Abstract A cluster of five to seven AKH-like immunoreactive cells lie in each lobe of the paired corpora cardiaca of the true armyworm, Pseudaletia unipuncta. These cells form a mesh work of immunoreactive processes within the corpora cardiaca, and immunoreactive tracts projecting posteriorly over the aorta.
Reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography of extracts of the corpora cardiaca of P.unipuncta revealed a single large U.V. absorbent peak with a retention time identical to synthetic Manduca- AKH. Amino acid analysis of the contents of this peak yielded a composition identical to that of synthetic Manduca-AKH which was analysed in a parallel manner. Furthermore the material within the peak possessed adipokinetic activity when bioassayed in day 2 adult male P. unipuncta. The corpora cardiaca of similar individuals were found to contain approximately 17.6ng (17.6pmol) of Manduca-AKH equivalents per pair.
Injection of Manduca-AKH into 2-day-old adult male P.unipuncta resulted in a dose-dependent elevation in haemolymph lipid levels with a maximum level of 80–90μmg/μl obtained with 5–10 ng of Manduca-AKH. Continuous flight also elevated haemolymph lipid levels in day 4 adult males with a significant elevation evident in the first samples taken after 15 min of flight and lipid levels plateauing at approximately 100 μg/μl by about 60 min of flight.  相似文献

THE OCCURRENCE AND ADAPTIVE SIGNIFICANCE OF NOCTURNAL HABITS IN WATERFOWL   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
This paper reviews the occurrence of nocturnal activity, particularly foraging, in wildfowl (Anseriformes) and shorebirds (Charadrii), and discusses its significance. Many duck species are mainly active at night while others regularly feed during both the day and night. Some ducks and geese are normally day feeders and occasionally forage during darkness. In a few duck species, courtship also has been observed at night. Most shorebirds forage both by day and night, in temperate and in tropical latitudes. Some are mainly crepuscular and nocturnal feeders and also display at dusk and at night. Some species may use their daytime territory at night. A few shorebird species, including some visual peckers and long-billed tactile probers, use the same foraging method to detect and capture food by night as by day. However, some long-billed species that forage visually during daytime modify their feeding techniques and rely completely or partly on tactile means for detecting prey at night. Large eyes seem an advantage to plovers and other sight feeders for night feeding. Numerous touch-sensitive corpuscles in the bill of ducks and many scolopacid species favour tactile feeding. Some ducks, geese and shorebirds may especially use moonlit nights for feeding though, in a few species, moonlight seems to have no effect. The possible role of bioluminescence is also discussed. Nocturnal activity may occur for two reasons. The night may be preferred because foraging is more profitable or safest from predators. Alternatively, birds may be forced to forage at night because they fail to collect all their food requirements during the day. The evidence for both hypotheses is reviewed. Nocturnal activity does appear to allow wildfowl, and perhaps shorebirds, to avoid diurnal predators (including man). Shorebirds, and some ducks also seem to take advantage of prey that are more abundant and/or accessible at night. The main evidence for the supplementary feeding hypothesis comes from studies of seasonal variations in the occurrence of nocturnal feeding, about which rather little is known at present. The increasing availability of modern night-viewing equipment may help to fill this gap. There are two important implications arising from the widespread occurrence of nocturnal activity in wildfowl. Most knowledge on time and energy budgets is based on daytime studies, and so may need to be revised. Wintering dabbling ducks and shorebirds, at least in some regions, may use different habitats by day and by night. If confirmed, there would be a need to preserve some wintering habitats which, although little used by ducks and shorebirds during the day, may be intensively used at night.  相似文献

Responsiveness of Pseudaletia unipuncta males to the female sex pheromone   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
ABSTRACT. In wind tunnel experiments male response to different concentrations of synthetic pheromone varied with age. At 25°C responsiveness increased up to day 5 and then declined slightly on day 7. For any given age the level of response generally increased with an increase in pheromone concentration. Males held at 15°C (since emergence) showed a continual increase in responsiveness with age; however, overall response levels were less than at 25°C. At 25°C male response to low concentrations of pheromone (10 and 30 μg) varied markedly over a 24 h period but no differences were observed at higher concentrations (100 and 300 μg).  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Adults of many species of Lepidoptera, principally the males, frequent mud puddles, edges of streams, carrion and animal excreta where they imbibe moisture, an activity referred to as 'puddling' Sodium ions are the only known stimulus present which cause males of at least two lepidopteran species to drink for extended periods. In the European skipper Thymelicus lineola (Ochsenheimer) (Lepidoptera: Hesperiidae), only males puddle, even though they have concentrations of abdominal sodium 2–3 times that of females at emergence. During their first mating, males transfer 32% of their abdominal sodium to females. This could be of considerable importance given that an average egg complement contains >50% of the total body sodium of females at emergence. Virgin females, as well as having reduced fecundity, have reduced longevity. This is attributed to virgins not obtaining important nutrients which males transfer to females during mating. Access to sodium ions increases the total number of matings by c. 50% for males living >15 days. Access to sodium ions by once-mated males increases the percentage of males which re-mate on the day following first mating; the percentage of females, mated to the twice-mated males, which lay >50% fertile eggs; and the drought resistance of eggs laid by those females.  相似文献

