Morphogenesis and Homology in Arthropod Limbs   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Arthropods exhibit highly diverse limb morphologies rangingfrom unbranched walking legs to multibranched swimming paddles.Understanding morphogenesis in structurally diverse limbs canbe useful for ascertaining homologies between limbs. Structurallysimilar limbs have been produced by different evolutionary modificationsof morphogenesis in certain cases. Whereas it is easy to supportthe claim that whole arthropod limbs are homologous structures,I demonstrate that it is not always possible to draw well-foundedhomologies between parts of different limbs. This result isimportant with regard to general models of appendage developmentand evolution in arthropods because it clarifies contradictoryexplanations based exclusively on gene expression data.  相似文献

Water from several oligotrophic reservoirs of the North West Water Authority at Longridge, Lancashire, supported only sparse growth of streptomycetes isolated from the reservoirs. Growth was enhanced by nutrient-amendment of the water and one common isolate, identified as Streptomyces albidoflavus , produced geosmin in water which was supplemented with sufficient concentrations of available carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus. The minimum concentrations required for geosmin production were higher than those recorded in natural reservoir water. Synthesis of geosmin in water also required a minimum temperature of about 15dEC. Sterilized samples of reservoir sediment, sediment extract, plant debris from banks and surrounding soil also supported geosmin production by S. albidoflavus. Both bank debris and exposed sediment developed earthy odours without inoculation. The structure of reservoir banks influenced the quantity of plant growth and accumulation of litter, and therefore also the potential for contamination of reservoir water by geosmin. The potential of these various sites of geosmin production to contaminate reservoir water is assessed.  相似文献

The ploidy profiles of benign and malignant tumours can be obtained using image analysis. However, the results of ploidy studies have varied according to the type of specimen used. We compared the ploidy profiles of paraffin embedded thin sections, cytospin preparations of disaggregated cells, and cytological smears from the same specimen as defined by image analysis. Ten benign breast lesions, 10 breast carcinomas and 10 malignant melanomas were investigated in this way. Preparations stained by the Feulgen technique were examined using the MD20 video image analysis densitometry system. Ploidy profiles were obtained by measuring the integrated optical density of at least 200 nuclei. By paying proper attention to the quality of fixation and presence or absence of cytoplasm around cells, comparable results were found for all preparations in each case. We therefore conclude that if careful attention is paid to the technical quality of the material, reliable ploidy results can be obtained by image analysis.  相似文献

Multivariate analyses of 393 butterfly species over 85 geographical areas (R- and Q-data matrices) in Europe and North Africa have produced a consistent pattern of faunal structures (units and regions). Prominent features to emerge are the latitudinal zonation of geographical units and the division of the Mediterranean into western and eastern components; southwards in Europe, endemicity increases whereas faunal structures decrease in spatial dimensions. Central Europe–from the Urals to the British Isles–forms a single large faunal structure (extent unit and region). A model has been constructed to account for Pleistocene evolutionary changes and endemism in European butterflies and for the east-west taxonomic divisions in the extent faunal structure which dominates central Europe. Periodic Pleistocene climatic changes have resulted in cycles of population extinction, isolation, evolution and migration, but the nature and timing of events has depended on the environmental tolerances of species belonging to different faunal units. During Pleistocene glaciations, southern species have been relatively static and more isolated and have evolved independently. By comparison, northern species have been more mobile and have migrated over large distances. Contact and hybrid zones among cosmopolitan species in northern Europe are probably of some antiquity. They result from persistent survival and isolation of refuge populations in the west and east Mediterranean during glacial phases; dispersal from these refuges leads to their regeneration during each interglacial.  相似文献

The chloride electrochemical potential difference between theinside of cells of Nitella translucens and the bathing mediumhas been measured by a direct electrical method employing Ag/AgClelectrodes. The membrane potential has been measured by meansof conventional salt bridge microelectrodes. These data havebeen used to calculate the internal chloride concentration ofthe cells; the mean value obtained was 39 mM. This chlorideelectrochemical potential difference has been short-circuitedthus causing an outward (depolarizing) electric current to flowthrough the cell membrane. The resulting membrane depolarizationhas been measured at two points along the length of the cellenabling the membrane resistance and space constant to be deduced;the respective values obtained were 24.8 Kcm2 and 3.0 cm. Itis suggested that these experiments lend additional supportto the hypothesis that during the action potential in the Characeaethere occurs a transient increase in the chloride conductanceof the plasmalemma.  相似文献

Organophosphatic shells of the brachiopod Lingula squarniformis , collected from Scottish Lower Carboniferous shales and mudstones of intertidal to sublittoral provenance, have been studied to ascertain chemico-structural changes resulting from fossilization. Enough original shell has been preserved at ultrastructural and molecular levels to confirm that Carboniferous and Recent integuments are homologous with stratiform successions of apatitic to organic laminae forming rhythmic sets. One of the main organic constituents, the acidic, hydrophilic gel glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), is the dominant component towards the tops of rhythms. During fossilization of the Carboniferous shells, GAGs degraded incrementally without disturbing apatitic ultrastructures, and the spaces so created became partly filled with sheets of recrystal-lized apatite with some kaolinite or with books and plates of kaolinite. The kaolinite in the shells contrasts with the illite of the entombing sediments and suggests that degrading acidic GAGs mediated in clay formation in situ . The sediments also contain framboidal pyrite, which is virtually absent from the shells themselves but is usually even more abundant, with a greater range of trace metals, in the sedimentary fills of complete shells. This imbalance suggests mediation by another gel, the glycocalyx, secreted by the inner epithelium of the brachiopod mantle. The glycocalyx would have lined the shell interior and could have served as a sorption film for dissolved metals precipitated as compounds on decomposition of body tissue.  相似文献

1. The effects of small-scale variation in the nature of a river bed upon the colonization dynamics of benthic invertebrates were explored through a series of microhabitat implants placed in a small river in southern Ontario. The implants presented variations in the levels of four microhabitat features: substrate particle size, current regime, added food and light. The sixteen possible combinations of these variables were replicated five times, for a total of eighty implants.
2. After 14 days of exposure, some of the controlled variables had been modified and a number of other variables (sand, fine (FPOM) and coarse (CPOM) particulate organic matter) had been added by the river.
3. Benthic diversity differed among the implants, with sand and CPOM accounting for 15.5% of the variation. Benthic density was more uniform and was weakly related only to added food. Application of the CANOCO program to the data set suggested that, in general, the environmental variables manipulated in this study were not the key factors influencing colonization, although they may have been important in non-linear combination.
4. A number of important positive associations were evident among colonizing species, some of which are thought to reflect those of predator and prey.
5. Control of colonization appears to be through multiple factors (abiotic, biotic, autochthonous, allochthonous) that differ in nature according to species, and which underline the complexity of selection responses of individual taxa to local variations in bed structure. Researchers must acknowledge this multifactorial organization and dynamic nature if workable models of lotic community structure and development are to be forthcoming.  相似文献
