Abstract

Background: Unilateral spatial neglect (USN) is the prevalent feature in patients with right-sided stroke. It is diagnosed through the behavior inattention test (BIT) and has a negative impact on patients affecting both their functional capacity and quality of life.

Objective: Here, we aimed to evaluate the impact of USN on the quality of life of patients in the chronic phase of stroke.

Methods: This is a cross-sectional study with stroke patients with USN. After confirming the presence of stroke through neuroimaging examinations and of USN through the BIT, patients’ quality of life was evaluated by using the EUROQOL scale. Spearman’s correlation was used to validate the correlation between patients’ USN and quality of life, with a p?<?.05 representing significant results.

Results: Eighteen individuals were included. When correlating the value of each domain of the EUROQOL scale with the results of the BIT, we observed a negative correlation between mobility (r?=?–0.97; p?=?.000), self-care (r?=?–0.82; p?=?.013), usual activities (r?=?–0.87; p?=?.005); pain or discomfort (r?=?–0.88; p?=?.004), anxiety or depression (r?=?–0.97; p?=?.000), and EUROQOL total score (r?=?–0.97, p?=?.000).

Conclusion: After a correlation between the overall EUROQOL and BIT scores, we suggest that the higher the USN degree is in stroke patients, the worse their perceived quality of life tends to be.  相似文献

Studies measuring the damage in degraded environments have increased, and it is necessary to obtain reliable biological and ecological indicators for the recovery of such degraded environments and subsequent preservation. This study aimed to conduct a survey of local insects and evaluate their utility in monitoring forest restoration in a degraded area in the Atlantic Forest biome in Ribeirao Grande, State of São Paulo, Brazil. Collections with Shuey traps were conducted from 2006 to 2011 in four distinct forest fragments characterized by environmental impacts, human actions, and phytophysiognomic profiles: Forest (FO), a preserved area with native plant species; “Capoeira” (CA), an area in the natural regeneration process; Planting (PL), an area reforested with native plants; and Pasture (PA), an area with only shrubs. A total of 2,456 specimens of Calliphoridae (Diptera) were collected. Mesembrinella bellardiana was the most abundant (n = 1,884) and dominant species in all environments sampled. The relative abundance of M. bellardiana in the most preserved environment (60.2 % FO, 24.4 % CA, 8.6 % PL, and 6.7 % PA) and other ecological parameters showed that it could be a bioindicator species, i.e., data on its presence or absence directly reflected the status of local preservation. Information on Neotropical dipterans associated with the forested environment is very scarce in the literature. To our knowledge, this is the first study describing the occurrence of Calliphora lopesi (Calliphoridae) in the State of São Paulo.  相似文献

The growing development of biological products highlights the social and environmental responsibility that several industrial companies are facing in recent years. In this context, the advancement of bioprocessing as an alternative for exploring the potential of ecologically based products, especially in biofuels, food, and agro-industrial business, exposes the rational efficiency of the application of renewable sources in different industrial segments. Industries strongly associated with food production concentrate large amounts of wastes rich in bioactive compounds. A range of highly effective technologies has been highly explored to recover large concentrations of prominent compounds present in these materials. The advances in this scenario assurance value addition to these by-products, in addition to highlighting their various technological applications, considering the biorefinery and ecologically based production concepts. Accordingly, this review article described a detailed and systematic approach to the importance of using bioactive compounds and exploring the main sources of these elements. Also, some recent and innovative research that has achieved encouraging results was highlighted. Furthermore, the study included the main extraction technologies that have been investigated as a strategy of prospecting the application of bioactive compounds and optimizing the processes for obtaining natural compounds from plant sources. Finally, future outlooks were presented to contribute to the innovative opportunities and applicability of highly promising technologies and manipulations of bioactive compounds from a range of perspectives.  相似文献

Hen egg white lysozyme (HEL), an antibacterial enzyme, is a prototype protein for studying the physical and chemical events that underlie the formation of amyloid fibril aggregates. Here, we studied alterations in enzymatic activity and aggregation provoked by oxidation of HEL by hypochlorous acid (HOCl), hypobromous acid (HOBr), taurine chloramine (Tau-NHCl), taurine monobromamine (Tau-NHBr), and taurine dibromamine (Tau-NBr(2)). Addition of only 4-fold molar excess of Tau-NHBr or Tau-NBr(2) to HEL caused complete depletion of its intrinsic fluorescence, whereas HOCl and HOBr caused 40%-50% bleaching. Tau-NHCl was unable to oxidize lysozyme. The selective effect of bromamines on tryptophan residues had a direct effect on enzymatic activity; bromamines were about two-fold more effective as inhibitors of lysozyme than the acid precursors. The oxidation of HEL by HOCl and HOBr was more effective regarding the aggregation of the protein, which was evidenced by increased turbidity, Rayleigh scattering, and anisotropy. The aggregates presented spectroscopic properties that suggested the formation of amyloid fibrils, as measured by the thioflavin assay. In conclusion, the capacity of Tau-NHBr and Tau-NBr(2) as inhibitors of the bactericidal activity of HEL could represent a role in the exacerbation of pulmonary infection, since leukocytes are rich sources of both taurine and HOBr. Moreover, the oxidation of HEL by just a small excess of hypohalous acids, a condition that could be found in inflammatory sites, may represent a new pathway for initiation of aggregation.  相似文献

