Expansion growth is limited if the difference between day and night temperature (DIF) is negative. Growth is also limited high salinity. Expansion growth of tomato seedlings was studied under day/night temperatures of 16/24°C and 24/16°C, and nutrient solution salinities of 3 and 15 mS cm-1 to ascertain whether interactions exist between the two stress forms. Water status was also studied in order to assess possible mechanisms of growth retardation. A significant interaction between DIF and salinity was found for all recorded growth variables. Hypocotyl length, plant height, leaf area and fresh and dry weight were lower at negative DIF than at positive, the reduction being greater at low salinity than at high. Increased salinity also reduced growth, more so at positive DIF than at negative. Growth reduction at negative DIF was accompanied increased shoot water and osmotic potentials. Pressure potential was unaffected DIF. Growth reduction at high salinity was accompanied reduced water and osmotic potentials. Pre-dawn pressure potential was increased at high salinity, whereas no effect of salinity on pressure potential at midday was found. The differences in effects on water status between the two stress forms may suggest differing mechanisms of growth retardation.  相似文献

Scanning Electron Microscopy of Microorganisms on Chicken Skin   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
1. Scanning electron microscopy was used to examine microorganisms in situ on chicken skin. They developed in a layer of material on the surface of the skin. The observations explain the relative ineffectiveness of carcass cleaning procedures and the increased recovery of microorganisms by destructive compared with non-destructive sampling techniques.  相似文献

Abstract. Communal oviposition by the Simulium damnosum complex of Afrotropical blackflies (Diptera: Simuliidae) was investigated under controlled laboratory conditions, using wild-caught flies in Sierra Leone. Volatile compounds emitted by Simulium eggs were trapped using a closed collection system, and their attractiveness to gravid flies was tested in a two-choice behavioural bioassay. Significantly more female blackflies oviposited on substrates baited with freshly laid eggs (100% chose the baited substrate), or with the volatiles collected from freshly laid eggs (85% chose the baited substrate), in preference to the relevant control substrates. Substrates baited with volatiles from 12-h-old eggs were not significantly more attractive than controls (only 31% chose the baited substrates; P = 0.33). Gas chromatographic analysis of the egg volatiles consistently showed two peaks emanating from fresh eggs, but significantly lower amounts from 12-h-old eggs ( P <0.05). A novel system for collecting the volatiles from this and other blackfly species, as they laid eggs on a substrate in flowing water, is described. Volatiles collected using this method showed identical gas chromatographic profiles to those of fresh eggs alone, indicating that the flies themselves produced no other volatile chemical signals during oviposition. Evidently communal oviposition by S. damnosum s.l . was mediated by a pheromone emanating from fresh eggs. The role of pheromone-mediated egg aggregation in blackfly ecology is discussed, and its possible manipulation is considered.  相似文献

The changes in flax straw structure when treated with sulphur dioxide (SO2) and consequent effect on dew-retting of the treated straw were investigated. The active oxoanions released by sulfurous acid degraded phenolics bound to the polysaccharides and lipids leading to an increase in water-soluble carbohydrates and polyphenols. As a result, proportions of hemicellulose, nitrogen, sulphur, ash and caustic weight loss were higher in treated straw while lipid was reduced. The coarseness of treated fibre was possibly caused by in situ dryback of the hydrolysed polysaccharides. The deposition of salts containing high concentrations of sulphur, calcium and potassium in the vicinity of the fibre bundles and epidermal layer was observed and investigated. In a dew-retting trial comprising SO2-treated and untreated samples, the SO2 treatment delayed microbial colonisation and, consequently, retting by nearly 2 wk compared to the controls. The changes in pH, fungal population and polysaccharide degrading enzymes were monitored. The differences in fibre yield, fineness and strength are presented.  相似文献

Onchocerciasis is endemic on the island of Bioko, Equatorial Guinea, where it is transmitted by the 'Bioko form' of the Simulium damnosum complex, a cytospecies unique to the island. To determine the distribution of vector breeding, three dry season and two wet season expeditions were made in 1989, 1996 and 1997, and 226 of the island's 247 rivers (91.5%) were visited. Of these 226 rivers, 130 (58%) were flowing during the dry season, forty-five (20%) supported aquatic stages of Simuliidae of any species and twenty-five (11%) contained larvae or pupae of the S. damnosum complex. The twenty-one rivers not prospected were in the mountainous south of the island, where an additional seventeen rivers were reached but not satisfactorily prospected. Of these thirty-eight rivers, twenty-nine were considered highly likely to support vector breeding, bringing the total number of rivers which could harbour the vector during the dry season to fifty-four (21.9% of the island's total). Breeding was believed to be limited to river stretches below 1000 m altitude, and during the dry season the total length of those stretches which could support breeding on Bioko was estimated to be 1020 km. A combination of factors, including low river discharges during the dry season, the relatively low water temperature on Bioko, the suitability of limited stretches of most rivers as vector breeding sites and the close proximity of many rivers within a small geographical area, render the vector vulnerable to eradication by aerial treatment of rivers with insecticide. The isolation of the Bioko form of the S. damnosum complex suggests that reinvasion following treatment would be unlikely, and eradication of the vector might be achieved by a dry season larviciding programme in one or two years.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Treatment of Euglena gracilis strain Z with N-methyl-N-nitroso-p-toluenesulfonamide (MNTS) produced a mutant (designated MNTS-40A) showing 2.5-fold greater resistance to the killing effects of MNTS and 40-fold greater resistance to “bleaching” by MNTS. The mutant destroyed MNTS 2–3 times faster than strain Z. As a consequence the nucleic acids of strain 40A became methylated to a smaller extent than those of Z. Strain MNTS-40A was net cross-resistant to either N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine or ultraviolet light.  相似文献

Flightlessness has evolved independently in at least 11 extant avian families. A number of hypotheses have been proposed to explain these transitions in individual families, including release from predation on oceanic islands, energetic costs of flight and use of forelimbs for activities other than flying. Few studies have sought to explore factors common to all families containing flightless species, which may explain the taxonomic distribution of flightlessness. In this study, we found that for all eight avian families which contain both flightless and flighted species, the flighted species have shorter wing lengths relative to body mass than their sister families. This result is not biased by taxon size. Models of avian aerodynamics predict that birds with relatively short wings pay a high energetic cost of flight. We suggest that these increased energetic costs of flying predispose these avian families to evolve flightless species. The various causes for the shortening of wings among flighted species of birds and the possibility of future transitions to flightlessness are discussed.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Paramecium multimicronucleatum was grown in a buffered desiccated lettuce medium maintained at pH 7.5, with Aerobacter aerogenes the main bacterial source. The maximum expansion in length and width was at pH 6.0; the minimum expansion in length and width at pH 8.5. The paramecia were usually stouter at pH levels < 7.0 except at pH 5.5 and generally more slender > pH 7.0.
The pH of the medium affected the size of food vacuoles as indicated by the fact that the maximum food vacuolar diameter was at pH 6.0, the minimum at 7.0.
The fastest and greatest expansion of food vacuole diam. was at a relative viscosity of 8; the minimum food vacuolar diam. was in controls (without gum arabic) having a viscosity of 1.3.  相似文献
