1. Freshly fallen green leaves and flowers of terrestrial plants enter temperate streams in spring and summer, when senescent leaf litter is often scarce. These resources appear to provide good supplementary food for macroinvertebrate shredders, but have some potential shortcomings as food or case material for caddisflies. 2. To compare suitability of green leaves or flowers and senescent leaves for the growth and development of stream shredders, we reared the caddisfly Lepidostoma complicatum in the laboratory with treatments that provided larvae with senescent (oak) and green (oak or maple) leaves separately, and also together, in case the combined use of both types of leaf may benefit the shredder. 3. Larvae supplied with green leaves alone grew at 65% of the rate of those provided with senescent leaves alone, due to their lower consumption rate. No individuals given green leaves alone developed into adults, whereas 70% of the individuals given senescent leaves alone did. Green leaves may inhibit larval consumption due to their high phenol content, or they may be unsuitable for case material because they are less tough than senescent leaves. 4. Larvae supplied with both senescent and green leaves (or flowers) had a higher growth rate and developed faster, than those given senescent leaves alone, whereas the proportions of successfully emerged individuals did not differ. Lepidostoma probably benefits from the higher nitrogen content of the green leaves when used together with senescent leaves. 5. These results suggest that green leaves (or flowers) cannot serve as an alternative food resource to senescent leaves, but that they can enhance the growth and development of a Lepidostoma stream shredder if senescent leaves are also available.  相似文献

In plant species producing non‐dormant seeds, the germination time (from the start of imbibition to radicle emergence) is the main factor determining the timing of seedling emergence. We investigated maternal and paternal genetic effects on the germination time of non‐dormant seeds of a monocarpic perennial, Aster kantoensis Kitamura (Compositae). Three sets of reciprocal diallel crosses among five plants were conducted to produce genetic variation in seeds, and the germination time of the progeny of each parent was determined. The effects of the maternal parent and the interaction of maternal and paternal parents on the germination time of progeny were significant in all sets, and the effect of the paternal parent was significant in two of the three sets. This result means that the germination time of the progeny of a maternal or paternal parent can vary with the genotype of its mating partners. Because variation in the emergence time of seedlings contributes to avoiding seedling loss owing to unpredictable environmental changes, genetic variation in the germination time among the progeny of each parent mating with multiple partners could contribute to the establishment of the parent's seedlings in species producing non‐dormant seeds in the field.  相似文献

1. Detecting hot spots of litter decomposition will promote understanding of litter processing in a heterogeneous system. To identify hot spots of leaf breakdown within a headwater stream reach, we examined the difference in leaf breakdown rate among four types of litter patches, one that formed in riffles and three that formed in pools (middle, alcove, edge), in different seasons. 2. Middle patches showed the highest breakdown rate in some seasons; the rate in middle patches was 1.5–4 times higher than in the other patches. Thus middle patches can be regarded as hot spots of leaf breakdown in the study reach. This result contrasted with other studies showing higher breakdown rate in riffles than in pools. 3. Significant relationships between abundance of caddisfly shredders and breakdown rate were observed in seasons when the rate differed among patch types. Greater abundance of Lepidostoma seems to be responsible for middle patches being hot spots of leaf breakdown. 4. It is expected that when the proportion of leaves retained in middle patches within a reach is higher, the breakdown rate of the entire reach will be increased. Clarifying how the proportion of leaves retained on middle patches within a reach varies temporally and spatially would improve our understanding of leaf breakdown in headwater streams.  相似文献

We investigated how p38α mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38) is related to kainate-induced epilepsy and neuronal damages, by using the mice with a single copy disruption of the p38 α gene (p38α+/?). Mortality rate and seizure score of p38α+/? mice administered with kainate were significantly reduced compared with the case of wild-type (WT) mice. This was clearly supported by the electroencephalography data in which kainate-induced seizure duration and frequency in the brain of p38α+/? mice were significantly suppressed compared to those of WT mice. As a consequence of seizure, kainate induced delayed neuronal damages in parallel with astrocytic growth in the hippocampus and ectopic innervation of the mossy fibers into the stratum oriens in the CA3 region of hippocampus in WT mice, whose changes were moderate in p38α+/? mice. Likewise, kainate-induced phosphorylation of calcium/calmodulin-dependent kinase II in the hippocampus of p38α +/? mice was significantly decreased compared to that of WT mice. These results suggest that p38α signaling pathway plays an important role in epileptic seizure and excitotoxicity.  相似文献