Endophytic filamentous fungi from coffee plants (Coffea arabica and C. robusta) deposited in the Brazilian Collection of Environmental and Industrial Microorganisms (CBMAI) were characterized taxonomically by using molecular tools and investigated concerning their antimicrobial activity against different human pathogenic bacteria. Thirty-seven out of 39 CBMAI strains investigated were identified to at least at genus level by ITS and rDNA D1/D2 sequencing and phylogenetic analyses. Bioactivity screening of fungal extracts against Salmonella choleraesuis (CBMAI 484), Staphylococcus aureus (CBMAI 485), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (CBMAI 489) and against four different Escherichia coli serotypes showed that 17 fungi inhibited at least one of the bacteria studied. The endophytic fungi Trichoderma harzianum (CBMAI 43), Guignardia sp. (CBMAI 69) and Phomopsis sp. (CBMAI 164) inhibited from four to five bacterial species, while five fungi were active against all pathogenic bacteria tested and were identified as Aspergillus versicolor (CBMAI 46), Fusarium oxysporum (CBMAI 53), Glomerella sp. (CBMAI 63) and Cladosporium spp. (CBMAI 64 and CBMAI 66). The Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) for the fungus extracts varied from 0.025 to 1.0 mg ml−1, demonstrating antimicrobial potential of some of these fungi.  相似文献

Dimethylacetamide has been included in different extenders for the cryopreservation of semen from species with promising results. The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of dimethylacetamide (DMA) in different concentrations, associated or not with glycerol (GLY), for the cryopreservation of ovine semen, and its effects on in vitro sperm parameters and post-thaw in vivo fertility. Five semen samples of five adult Santa Ines sheep (n=25) were used. The collected ejaculates were divided among the seven treatments for subsequent cryopreservation. The treatments presented different concentrations of DMA and GLY, being divided as G1: GLY 6%; G2: DMA 3%; G3: GLY 5% + DMA 1%; G4: GLY 4% + DMA 2%; G5: GLY 3% + DMA 3%; G6: GLY 2% + DMA 4%; G7: GLY 1% + DMA 5%. %. Post-thawing of the straws, aliquots were evaluated for computerized sperm kinetics (CASA) and plasma membrane integrity, using fluorescent probes and flow cytometry. After the in vitro evaluation of the sperm parameters, in vivo testing was performed by laparoscopic artificial insemination of 72 females. The post-thaw total motility (%) evaluated by CASA were 51.4, 51.4, 50.1, 53.6, 52.3, 52.8 and 46.9, respectively, for the seven groups. And the plasma membrane integrity (%) were 19.7, 28.4, 22.3, 29.4, 24.3, 17.9 and 16.9, respectively. There were no differences (P> 0.05) between the treatments for the parameters of spermatic kinetics and membrane integrity. For females inseminated with semen from the control group (G1, GLY6%), the percentage of pregnant females was 36.1%, a result similar to that obtained with G3 treatment (GLY5% + DMA1%). In conclusion, dimethylacetamide, either alone or in combination with glycerol, can be used for cryopreservation of ovine semen.  相似文献

The emission of ultraweak light from cells is a phenomenon associated with the oxidation of biomolecules by reactive oxygen species. The indole moiety present in tryptophan, serotonin and melatonin is frequently associated with the emission of light during the oxidation of these metabolites. This study presents results for hypobromous acid (HOBr) oxidation of tryptophan as a putative endogenous source of ultraweak light emission. We found that chemiluminescence elicited by the oxidation of tryptophan by HOBr was significantly higher than by hypochlorous acid (HOCl). This difference was related to secondary oxidation reactions, which were more intense using HOBr. The products identified during oxidation by HOCl, but depleted by using HOBr, were N‐formylkynurenine, kynurenine, 1,2,3,3a,8,8a‐hexahydro‐3a‐hydroxypyrrolo[2,3‐b]‐indole‐2‐carboxylic acid, oxindolylalanine and dioxindolylalanine. The emission of light is dependent on the free α‐amino group of tryptophan, and hence, the indole of serotonin and melatonin, although efficiently oxidized, did not produce chemiluminescence. The emission of light was even greater using taurine monobromamine and dibromamine as the oxidant compared to HOBr. A mechanism based on bromine radical intermediates is suggested for the higher efficiency in light emission. Altogether, the experimental evidence described in the present study indicates that the oxidation of free tryptophan or tryptophan residues in proteins is an important source of ultraweak cellular emission of light. This light emission is increased in the presence of taurine, an amino acid present in large amounts in leukocytes, where this putative source of ultraweak light emission is even more relevant. Introduction

