Summary Pteromalus puparum is a gregarious parasitoid of many butterfly pupae. Adult size, mortality, and sex ratio of P. puparum, as a parasitoid of Papilio xuthus, were unit weight of the host. Effects of female size on fecundity, wing load, and longevity were also examined.The highest total weight of progeny from the host was attained when the number of eggs per gram of the host was approximately 150. Positive correlations were observed between the size of the females and their fecundity and wing load. The maximum longevity of the female kept with honey but without hosts was attained when the initial number of parasitoids per g of the host was 150.Considering the total fecundity of all female progeny, the reproductively most efficient number of eggs to be deposited per g of the host was estimated to be approximately 300. However, as shortage of food for the adult females strongly affects their fecundity, the reproductively most efficient number of eggs to be deposited per g of the host was about 70 when the adult female progeny was not provided with food.The optimal number of eggs to be deposited when the emale oviposits in the host under field conditions is discussed.  相似文献

A case of chromomycosis in which hyperthermia proved effective is reported. The patient was a 56-year-old male bean curd maker who, without any previous history of minor trauma, developed on the extensor side of the left upper arm an eczematous lesion that underwent gradual radial expansion. The lesion showed a well-defined, 7×10 cm infiltrated erythematous plaque with the central area healed and, at the upper and lower borders, adherent scales and crusts on the surface. Histological examination revealed granulomatous changes in the dermis, as well as sclerotic cells within giant cells and microabscesses. On culturing,Fonsecaea pedrosoi was isolated. The patient was treated with disposable chemical pocket warmers, which were secured over the lesion with a rather tight elastic bandage, so that they kept the affected area warm for 24 hours a day. After a month of such hyperthermic treatment, the erythema and infiltration had decreased considerably, and microscopic examination and culture of the crusts both yielded negative results. Examination of biopsy specimens of the lesion after the third month showed that it had cicatrized. The treatment was stopped after 4 months, and no relapse occurred. We also summarize the published results of local hyperthermic treatment of chromomycosis in Japan.  相似文献

Congenital amusia is a neurogenetic disorder of music processing that is currently ascribed to a deficit in pitch processing. A recent study challenges this view and claims the disorder might arise as a consequence of a general spatial-processing deficit. Here, we assessed spatial processing abilities in two independent samples of individuals with congenital amusia by using line bisection tasks (Experiment 1) and a mental rotation task (Experiment 2). Both amusics and controls showed the classical spatial effects on bisection performance and on mental rotation performance, and amusics and controls did not differ from each other. These results indicate that the neurocognitive impairment of congenital amusia does not affect the processing of space.  相似文献

-Glucans (average mol wt, 1.3 ? 104) extracted with perchloricacid from 8-day-old suspension-cultured nonglutinous (var. Sasanishiki)and glutinous rice (var. Miyakogane) cells were compared. Theresults of hydrolysis by alpha;-, ß- and iso-amylasesand methylation analysis of the -glucans suggested that theirbasic structures are almost the same. To isolate and identify the plasma factor which stimulates prostaglandin I 2 production by rat aortic ring, a human plasma fraction which showed a major stimulating activity on prostaglandin I 2 production was purified by ultrafiltrate, Sephadex G-10 gel filtration and QAE-Sephadex column chromatography. The purified plasma factor was identified as acid by its ultraviolet and infrared absorption spectroscopy, and 1H nmr and 13C nmr spectroscopy. The stimulating activity of the purified plasma factor and that of authentic uric acid coincided with each other. The stimulating potency of uric acid at its physiological concentration in human plasma (about 50 μg/ml) was half of the deproteinized human plasma, and was about 30 fold stronger than that of L-tryptophan, a cofactor of prostaglandin hyperoxidase.  相似文献

