Abstract:  The performance of herbivores, natural enemies and their interactions may be affected directly or indirectly by host plant traits, e.g. the physical plant characteristics may influence the search pattern and the functional response of predators. We studied the functional response of adult females of the predatory mite Neoseiulus cucumeris to first instar larvae of Thrips tabaci on three host plants (sweet pepper, eggplant and cucumber). The 24-h leaf disc experiments conducted at 25 ± 1°C, 60 ± 10% relative humidity and 16 : 8 h (light : dark) showed that N. cucumeris exhibited a type II functional response on all host plants. The following search rates and handling times were estimated from fitting the data to the disc equation 0.043/h and 1.798 h (cucumber); 0.048/h and 1.030 h (sweet pepper) and 0.0441/h and 2.294 h (eggplant) giving an estimated maximum predation of 13.35, 23.31 and 10.46 larvae per day respectively. The data from sweet pepper could also be described by the random predator equation ( a ': 0.051/h; T h: 0.472 h). The host plant species interacted significantly with prey density on the functional response of N. cucumeris with the relative differences in the number of thrips eaten on each host plant increasing with density. It is suggested that it is mainly the difference in trichome density between the three host plants that is responsible for the observed differences in the functional response of N. cucumeris . These results emphasize the importance of the host plant characteristics on the performance of natural enemies and for optimizing their use in biological control of pests.  相似文献

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the central nervous system (CNS). Despite introducing multiple immunomodulatory approaches for MS, there are still major concerns about possible ways for improving remyelination in this disease. Microglia exert essential roles in regulation of myelination processes, and interaction between colony-stimulating factor 1 (CSF1) with its receptor CSF1R is considered as a key regulator of microglial differentiation and survival. The aim of this study was to investigate possible roles for a CSF1R inhibitor PLX3397 in recovery of central myelination processes. Chronic demyelination was induced in mice by addition of 0.2% cuprizone to the chow for 12 weeks. Next, animals were undergoing a diet containing 290 mg/kg PLX3397 to induce microglial ablation. The PLX3397 treatment caused a significant decrease in the rate of expression for the CSF1/CSF1R axis, and a reduction in the protein expressions for the microglial marker Iba-1 and for the oligodendrocyte marker Olig-2. Findings from Luxol fast blue (LFB) staining and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed an increase in the rate of myelination for the mice receiving PLX3397. The rate of destruction in the nerve fibers and the extent of the gaps formed between layers of myelin sheaths was also reduced after the treatment with PLX3397. In addition, animals experienced an improvement in recovery of motor deficit after receiving PLX3397 (for all P < 0.05). It could be concluded that PLX3397 could retain myelination in the MS model possibly through regulation of the myelin environment.  相似文献

In this paper, a plasmonic perfect absorber (PPA) based on metal-insulator-metal-insulator-metal (MIMIM) structure has been designed for refractive index sensing of glucose solutions (analyte) and then a new method has been proposed for fast, low-cost, and easy measurement of sensor’s sensitivity. Simulation results show that the absorption spectrum of the proposed sensor has two resonance peaks that with an increase in analyte refractive index, both of them are red-shifted. In our proposed measurement technique, two conventional single-wavelength lasers (with wavelengths of 1050 nm and 1750 nm) are used for vertical plane wave light illumination on the structure. Then, the absorbed powers at 1750 nm (A2) and 1050 nm (A1) wavelengths are calculated and variation of the absorption ratio (A2/A1) due to change of analyte refractive index would be introduced as the sensitivity of sensor (S = Δ(A2/A1)/Δn). Obtained results show that the increase of analyte refractive index from n = 1.312 to n = 1.384 will result in an increase of sensor’s sensitivity from 9.3/RIU to 33.475/RIU.

The tomato leaf miner Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) is a devastating pest of tomato plants originating from South America. In this study, the effect of three tomato cultivars on the life table parameters of T. absoluta was investigated. Data were analysed based on age‐stage, two‐sex life table theory. The net reproduction rate (R0) of T. absoluta on Falkato, Isabella and Grandella cultivars was determined as 15.73 ± 3.35, 17.66 ± 3.33 and 10.03 ± 4.10 eggs, respectively. The intrinsic rate of increase (r) value on those cultivars was 0.09 ± 0.007, 0.095 ± 0.006 and 0.074 ± 0.017 day?1, respectively. Finite population rates of increase (λ) were 1.095 ± 0.008, 1.099 ± 0.007 and 1.076 ± 0.018 day?1, and mean generation times (T) on the three cultivars were 30.09 ± 0.29, 30.22 ± 0.27 and 31.12 ± 0.65 days, respectively. The egg incubation period, pre‐adult duration and fecundity on these tomato cultivars was also calculated. The results showed no significant differences between r, R0, and T on the three tested tomato cultivars. These findings can be useful for developing an integrated pest management strategy against this noxious pest.  相似文献

Pathogenicity of a native isolate of Steinernema feltiae (H1) and two exotic strains, Heterorhabditis bacteriophora and Steinernema carpocapsae was assessed under laboratory conditions using different concentrations i.e. 4000, 6000, 8000 and 10,000 infective juveniles/ml against second instar larvae, prepupa and pupa of Thrips tabaci Lindeman. The mortality data were recorded 24 and 48?h post-inoculation. The highest mortality rate was recorded for prepupa (62%) than second instar (12.5%) by H. bacteriophora and S. carpocapsae, respectively, 24?h after treatment. No significant differences were found in mortality between prepupa and pupa with increasing the nematodes concentrations (from 4000 to 10,000 nematode/ml) but increasing nematode concentrations increased the mortality of second instar. At the end of the experiment (48?h.), S. feltiae H1 caused the highest mortality on second instar larvae (74%), whereas all other species caused 80–83% mortalities on pupa. This study suggests that native isolate of S. feltiae (H1) had high potential to infect soil-dwelling stages of T. tabaci.  相似文献

Background

Neonates are commonly exposed to maternal codeine through breast milk. Central Nervous System (CNS) depression has been reported in up to 24% of nurslings following codeine exposure. In 2009, we developed guidelines to improve the safety of codeine use during breastfeeding based on previously established pharmacogenetic and clinical risk factors. The primary objective of this study was to prospectively evaluate the effectiveness of these guidelines in ensuring neonatal safety.

Methods and Findings

Women taking codeine for pain following caesarean section were given safety guidelines, including advice to use the lowest codeine dose for no longer than four days and to switch to a non-opioid when possible. Mothers provided a saliva sample for analysis of genes involved in opioid disposition, metabolism and response. A total of 238 consenting women participated. Neonatal sedation was reported in 2.1% (5/238) of breastfeeding women taking codeine according to our safety guidelines. This rate was eight fold lower than that reported in previous prospective studies. Women reporting sedated infants were taking codeine for a significantly longer period of time (4.80±2.59 days vs. 2.52±1.58 days, p = 0.0018). While following the codeine safety guidelines, mothers were less likely to supplement with formula, reported lower rates of sedation in themselves and breastfed more frequently throughout the day when compared to previously reported rates. Genotyping analysis of cytochrome p450 2D6 (CYP2D6), uridine-diphosphate glucuronosyltransferase (UGT) 2B7, p-glycoprotein (ABCB1), the mu-opioid receptor (OPRM1) and catechol-o-demethyltransferase (COMT) did not predict codeine response in breastfeeding mother/infant pairs when following the safety guidelines.

Conclusions

The only cases of CNS depression occurred when the length of codeine use exceeded the guideline recommendations. Neonatal safety of codeine can be improved using evidence-based guidelines, even in those deemed by genetics to be at high risk for toxicity.  相似文献
