The growth OfRhizoctonia solani in different carbohydrates was studied. The rate of growth of the fungus was traced by taking the dry weights of mycelia obtained from the carbohydrate medium at regular intervals and shifts in the pH were recorded. Different carbohydrate sources had different effects on the growth of the organism. The exoenzymes from the organism were capable of cleaving carbohydrates irrespective of whether the fungus grew in them or not. 相似文献

Procedures are deseribed for the efficient isolation of protoplasts from a variety of oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) tissues. Various factors including donor source, composition of enzyme mixture and culture medium affected the yield and viability of the protoplasts Polyembryogenic cultures of oil palm were the most suitable starting material in terms of yield, viability and metabolic competence. Pectolyase Y-23 in association with cellulase and hemicellulase was required for the efficient release of protoplasts from the oil palm tissues. Ensuring food security for the rapidly increasing population and changing climatic scenarios are requisites for
exploiting the genetic divergence of food crops. A study was undertaken to sort out an early maturing chickpea
variety for fitting easily between rice-rice cropping systems in the Eastern Indo-Gangetic Plain of Bangladesh. The
trial was comprised of eight elite lines of chickpea and executed at various localities in Bangladesh from 2014–
15 to 2017–18. The result explored the chickpea genotype, BARI Chola-11 remained superior to the rest of
the elite genotypes for having a short maturity period (100–106 days), and lesser days to 50% flowering (47–
55 days). The same genotype was recorded to have robust vegetative and reproductive yield attributes including
plant height (49–57 cm), podsplant−1 (37–50), and optimum 100 seed weight (19.5–20.6 g). Owing to better yield
attributes, BARI Chola-11 resulted in the maximum seed yield (1200–1500 kg ha−1
) of chickpea and might be
recommended for general adoption in the region for boosting nutritional security status through improved productivity under changing climate. 相似文献

Alkali extracted mycelial biomass from Aspergillus niger, referred to as Biosorb, was found to sequester metal ions (Cd2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Ni2+ and Co2+) efficiently both from dilute and concentrated solutions upto 10% of its weight (w/w). Sequestration of metal ions from a mixture was also efficient but with attendant antagonisms. The kinetics of metal binding by Biosorb indicated that it is a rapid process and about 70–80% of the metal is removed from solution in 5 min followed by a slower rate. The mechanism of metal binding is shown to be due to exchange of calcium and magnesium ions of the Biosorb during which equimolar concentrations of both the ions were released into the medium. Following this an efficient procedure for the regeneration and reuse of Biosorb was standardized by washing the biosorbent with calcium and magnesium solution (0.1 m). Biosorbents prepared from Neurospora, Fusarium and Penicillium also exhibited similar mechanisms for metal ion binding, though they had a lower metal binding capacity when compared with Biosorb. Chemical modification of carboxylic acid functional groups of the Biosorb resulted in loss of 90% of metal binding capacity which could not be restored even on regeneration. The significance of this finding on the metal sequestration mechanisms of microbial biosorbents is discussed. 相似文献

Annual gross primary productivity in mesotrophic Shahidullah Hall pond (Dhaka, Bangladesh) was 1383.35 g C m−2 y−1 (arithmetic mean). Summary Diets containing 8 or 15% protein from casein plus limiting amino acids, 25% fat and adequate levels of other nutrients for rat growth were supplemented with 0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 or 4% of excess L-threonine. Addition of up to 1% excess threonine had little effect on weight gains or food intakes of weanling rats, but addition of 2 and 4% threonine caused a drastic reduction in weight gains or food intakes (up to 41%); the adverse effect being more severe in rats fed lower protein diets. Addition of graded levels of excess threonine resulted in (5 to 47-fold and 4 to 20-fold) increase in concentration of free threonine in rat plasma and brain, respectively. BackgroundThe purpose of this study was to assess the impact of coincidental radiotherapy on the volume of the non-malignant prostate gland in rectal cancer patients treated with neo-adjuvant radiotherapy.Materials and methodsIn this retrospective analysis, thirty male patients with rectal cancer who had neoadjuvant radiotherapy met the inclusion criteria. These patients had pre-treatment magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and at least one post-treatment MRI of the pelvis and the whole of their prostate volume received the full prescribed radiotherapy dose; 45 Gy in 25 fractions (n = 22), 45 Gy in 20 fractions (n = 4) and 25 Gy in 5 fractions (n = 4).ResultsThe median age of this patient cohort was 66 years (range: 30–87). With a median interval between pre-treatment MRI and first MRI post-treatment of 2 months (range: 1–11), the mean prostate volume reduced from 36.1 cm3 [standard deviation (SD) 14.2] pre-radiotherapy to 31.3 cm3 (SD 13.0) post radiotherapy and this difference was significant (p = 0.0004).ConclusionRadiotherapy may cause shrinkage in volume of normal (non-malignant) prostate. Further research is required in this field, since these results may be of some comfort to men contemplating the consequences of radiotherapy on their quality of life. Upper airway dilator activity during sleep appears to be diminished under conditions of enhanced sleep propensity, such as after sleep deprivation, leading to worsening of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep propensity originates in sleep-active neurons of the preoptic area (POA) of the hypothalamus and is facilitated by activation of POA warm-sensitive neurons (WSNs). We hypothesized that activation of WSNs by local POA warming would inhibit activity of the posterior cricoarytenoid (PCA) muscle, an airway dilator, during NREM sleep. In chronically prepared unrestrained cats, the PCA exhibited inspiratory bursts in approximate synchrony with inspiratory diaphragmatic activity during waking, NREM, and REM. Integrated inspiratory PCA activity (IA), peak activity (PA), and the lead time (LT) of the onset of inspiratory activity in PCA relative to diaphragm were significantly reduced in NREM sleep and further reduced during REM sleep compared with waking. Mild bilateral local POA warming (0.5-1.2 degrees C) significantly reduced IA, PA, and LT during NREM sleep compared with a prewarming NREM baseline. In some animals, effects of POA warming on PCA activity were found during waking or REM. Because POA WSN activity is increased during spontaneous NREM sleep and regulates sleep propensity, we hypothesize that this activation contributes to reduction of airway dilator activity in patients with OSA. 相似文献

Bone homeostasis is maintained by a dynamic balance between bone resorption by osteoclasts and bone formation by osteoblasts. Since excessive osteoclast activity is implicated in pathological bone resorption, understanding the mechanism underlying osteoclast differentiation, function and survival is of both scientific and clinical importance. Osteoclasts are monocyte/macrophage lineage cells with a short life span that undergo rapid apoptosis, the rate of which critically determines the level of bone resorption in vivo. However, the molecular basis of rapid osteoclast apoptosis remains obscure. Here we report the role of a BH3-only protein, Noxa (encoded by the Pmaip1 gene), in bone homeostasis using Noxa-deficient mice. Among the Bcl-2 family members, Noxa was selectively induced during osteoclastogenesis. Mice lacking Noxa exhibit a severe osteoporotic phenotype due to an increased number of osteoclasts. Noxa deficiency did not have any effect on the number of osteoclast precursor cells or the expression of osteoclast-specific genes, but led to a prolonged survival of osteoclasts. Furthermore, adenovirus-mediated Noxa overexpression remarkably reduced bone loss in a model of inflammation-induced bone destruction. This study reveals Noxa to be a crucial regulator of osteoclast apoptosis, and may provide a molecular basis for a new therapeutic approach to bone diseases. 相似文献