Ehrlich ascites cells were cultured with 1-O-[3H]alkylglycero-3-phosphoethanolamine (1-[3H]alkyl-GPE) or 1-O-[3H]alkylglycero-3-phosphocholine (1-[3H]alkyl-GPC) to reveal the selective retention of polyunsaturated fatty acids at second position of ether-containing phospholipids. Although small percentages of the lysophospholipids were degraded into long-chain alcohol, both alkyllyso-GPE and -GPC were acylated at the rate of approximately 2 nmol/30 min per 10(7) cells. Alkylacylacetylglycerols were prepared from the acylated products by phospholipase C treatment, acetylation and TLC, and fractionated according to the degree of unsaturation by AgNO3-TLC. The distribution of the radioactivity among the subfractions indicated that both alkyllysophospholipids were mainly esterified by docosahexaenoic acid and to a somewhat lesser extent by arachidonic acid. The selectivity for docosahexaenoic acid in the esterification of 1-alkyl-GPE was much stronger than in that of 1-alkyl-GPC. Although acyl-CoA: 1-alkyl-glycerophosphoethanolamine acyltransferase activity of Ehrlich cell microsomes with arachidonoyl-CoA and docosahexaenoyl-CoA as acyl donors was negligible compared with the acyl-CoA:1-alkyl-glycerophosphocholine acyltransferase activity, a significant amount of 1-alkyl-GPE was acylated in the microsomes without exogenously added acyl-CoA. HPLC analysis revealed that docosahexaenoic acid and arachidonic acid were mainly esterified by the microsomal transferase. Acylation of 1-alkyl-GPC with docosahexaenoic acid and arachidonic acid was also observed in the absence of added acyl-CoA, but the activity was lower than that for 1-alkyl-GPE. Although the source of the acyl donor in the acylation has not been determined, the acylation is probably due to the direct transfer of acyl groups between intact phospholipids. The above results provided the first evidence that the lysophospholipid acyltransferase system including the transacylase activity participates in the selective retention of docosahexaenoic acid in intact cells and a cell free system.  相似文献

Summary Non-histone chromatin proteins prepared from the livers of estrogen-treated and nontreated male chickens were compared by reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC), followed by sodium dodecylsulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). The results revealed that the hormone-treated male liver chromatin contained a specific protein corresponding to the vitellogenin-specific protein previously purified from the liver of egg-laying hens (Nakayama 1985). The chicken protein, purified further by gel-filtration high performance liquid chromatography (GF-HPLC), showed specific binding activity to DNA fragments carrying a part of the vitellogenin gene. On the basis of similarities in the elution patterns from GF-HPLC and RP-HPLC as well as in the mobility on SDS-PAGE, we concluded that this hormone-induced protein in the male chicken liver was identical to the vitellogenin-specific protein identified in the hen liver, and assumed it to be a specific regulatory protein for the vitellogenin gene expression. The amino acid composition of this chicken protein has been determined.  相似文献

The toxic effect of aluminum (Al) on the growth of Carrot cells(SO-l) decreased to a greater degree with addition of a mediumconditioned by Al-tolerant carrot cells (TA-l) than with a mediumconditioned by SO-l cells. The toxic effect of Al was reducedgreatly by adding an acidic fraction of the conditioned media,but little or not at all by a neutral or basic fraction. Offour organic acids detected in the acidic fraction, the majorone was citric acid which was present in a much greater amountin the conditioned medium of TA-l cells than in that of SO-lcells. The toxic effect of Al was reduced by adding citric or malicacid instead of the conditioned medium, but not by succinicor fumaric acid. Chelating abilities of the organic acids wereevaluated by shifts in their titration curves, and were foundto be closely correlated with the detoxification effects. Thus,the Al tolerance of TA-l cells may in fact be due to the chelatingeffect of citric acid which is abundantly released into themedium by the Al-tolerant carrot cells. Summary A mast-cell activator, compound 48/80, causes proliferation of mesenchymal cells in the mesentery of rats. Its effect on W/W vmice deficient in mast cells was tested to determine whether the proliferation is mediated in the degranulation of mast cells. Incorporation of [3H]thymidine into mesenchymal cells in the mesentery of these mice with or without compound 48/80 was very small compared to their normal litter mates. However, bone marrow transplantation markedly enhanced the effect of compound 48/80, and resulted in an incorporation of [3H]thymidine almost comparable to that observed in normal mice.