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a complex endocrine disorder, of multifactorial etiology, which affects 6–10% of women of reproductive age. It is considered the leading cause of anovulatory infertility, menstrual disorders and hyperandrogenism in this population. The genetic basis of PCOS is still largely unknown despite significant family clustering; determining its mode of inheritance is particularly difficult given the heterogenic presentation of the disease.

Materials and methods

130 Brazilian women, aged 14–42 years, who met the 2003 Rotterdam criteria for PCOS diagnosis, were included, and 96 healthy women constituted the control group. Presence of hirsutism was classified using the modified Ferriman–Gallwey score (F–G score) as absent (≤ 7), mild (8–14), and severe (≥ 15). Blood levels of luteinizing hormone (LH), total testosterone (TT), dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S) and androstenedione were determined. The coding region of the luteinizing hormone beta-subunit (LHB) gene was amplified and sequenced. Differences in allelic and genotypic frequency distribution of each polymorphism across controls and cases were estimated by the Mantel–Haenszel chi-square or Fisher's exact test (p < 0.05), and the probability of an association between the detection of a polymorphism and presence of a diagnosis of PCOS, by logistic regression.

Result(s)

Sequencing detected 8 polymorphisms in the LHB gene coding region. Two polymorphisms in linkage disequilibrium were significantly more prevalent in the presence of hyperandrogenemia: rs1800447/rs34349826 (Trp28Arg/Ile35Thr) (p = 0.02).

Conclusion(s)

In this series, a modulatory effect of LHB polymorphisms on hyperandrogenemia phenotype of PCOS was observed; however, this finding needs to be replicated in other populations.  相似文献

Pro-oxidant effects of phenolic compounds are usually correlated to the one-electron redox potential of the phenoxyl radicals. Here we demonstrated that, besides their oxidizability, hydrophobicity can also be a decisive factor. We found that esterification of protocatechuic acid (P0) provoked a profound influence in its pro-oxidant capacity. The esters bearing alkyl chains containing two (P2), four (P4) and seven (P7) carbons, but not the acid precursor (P0), were able to exacerbate the oxidation of trolox, α-tocopherol and rifampicin. This effect was also dependent on the catechol moiety, since neither gallic acid nor butyl gallate showed any pro-oxidant effects. A comparison was also made with apocynin, which is well-characterized regarding its pro-oxidant properties. P7 was more efficient than apocynin regarding co-oxidation of trolox. However, P7 was not able to co-oxidize glutathione and NADH, which are targets of the apocynin radical. A correlation was found between pro-oxidant capacity and the stability of the radicals, as suggested by the intensity of the peak current in the differential pulse voltammetry experiments. In conclusion, taking into account that hydroquinone and related moieties are frequently found in biomolecules and quinone-based chemotherapeutics, our demonstration that esters of protocatechuic acid are specific and potent co-catalysts in their oxidations may be very relevant as a pathway to exacerbate redox cycling reactions, which are usually involved in their biological and pharmacological mechanisms of action.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the validity of using the electromyography (EMG) signal as a noninvasive method of estimating the lactate threshold (LT) power output in recreational cyclists. Using an electromagnetic bicycle ergometer and constant pedaling cadence of 80 rpm, 24 recreational cyclists performed an incremental exercise protocol that consisted of stepwise increases in power output of 25 W every 3 min until exhaustion. The EMG signal was recorded from the right vastus lateralis (VL) and right rectus femoris (RF) throughout the test. Blood samples were taken from the fingertip every 3 min. The LT was determined by examining the relation between the lactate concentration and the power output using a log-log transformation model. The root mean square (RMS) value from the EMG signal was calculated for every 1-second non-superimposing window. Sets of pairs of straight regression lines were plotted and the corresponding determination coefficients (R(2)) were calculated. The intersection point of the pair of lines with the highest R(2) product was chosen to represent the EMG threshold (EMGT). The results showed that the correlation coefficients (r) between EMGT and LT were significant (p < 0.01) and high for the VL (r = 0.826) and RF (r = 0.872). The RF and VL muscles showed similar behavior during the maximal incremental test and the EMGT and LT power output were equivalent for both muscles. The validity of using EMG to estimate the LT power output in recreational cyclists was confirmed.  相似文献
