coupling of succinate oxidation to phosphorylation in tumor tissue and adjacent atrophic mucosa. Detection of these changes in endobiopsy samples may be of diagnostic value.  相似文献
