Distribution of iron-containing oxidases in aging nodal rootsof rice and wheat was studied. Activities of cytochrome c oxidase(1.9.3.1 [EC] , cytochrome c : O2 oxidoreductase), catalase (1.11.1.6 [EC] ,H2O2: H2O2 oxidoreductase) and peroxidase (1.11.1.7 [EC] , donor:H2O2 oxidoreductase) in wheat roots were comparatively higherthan were those in rice roots at corresponding stages. Cytochromec oxidase in roots remained active throughout the lives of therice and wheat crops. In rice roots, catalase seemed to playa distinct role around the panicle formation stage. Decay ofcatalase activity took place earlier than did that of peroxidaseand cytochrome c oxidase activities. In wheat roots similarenzyme activity changes were not observed. Spatiotemporal variation in mating patterns is poorly known in wind‐pollinated plant species. Here, we analysed mating patterns of the wind‐pollinated dioecious shrub Pistacia lentiscus by genotyping 904 seeds from 30 mother plants with eight microsatellite markers in a high‐density population in two consecutive flowering seasons. We found significant differences in some mating system estimates between years, particularly in the levels of correlated paternity. Overall, within‐mothers correlated paternity was higher in 2007 than in 2006 (rpWM = 0.085 and 0.030), which translated into an effective number of fathers (Nep) of 11.8 and 33.6 respectively. Using a smoothing interpolation technique, we show that the effective pollen cloud was spatially structured in patches of high‐ and low‐genetic diversity, which do not remain constant from year to year. In 2006, the among‐mothers correlated paternity (rpAM) showed no trend with distance, suggesting no restriction of pollen dispersal. However, in 2007, rpAM was greater than zero at short distances, revealing the existence of small‐scale patterns of pollen dispersal. The fact that the studied seasons were climatically homogeneous during the flowering time suggested that the observed differences might be ascribed to between‐year phenological variation of individuals in the studied population or other (unknown) factors. Numerical simulations, based on the real data set, indicated that the clumping of males and decreasing plant density, which is related to different types of pollen limitation, greatly increase correlated mating in this wind‐pollinated species, which is of relevance under the frame of the continuous anthropogenic habitat disturbance suffered by Mediterranean ecosystems.  相似文献

The genetic variation in flowering phenology may be an important component of a species’ capacity to colonize new environments. In native populations of the invasive species Ulex europaeus, flowering phenology has been shown to be bimodal and related to seed predation. The aim of the present study was to determine if this bimodality has a genetic basis, and to investigate whether the polymorphism in flowering phenology is genetically linked to seed predation, pod production and growth patterns. We set up an experiment raising maternal families in a common garden. Based on mixed analyses of variance and correlations among maternal family means, we found genetic differences between the two main flowering types and confirmed that they reduced seed predation in two different ways: escape in time or predator satiation. We suggest that this polymorphism in strategy may facilitate maintain high genetic diversity for flowering phenology and related life‐history traits in native populations of this species, hence providing high evolutionary potential for these traits in invaded areas.  相似文献

This experiment studies the comparative activities of terminaloxidases (Fe-containing oxidases, Cu-containing oxidases andCN-resistant oxidases) in roots of rice and wheat seedlingsand the effect of root pruning on these terminal oxidases inthe roots of those crops. Data indicate that (i) excepting achange in the activity of Cu-containing oxidases no appreciabledifference in respiration or in Fe-containing and CN-resistantoxidases was noticed in the two types of seedling roots and(ii) root pruning did not produce any noticeable change in terminaloxidase activities in roots of wheat seedlings. A drastic changein terminal oxidase activities in roots of rice seedlings wasobserved, suggesting that a close relationship exists betweenCN-resistant oxidase and transplanting time. The impact of the Pleistocene climate oscillations on the structure of biodiversity in tropical regions remains poorly understood. In this study, the forest refuge theory is examined at the molecular level in Milicia excelsa, a dioecious tree with a continuous range throughout tropical Africa. Eight nuclear microsatellites (nSSRs) and two sequences and one microsatellite from chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) showed a deep divide between samples from Benin and those from Lower Guinea. This suggests that these populations were isolated in separate geographical regions, probably for several glacial cycles of the Pleistocene, and that the nuclear gene pools were not homogenized despite M. excelsa’s wind‐pollination syndrome. The divide could also be related to seed dispersal patterns, which should be largely determined by the migration behaviour of M. excelsa’s main seed disperser, the frugivorous bat Eidolon helvum. Within Lower Guinea, a north–south divide, observed with both marker types despite weak genetic structure (nSSRs: FST = 0.035, cpDNA: GST = 0.506), suggested the existence of separate Pleistocene refugia in Cameroon and the Gabon/Congo region. We inferred a pollen‐to‐seed dispersal distance ratio of c. 1.8, consistent with wide‐ranging gene dispersal by both wind and bats. Simulations in an Approximate Bayesian Computation framework suggested low nSSR and cpDNA mutation rates, but imprecise estimates of other demographic parameters, probably due to a substantial gene flow between the Lower Guinean gene pools. The decline of genetic diversity detected in some Gabonese populations could be a consequence of the relatively recent establishment of a closed canopy forest, which could negatively affect M. excelsa’s reproductive system.  相似文献

