The influence of long and short days during the hardening period on the cold hardiness of perennial ryegrass seedlings was studied as was the relative hardiness of roots and shoots. Hardiness was assessed by the electrolyte release method which was a measure of the amount of damage subsequent to low temperature treatment. Long days promoted hardiness in shoots of Pax 0tofte plants and in one case under short days the roots were found to be hardy. Generally roots were less hardy than shoots in Pax 0tofte and S23 plants hardened under long days for 2 wk. When hardened at the fourth leaf stage for 2 wk at + 5 oC under long day conditions, Pax 0tofte plants were more hardy than those of S23. The long day effect on hardiness was arrived at more rapidly, there being no difference in hardiness after 3 wk in Pax 0tofte hardened under long or short days, whereas a significant degree of hardening was observed after 1 wk of hardening under long days at – 4 oC. The results obtained are discussed in relation to winter kill of grasses in the West of Scotland, and it is considered that root damage is not an important factor in causing winter kill. The promotive effect of long days on hardiness when hardening commences in late autumn is considered an advantage in temperate regions as it may also allow early frosts to be withstood.  相似文献

Many serious ecosystem consequences of climate change will take decades or even centuries to emerge. Long‐term ecological responses to global change are strongly regulated by slow processes, such as changes in species composition, carbon dynamics in soil and by long‐lived plants, and accumulation of nutrient capitals. Understanding and predicting these processes require experiments on decadal time scales. But decadal experiments by themselves may not be adequate because many of the slow processes have characteristic time scales much longer than experiments can be maintained. This article promotes a coordinated approach that combines long‐term, large‐scale global change experiments with process studies and modeling. Long‐term global change manipulative experiments, especially in high‐priority ecosystems such as tropical forests and high‐latitude regions, are essential to maximize information gain concerning future states of the earth system. The long‐term experiments should be conducted in tandem with complementary process studies, such as those using model ecosystems, species replacements, laboratory incubations, isotope tracers, and greenhouse facilities. Models are essential to assimilate data from long‐term experiments and process studies together with information from long‐term observations, surveys, and space‐for‐time studies along environmental and biological gradients. Future research programs with coordinated long‐term experiments, process studies, and modeling have the potential to be the most effective strategy to gain the best information on long‐term ecosystem dynamics in response to global change.  相似文献

The use of genomic techniques to address ecological questions is emerging as the field of genomic ecology. Experimentation under environmentally realistic conditions to investigate the molecular response of plants to meaningful changes in growth conditions and ecological interactions is the defining feature of genomic ecology. Because the impact of global change factors on plant performance are mediated by direct effects at the molecular, biochemical, and physiological scales, gene expression analysis promises important advances in understanding factors that have previously been consigned to the 'black box' of unknown mechanism. Various tools and approaches are available for assessing gene expression in model and nonmodel species as part of global change biology studies. Each approach has its own unique advantages and constraints. A first generation of genomic ecology studies in managed ecosystems and mesocosms have provided a testbed for the approach and have begun to reveal how the experimental design and data analysis of gene expression studies can be tailored for use in an ecological context.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Mid-rotation management practices for pine (Pinus spp.) plantations enrolled in cost-share programs have not been widely evaluated for wildlife. Mid-rotation pine plantations often have a substantial hardwood mid-story that limits growth of desirable understory forage species important to white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus; deer). We treated with imazapyr herbicide and prescribed burning (HB) 11 thinned, 13–22-year-old loblolly pine (P. taeda) plantations in the Upper Coastal Plain (UCP; n = 5) and the Lower Coastal Plain (LCP; n = 6) of Mississippi, USA, enrolled in cost-share programs. We then sampled these plantations for production of important deer forages during July of 2003 and 2004, years 1 and 2 posttreatment. Deer foraging habitat was clearly improved by the HB treatment in both regions by year 2. Forb species of annual importance to deer increased in percent cover and biomass in the UCP and in biomass in the LCP. We estimated nutritional carrying capacity using a target diet quality of 14% crude protein; estimates in HB plots were 3 times greater than controls in the UCP and 19 times greater in the LCP. Although UCP sites had baseline carrying capacities nearly 8 times greater than LCP sites, the greater relative response to HB in the LCP eliminated the regional difference. Our results indicate that imazapyr herbicide treatment followed by prescribed fire is a beneficial tool for deer management in mid-rotation pine plantations.  相似文献

In vegetative plants of Lolium multiflorum removal of the two youngest emerging leaves resulted in increased expansion of basal tiller buds. A similar release of inhibition of tiller buds took place if the floriferous apex was removed. The surgical procedures did not affect the response. Under conditions of N-deficiency total tiller number was reduced but on removal of the apex the deficient plants showed an increased initial rate of tiller bud expansion. Apical dominance during the vegetative stage of growth in this grass was apparently due to the expanding leaves in the vegetative apex, but in the flowering plant the control was exerted by the inflorescence or the elongating stem.  相似文献

The effects of varying P and K supplies on the growth and morphologyof white clover were investigated in a pot experiment. Plantswere treated with three rates of potassium (K) and four ratesof phosphorus (P) in factorial combination, and five harvestswere taken between August 1993 and February 1994. During establishment,shoot and leaf development were more adversely affected by Pthan by K deficiency but, by the final growth period, K deficiencywas the more limiting to growth, causing dramatic reductionsin leaf area index (LAI), numbers of growing points, and stolonand root masses. The adverse affects of K deficiency on shootdevelopment were attributed to the curtailment of petiole andlamina expansion which have major requirements for K. It wasnoted that, under K deficiency, proportionately less assimilatewas partitioned to leaf production than to stolon and root growth;this may be an adaptation enabling K-deficient plants to exploitnutrient supplies in adjacent localities. The results suggestthat, provided white clover can withstand ‘moderate’P stress during establishment, its persistence in swards willprobably be limited more by K deficiency than by low or inadequateP supplies. Position in and contribution of leaf laminae to the canopy of forage grasses are important both in determining herbage growth rates and intake rate by grazing animals. These canopy characteristics are controlled by the way dry matter is apportioned between sheath and lamina in growing leaves. The objective of this work was to determine how the development of individual leaves is affected by altering the effective length of the psuedostem tube, on the assumption that the light environment within the tube varied. The development of a leaf from initiation at the apex to maturity was followed by successive destructive dissections of tillers. Vertical incisions were made in the pseudostem of each tiller to three different depths. The three treatments imposed were — no incision (control), moderate and severe incision of the sheath length. Destructive harvests of tillers followed 3, 6, 12 and 24 days after imposition of treatments. Incision resulted in the length of the monitored leaf being reduced significantly at all harvests, and differentiation of the sheath beginning earlier. The length reduction reflected a reduction in both cell size and cell number and the effects were evident at the earliest harvest. The data support the theory that leaf size and timing of onset of sheath development are influenced by the environment of the developing leaf. The present results indicate that sheath tube length affects leaf development and suggests that the effects are substantially explained by a direct light effect on the location and depth of the elongation zone.  相似文献

Abstract: Monitoring surveys allow managers to document system status and provide the quantitative basis for management decision-making, and large amounts of effort and funding are devoted to monitoring. Still, monitoring surveys often fall short of providing required information; inadequacies exist in survey designs, analyses procedures, or in the ability to integrate the information into an appropriate evaluation of management actions. We describe current uses of monitoring data, provide our perspective on the value and limitations of current approaches to monitoring, and set the stage for 3 papers that discuss current goals and implementation of monitoring programs. These papers were derived from presentations at a symposium at The Wildlife Society's 13th Annual Conference in Anchorage, Alaska, USA.  相似文献
