1. Stable isotope analysis, coupled with dietary data from the literature, was used to investigate trophic patterns of freshwater fauna in a tropical stream food web (Guadeloupe, French West Indies).
2. Primary producers (biofilm, algae and plant detritus of terrestrial origin) showed distinct δ13C signatures, which allowed for a powerful discrimination of carbon sources. Both autochthonous (13C-enriched signatures) and allochthonous (13C-depleted signatures) resources enter the food web. The migrating behaviour of fishes and shrimps between marine and freshwater during their life cycles can be followed by carbon isotopes. Here, shrimp δ13C signatures were shown to shift from −16‰ (for juveniles under marine influence) to −24.7‰ (for adults in freshwater habitats). For resident species, δ13C values partly reflected the species' habitat preferences along the river continuum : species living in river mouths were 13C-enriched in comparison with those collected upstream.
3. Nitrogen isotopic ratios were also discriminating and defined three main trophic guilds among consumers. The δ15N values of herbivores/detritivores were 5.0–8.4‰, omnivores 8.8–10.2‰ and carnivores 11–12.7‰.
4. Mixing model equations were employed to calculate the possible range of contribution made by respective food sources to the diet of each species. The results revealed the importance of omnivorous species and the dependence of riverine biota on terrestrial subsidies, such as leaf detritus and fruits. Finally, the abundance of shrimps and their feeding habits placed in relief their key role in tropical freshwater food webs. Isotopic analysis provides a useful tool for assessing animal feeding patterns.  相似文献

In the present work we have found that microcalorimetry might be a useful method to record pinocytosis in Amoeba proteus . Sodium-induced (67 mM) and potassium-induced (75 mM) pinocytosis caused an increase in heat output of 130 and 325%, respectively. Heat production during lysozyme-induced (0.43 mg/ml) pinocytosis increased about 100%.  相似文献

Peaches are highly perishable and deteriorate quickly at ambient temperature. Cold storage is commonly used to prevent fruit decay; however, it affects fruit quality causing physiological disorders collectively termed ‘chilling injury’ (CI). To prevent or ameliorate CI, heat treatment is often applied prior to cold storage. In the present work, metabolic profiling was performed to determine the metabolic dynamics associated with the induction of acquired CI tolerance in response to heat shock. ‘Dixiland’ peach fruits exposed to 39 °C, cold stored, or after a combined treatment of heat and cold, were compared with fruits ripening at 20 °C. Dramatic changes in the levels of compatible solutes such as galactinol and raffinose were observed, while amino acid precursors of the phenylpropanoid pathway were also modified due to the stress treatments, as was the polyamine putrescine. The observed responses towards temperature stress in peaches are composed of both common and specific response mechanisms to heat and cold, but also of more general adaptive responses that confer strategic advantages in adverse conditions such as biotic stresses. The identification of such key metabolites, which prime the fruit to cope with different stress situations, will likely greatly accelerate the design and the improvement of plant breeding programs.  相似文献

Anomalocardia brasiliana is a venerid clam which lives slightlyburrowed in sandy mud of shallow water environments throughoutthe Caribbean region. A 42-month study in a mangrove lagoonshows that the population is characterised by a variable recruitmentpattern on a year-round basis but with infrequent success. TheGompertz function gives a good estimation of growth. The weight-sizerelationship shows alternative isometric and subdeterminantallometric growth periods. Encarsia pergandiella Howard, described from North America (USA), and Encarsia tabacivora Viggiani, described from South America (Brazil) (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae), are two formally recognized taxonomic entities, that have been treated by several authors as synonyms due to lack of strong diagnostic characters. Taxonomy of these species is further complicated because several populations, geographically separated and differing in their biology, have been included under the concept of E. pergandiella. Among these, a population originally collected in Brazil and introduced to North America reproduces by thelytokous parthenogenesis and is infected by the symbiont Cardinium, while a morphologically indistinguishable population, naturally occurring in Texas, is biparental and infected by a related strain of Cardinium that induces cytoplasmic incompatibility. A third population known from California and introduced to the Old World is biparental and uninfected by intracellular symbionts. While adult females of the first two populations have entirely light yellow bodies and pupate face up (light form), those of the third population have largely brown bodies and pupate face down (dark form). Other dark form populations are known from Texas, Florida and New York. Because these parasitoids are economically important biological control agents of cosmopolitan whitefly pests, it is critical to characterize them correctly. In this study, we integrated molecular and morphometric analyses to substantiate observed differences in biological traits, and resolve the complicated taxonomy of this species complex. We sequenced the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene and the D2 region of the ribosomal 28S gene for individuals of both light form (from Texas and Brazil) and dark form (from California, Texas, Italy and Canary Islands) originating from laboratory cultures or collected in the field. Phylogenetic analysis unambiguously distinguished three well‐supported groups corresponding to the Texas light form, the Brazil light form and the dark form. Individuals of these three groups, in combination with all available type material (E. pergandiella, its synonym Encarsia versicolor Girault and E. tabacivora) and additional museum specimens of the dark form from New York and Italy, were subjected to multivariate morphometric analyses using Burnaby principal component analysis followed by a linear discriminant analysis, and multivariate ratio analysis. Overall, the analyses showed that: (i) E. pergandiella and E. tabacivora are two distinct species; (ii) the thelytokous Brazil light form corresponds to E. tabacivora; (iii) the biparental Texas light form is a new species formally described here as Encarsia suzannae sp.n. ; (iv) two new biparental species can be referred to the dark form, one described as Encarsia gennaroi sp.n. including the populations sampled in California, Texas, Italy and Canary Islands, and the other corresponding to the population from New York described as Encarsia marthae sp.n. A dichotomous key for both sexes of the species of the E. pergandiella complex is provided for identification. Genetic analysis of crosses between two induced, ineffectivelynodulating mutants of common bean, NOD238 and NOD109, revealedthat their mutated nodulation phenotype is under the controlof the same locus in both mutants. The two mutants also resultedallelic for poor pod fertility, the other trait common to themutants. F1 plants from crosses with their wild types nodulatedeffectively and had wild type pod fertility. Ineffective nodulationand poor pod fertility traits co-segregated in the F2generationin which plants with the mutant nodulation and pod fertilityphenotypes represented 12.5% of the total population. Analysisin F3confirmed that these plants were homozygous for both mutatedcharacters. The results indicated both mutant traits studiedare determined by a single recessive allele, named sym-2, whoseinheritance is negatively affected by its pleiotropic effecton pod fertility determining a deficit of ineffectively nodulatingcombinations. In an allelism test with the non-nodulating mutantof common bean NOD125 it was found that ineffective nodulationis controlled at a different locus and that the two loci arenot linked.