Hypericum nummularium has a strongly disjunct, bi‐areal distribution in Europe: it is abundant in the Pyrenees and grows in a very restricted part of the Alps, more than 1000 km away. My aim was to estimate the genetic divergence between these areas and to identify the factors responsible for the disjunction: glacial relicts, bidirectional colonization from a common refugium, long‐distance dispersal and/or human introduction? Internal transcribed spacers (ITS) sequencing (680 bp) and amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) fingerprinting (104 polymorphic markers) showed very low differentiation between populations in the Alps and the Pyrenees, indicating that H. nummularium probably survived in a single refugium. Moreover, levels of genetic diversity were similar in the two areas, making human introduction and long‐distance dispersal unlikely. Thus, the species probably survived in one refugium, subsequently colonizing both areas more or less simultaneously. The comparison of genetic and geographical distances suggested a step by step migration in the Alps (isolation by distance), whereas random dispersal events were more likely in the Pyrenees. Finally, I discuss possible causes for the restricted distribution area of H. nummularium in the Alps (e.g. unsuitable habitat, low dispersal capacities) and conclude that strong human disturbance is probably the major limit to the expansion of the species in this region. © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2006, 87 , 437–447.  相似文献

The effects of H-Y antigen, released in a soluble state by male human Burkitt lymphomas and mouse teratomas, were studied in the fetal gonads from 13 to 21-day-old rats and 98-day-old calves, using histologic techniques, radioimmunoassays for testosterone, and bioassays for Müllerian-inhibiting substance (MIS). Whereas no effect was detected in the younger gonads, some structural changes were observed in bovine and 21-day-old rat ovaries when cultured for 5 days with Daudi and male teratoma supernatants, but there was no synthesis of testosterone or MIS. These observations raise questions concerning the critial period of sensitively to H-Y antigen of female gonads, and the dissociation between morphologic and biochemical events.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Reproductive isolation of sympatric populations may result from divergent selection of populations in different environments, and lead to ecological specialisation. In Brittany (France), the gorse Ulex europaeus (Fabaceae, Genisteae), may be encountered in sympatry with one of the two other gorse species present: U. gallii and U. minor . A recent study based on morphological identification of seed predators of gorse has shown that two weevil species (Curculionoidea, Apionidae) infest gorse pods at different seasons and have different host ranges: Exapion ulicis infests U. europaeus in spring, whereas E. lemovicinum infests U. gallii and U. minor in autumn. Weevil populations may thus have diverged in sympatry.
2. As morphological identification of weevils is often difficult and some of the characters used may exhibit individual or environmental variation, mitochondrial and nuclear sequences of weevils collected within pods of the three gorse species in 10 populations of Brittany were used to reconstruct their phylogeny.
3. The results reveal that species differentiation based on morphological characters is confirmed by the two molecular data sets, showing that E. ulicis and E. lemovicinum are distinct species, and suggesting the absence of host races. Finally, E. ulicis was able to use U. gallii and U. minor pods in spring in some years in some populations, which appeared to depend on the availability of pods present during its reproductive period.
4. Divergence between E. ulicis and E. lemovicinum may have resulted from temporal isolation of reproductive periods of weevil populations followed by specialisation of insects to host phenology.  相似文献

Metabolic profiling using phosphorus nuclear magnetic resonance (31P-NMR) revealed that the leaves of different herbs and trees accumulate 2- C -methyl- d -erythritol 2,4-cyclodiphosphate (MEcDP), an intermediate of the methylerythritol 4-phosphate (MEP) pathway, during bright and hot days. In spinach ( Spinacia oleracea L.) leaves, its accumulation closely depended on irradiance and temperature. MEcDP was the only 31P-NMR-detected MEP pathway intermediate. It remained in chloroplasts and was a sink for phosphate. The accumulation of MEcDP suggested that its conversion rate into 4-hydroxy-3-methylbut-2-enyl diphosphate, catalysed by ( E )-4-hydroxy-3-methylbut-2-enyl diphosphate synthase (GcpE), was limiting under oxidative stress. Indeed, O2 and ROS produced by photosynthesis damage this O2-hypersensitive [4Fe-4S]-protein. Nevertheless, as isoprenoid synthesis was not inhibited, damages were supposed to be continuously repaired. On the contrary, in the presence of cadmium that reinforced MEcDP accumulation, the MEP pathway was blocked. In vitro studies showed that Cd2+ does not react directly with fully assembled GcpE, but interferes with its reconstitution from recombinant GcpE apoprotein and prosthetic group. Our results suggest that MEcDP accumulation in leaves may originate from both GcpE sensitivity to oxidative environment and limitations of its repair. We propose a model wherein GcpE turnover represents a bottleneck of the MEP pathway in plant leaves simultaneously exposed to high irradiance and hot temperature.  相似文献

1. The effects of wind events on phytoplankton dynamics were investigated in two temperate reservoirs. 2. Meteorological forcing, change in physical and chemical structure of the water column and biological responses of phytoplankton communities were followed for 3 weeks in three seasons. 3. Depending on the season, the phytoplankton response differed in response to nutrient and light conditions, and to the intensity of stratification and mixing. 4. We demonstrated that, on a time scale of a few days, wind events can modify phytoplankton dynamics, in terms of size structure and exported biomass. An increase of mixing favoured the largest size class and disadvantaged the smallest size class, while an increase in stratification had the opposite effects. The short‐term change in size structure was reflected in the sedimentary fluxes but with a time lag.  相似文献
