Conclusion Anthropology has always been concerned with shocking the reader and with deconstructing the reader's view of the world by confrontation with that which is seemingly most alien. Nor is the call for self-reflexive research and writing new. Stanley Diamond's work offers one of the most eloquent visions of a self-reflexive anthropology as cultural critique.26 In view of the overwhelming fascination in anthropology with post-modernism, it is useful to remind oneself that not only are the questions raised by post-modernists of long standing, but also that such questions can become an end in themselves, a way to avoid taking positions and to avoid responsibility.Fiction and ethnography should not be confused, nor should one be a substitute for the other. Ethnography has to travel on a fine line between positivist claims of representing some form of objective truth, an impressionistic pseudo-fiction or an ever more inward-turning contemplation of its own contradictions. To do ethnographic work is to accept the obligation to keep trying to elucidate while resisting the attraction of final, definitive interpretations and continually questioning the media of both research and writing that are being employed. 相似文献

Emerging diseases caused by both native and exotic pathogens represent a main threat to forest ecosystems worldwide. The two invasive soilborne pathogens Phytophthora cinnamomi and Phytophthora × cambivora are the causal agents of ink disease, which has been threatening Castanea sativa in Europe for several centuries and seems to be re-emerging in recent years. Here, we investigated the distribution, causal agents, and infection dynamics of ink disease in southern Switzerland. A total of 25 outbreaks were identified, 19 with only P. cinnamomi, 5 with only P. × cambivora, and 1 with both species. Dendrochronological analyses showed that the disease emerged in the last 20–30 years. Infected trees either died rapidly within 5–15 years post-infection or showed a prolonged state of general decline until death. Based on a generalized linear model, the local risk of occurrence of ink disease was increased by an S-SE aspect of the chestnut stand, the presence of a pure chestnut stand, management activities, the proximity of roads and buildings, and increasing annual mean temperature and precipitation. The genetic structure of the local P. cinnamomi population suggests independent introductions and local spread of the pathogen. 相似文献

This study assesses the effects of external and internalloading on the nutrient concentrations in an agriculturallyloaded shallow lake. Using 13 years of observations of thelake's input and outflow, we calculated the long-term balancesof Tot-P and Tot-N. A more detailed balance, which includeddissolved nutrients and suspended solids, was estimated for anice-free period of one year. The contribution of the externalload was assessed using a mass-balance model. The internalload was estimated from the nutrient balances and on the basisof sedimentation measurements and bioassays. The drainagebasin of the lake provided most of the external nutrientinput; the remaining load was derived from atmosphericdeposition to the lake. The proportions of river-transported Pand N in dissolved form were 25% and 77%, respectively. Thelake retained >80% of the external load. Particulatenutrients settled to the bottom and were probably resuspendedseveral times before permanent sedimentation. Dissolvednutrients were bound by primary producers and a highproportion of dissolved P was removed with the fish catch.Dissolved N was also lost via denitrification. Themass-balance model showed that external loading only partlyregulated the mean annual nutrient concentrations in the lake. The regulation was probably due to internal loading, which washigh despite the efficient net retention of nutrients. Duringthe ice-free period, the temporal variations in nutrientconcentrations were controlled almost solely by internalprocesses, such as resuspension of inorganic and organicbottom matter. Although the internal load of bioavailable Pmay, under favourable conditions, exceed the external load, the mechanism by which bioavailable P is translocated from thebottom sediments to the water could not be fully identified.Abbreviations used in this paper follow the editor'srules. 相似文献

Aim
We use lake phytoplankton community data to quantify the spatio-temporal and scale-dependent impacts of eutrophication, land-use and climate change on species niches and community assembly processes while accounting for species traits and phylogenetic constraints.Location

We use hierarchical modelling of species communities (HMSC) to model metacommunity trajectories at 853 lakes over four decades of environmental change, including a hierarchical spatial structure to account for scale-dependent processes. Using a “region of common profile” approach, we evaluate compositional changes of species communities and trait profiles and investigate their temporal development. Results
We demonstrate the emergence of novel and widespread community composition clusters in previously more compositionally homogeneous communities, with cluster-specific community trait profiles, indicating functional differences. A strong phylogenetic signal of species responses to the environment implies similar responses among closely related taxa. Community cluster-specific species prevalence indicates lower taxonomic dispersion within the current dominant clusters compared with the historically dominant cluster and an overall higher prevalence of smaller species sizes within communities. Our findings denote profound spatio-temporal structuring of species co-occurrence patterns and highlight functional differences of lake phytoplankton communities.Main conclusions
Diverging community trajectories have led to a nationwide reshuffling of lake phytoplankton communities. At regional and national scales, lakes are not single entities but metacommunity hubs in an interconnected waterscape. The assembly mechanisms of phytoplankton communities are strongly structured by spatio-temporal dynamics, which have led to novel community types, but only a minor part of this reshuffling could be linked to temporal environmental change. 相似文献8.
