Biological odours of conspecifics are known to have strong influences on behavioural interaction in bank voles Clethrionomys glareolus. This experiment tested two hypotheses. (1) Olfactory cues from familiar and unfamiliar mature opposite-sex conspecifics differ in their attractiveness to males and females, and their behavioural reactions change with age. (2) A genetically based mechanism is involved in female recognition of kin.In a two-choice preference test, prepubertal males and females were more attracted to familiar than to unfamiliar odours of opposite-sex conspecifics, as manifested by more time spent sniffing familiar voles. As the young reached sexual maturity they shifted their odour preferences. Mature males and females preferred the novel odour of unrelated opposite-sex conspecifics to that of relatives. The results of experiments testing the second hypothesis indicate that females use a genetically based mechanism to recognise their kin. Young and mature females were able to recognise the odour of their biological but socially unknown fathers, and showed the same pattern of behaviour as females in previous experiments.The possible biological functions of kin recognition in bank voles are discussed. 相似文献

We have previously shown that VegT mRNA plays a structural (translation-independent) role in the organization of the cytokeratin
cytoskeleton in Xenopus oocytes. The depletion of VegT mRNA causes the fragmentation of the cytokeratin network in the vegetal cortex of Xenopus oocytes. This effect can be rescued by the injection of synthetic VegT RNA into the oocyte. Here, we show that the structural

Cell adhesion molecules participate in the formation, maturation, function and plasticity of synaptic connections. The growing body of evidence indicates that in the regulation of the synaptic plasticity, in which these molecules play pivotal role, also the proteolytic processes are involved. The iron-sulfur cluster-free hydrogenase (Hmd) from methanogenic archaea harbors an iron-containing cofactor of yet unknown structure. X-ray absorption spectroscopy of the active, as isolated enzyme from Methanothermobacter marburgensis (mHmd) and of the active, reconstituted enzyme from Methanocaldococcus jannaschii (jHmd) revealed the presence of mononuclear iron with two CO, one sulfur and one or two N/O in coordination distance. In jHmd, the single sulfur ligand is most probably provided by Cys176, as deduced from a comparison of the activity and of the x-ray absorption and M?ssbauer spectra of the enzyme mutated in any of the three conserved cysteines. In the isolated Hmd cofactor, two CO, one sulfur, and two nitrogen/oxygen atoms coordinate the iron, the sulfur ligand being most probably provided by mercaptoethanol, which is absolutely required for the extraction of the iron-containing cofactor from the holoenzyme and for the stabilization of the extracted cofactor. In active mHmd holoenzyme, the number of iron ligands increased by one when one of the Hmd inhibitors (CO or KCN) were present, indicating that in active Hmd, the iron contains an open coordination site, which is proposed to be the site of H2 interaction. 相似文献

The force enhancement of a twitch after a maximal conditioning muscle contraction [i.e., postactivation potentiation (PAP)] is reduced with aging, but its influence on the summation of force in response to repetitive stimulation at different frequencies is not known. The purpose of this work was to compare the electrically evoked mechanical responses of the tibialis anterior muscle between young and elderly adults after a 6-s maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). The results showed that, immediately after the conditioning MVC, twitch torque and its maximal rate of development and relaxation were significantly enhanced in both groups, but the magnitude of potentiation was greater in young (148.0 +/- 14.2, 123.7 +/- 16.5, and 185.4 +/- 36.5%, respectively) compared with elderly adults (87.4 +/- 15.2, 63.8 +/- 9.9, and 62.9 +/- 11.0%, respectively). This age-related difference in potentiation of the twitch disappeared completely 1 min after the conditioning MVC. The potentiation of torque and speed-related parameters in response to two- and three-pulse trains, delivered at a constant interval of 10 ms (100 Hz), was less than for a single pulse for both groups. In young adults, the magnitude of PAP on the successive individual mechanical contributions within a train of stimuli declined progressively such that the third contribution did not differ significantly from the same contribution before the conditioning MVC. In contrast, the second and third contributions did not potentiate (P > 0.05) in elderly adults. Although these contributions did potentiate significantly at a lower frequency of stimulation (20 Hz) in the two groups, the difference in PAP between young and elderly adults still persisted. This overall attenuation of potentiation with aging, however, appears to have a moderate influence on the decrement of the muscular performance. 相似文献

We have previously determined that integrin α11β1 is required on mouse periodontal ligament (PDL) fibroblasts to generate the force needed for incisor eruption. As part of the phenotype of α11?/? mice, the incisor PDL (iPDL) is thickened, due to disturbed matrix remodeling. To determine the molecular mechanism behind the disturbed matrix dynamics in the PDL we crossed α11?/? mice with the Immortomouse and isolated immortalized iPDL cells. Microarray analysis of iPDL cells cultured inside a 3D collagen gel demonstrated downregulated expression of a number of genes in α11‐deficient iPDL cells, including matrix metalloproteinase‐13 (MMP‐13) and cathepsin K. α11?/? iPDL cells in vitro displayed disturbed interactions with collagen I during contraction of attached and floating collagen lattices and furthermore displayed reduced MMP‐13 protein expression levels. The MMP‐13 specific inhibitor WAY 170523 and the Cathepsin K Inhibitor II both blocked part of the α11 integrin‐mediated collagen remodeling. In summary, our data demonstrate that in iPDL fibroblasts the mechanical strain generated by α11β1 integrin regulates molecules involved in collagen matrix dynamics. The positive regulation of α11β1‐dependent matrix remodeling, involving MMP‐13 and cathepsin K, might also occur in other types of fibroblasts and be an important regulatory mechanism for coordinated extracellular and intracellular collagen turnover in tissue homeostasis.