A study was carried out in northeastern Venezuela to determine whether or not shorebirds feed at night in tropical environments. Results show that some Neotropical residents and Nearctic winter migrants feed during darkness. During daylight, Black-winged Stilts Himantopus himantopus, mexicanus group, were predominantly visual foragers (75% attempts were pecking), performing a tactile type of feeding technique (immersion of the whole head and portion of the neck while searching for food through soft mud) on other occasions. During night-time, they were almost equally visual (pecking) and tactile (multiple scythelike sweeps) foragers. Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs Tringa melanoleuca and T. flavipes foraged visually during daylight and tactilely (sidesweeping) at night. Short-billed Dowitchers Limnodromus griseus were tactile feeders (probers) both by day and by night while Semipalmated Plovers Charadrius semipalmatus during daylight and at night and Wilson's Plovers C. tvilsonia by night were sight feeders (peckers). Prey abundance was higher at night than during daylight. Black-winged Stilts and yellowlegs seemed to feed at night on food items at least partly different from those they fed upon during daylight.  相似文献

Variations in bird abundance in tropical arid and semi-arid habitats   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Temporal variation in bird abundance was studied during a complete annual cycle in a thorn scrub, a thorn woodland and a deciduous forest in northeastern Venezuela. Abundance of site-attached and transient birds from different feeding guilds was determined by mist-netting at 2-week intervals. Diets were investigated by regurgitated samples. The overall avifauna was characterized by a low number of species but they were present all year despite showing strong seasonal fluctuations in abundance. The number of bird species and individuals peaked before and after the reproductive period. These high values probably were associated with movement of species feeding on plant food during the late dry season and the post-breeding dispersion of juveniles. Bird richness and abundance were lowest during the breeding season and in the early dry season when food abundance was low. Birds from different feeding guilds showed distinct patterns of seasonal abundance which tended to be similar at all three sites. Transient birds represented a large portion of the avifauna, particularly in nectarivores, frugivores and granivores during the dry season. We used a canonical correspondence analysis to demonstrate that bird abundance was correlated with breeding activity, rainfall seasonality and food abundance, with the influence of each parameter varying according to feeding guilds, spatial behaviour of individuals and habitats. Despite a great turnover in the occurrence of the diverse food types available, species composition remained strikingly constant during the year, with birds responding to seasonal changes primarily through a generalist feeding habit and a highly variable rate of transience.  相似文献

Tyrosinase may protect against oxidative stress by using the superoxide anion (O?2) in the production of melanin. We have examined this by comparing its cytotoxic effects in B16/F10 and B16/F10-differential deficient (-DD) mouse melanoma cells that express high and low levels of tyrosinase activity respectively. Xanthine oxidase (XO) was used to generate O?2 and cytotoxicity assessed by measuring cell survival. XO increased O?2 concentrations and 3 h later dose related decreases in cell survival were seen. F10 cells were more resistant to these cytotoxic effects than the F10-DD cells. [Nle4,DPhe7]MSH increased tyrosinase activity and melanin content, reduced O?2 concentration and increased the resistance of F10 cells to the cytotoxic effects of O?2. No such effects were seen in F10-DD cells. The effect of [Nle4,DPhe7]MSH on the resistance of the F10 cells was time-dependent and noticeable when tyrosinase activity but not melanin was increased. This suggests that it was the activation of tyrosinase rather than the increase in the melanin that provided the protection against O?2. In support of this, inhibition of tyrosinase with phenylthiocarbamide reduced the increased resistance induced by [Nle4,DPhe7]MSH. Moreover, although melanin was capable of scavenging O?2 it had little effect at concentrations comparable to those in the activated F10 cells. XO also increased the melanin content of F10 but not F10-DD cells. We conclude that tyrosinase is able to utilise O?2 to produce melanin and this provides pigment cells with a unique anti-oxidant mechanism.  相似文献

This study was carried out to determine whether or not, and under what conditions, Willets Catoptrophorus semipalmatus and Whimbrel Numenius phaeopus continue to defend and use their daytime feeding territories at night in a tropical environment. The study was conducted in coastal Venezuela by registering, by night and by day, the behaviour and the position of colour-marked and radio-tagged birds. Night observations were made with the use of a light intensifier.
In Willets, both territorial and non-territorial birds were observed. The use and defence of territories was observed only on sandy mud areas where Fiddler Crabs Uca cumulanta were plentiful; the soft mud sites were used only by non-territorial birds. All Whimbrel were territorial. Individuals of both species defending a given space during daytime continued to occupy and defend the same area during the night. The proportion of birds foraging at night was higher on moonlit than on moonless nights. Territorial defence involved alert postures, parallel walks, calls and the chasing of intruders. Agonistic encounters between Willets and Whimbrel and other species were rare. Willets were territorial at all states of the tide except when high tides flooded the territories. Tide had no effect on the time of feeding in Whimbrel. Moonlight was clearly the factor conditioning the occurrence of nocturnal foraging on territories by both species. Foraging strategies and the type of prey and substrata explain why the incidence of night foraging varied with moonlight in territorial Willets and Whimbrels and not in non-territorial individuals.  相似文献
