Adults of the Euthalia phemius complex, which is composed of three South‐East Asian nymphalid species, Euthalia phemius, Euthalia ipona, and Euthalia euphemia, were genetically analysed by examining mitochondrial and nuclear genes. The E. phemius complex was also examined morphologically, with particular emphasis on wing markings and male genitalia. No significant differences amongst the three species in the complex were detected with respect to either genetic distance or genital morphology. We therefore conclude that the three currently recognized Euthalia species belong to a single species. Accordingly, E. ipona is synonymized with E. phemius. Euthalia euphemia is treated as a subspecies of E. phemius. Type specimens of all taxa and a synonymic list for the E. phemius complex are also given. Many colour morphs have been recognized in the Rhinogobius brunneus complex. A recent electrophoretic study has revealed that some of the colour morphs are well differentiated from each other genetically. In Okinawa, egg-size and life-history variation has been found in addition to the colour variation in this species complex. To clarify the nature of this life-history variation, gobies of a fluviatile morph with large eggs as well as three other amphidromous morphs with small eggs, inhabiting a single stream sympatrically in Okinawa, were analysed by electrophoresis and the females were also used for comparison of egg and clutch sizes. Electrophoretic data for 34 loci showed that each morph was separated by a fixed-allele difference for at least one locus, indicating that the four morphs which occurred sympatrically are reproductively isolated from each other. However, Nei's genetic distance between the fluviatile morph and one of the amphidromous morphs was much smaller (0.026) than distances among amphidromous gobies (0.323-0.480). Egg size of the former was by far the largest among the four. These results imply that speciation of the fluviatile morph accompanied by the egg-size increase has been completed rapidly without considerable genetic differentiation.  相似文献

Genetic and morphological variation was studied in a brooding (ovoviviparous) and morphologically variable freshwater snail [ Viviparus georgianus (Lea)] species complex in southern Georgia and Florida. Eleven populations were clustered into three genetically isolated, allopatric groups characterized by 7 to 14 diagnostic loci out of the 38 loci examined. These allopatric groups were identified as V. georgianus (in eastern and southern Florida), V. limi (in the Ocblockonee River) and V. goodrichi (in the Florida panhandle). Nei's standard genetic distances between the species were large (0.23-0.52) compared to intraspecific distances (0.00-0.06). Hierarchical F-statistics for differentiation among sites within drainage systems (FSD) for V. goodrichi and V. georgianus were large (0.519 and 0.387, respectively). The FDT values (differentiation among drainage systems within the total area sampled) were negative or close to zero, so most of the intraspecific genetic differentiation was due to differences among populations within drianage systems, rather than to differences among systems. Canonical discriminant analysis of nine shell morphological measurements separated all three species with little overlap. Principal components analysis of the shell morphology revealed intraspecific variation among sites possibly due to environmental effects. This study demonstrates the marked genetic and morphological variation among and within drainage systems in freshwater prosobranchs.  相似文献

Abstract. Extraorgan freezing as a mechanism for increasing cold hardiness was shown using flower buds of Cornus officinalis Sieb. et Zucc. Differential thermal analysis (DTA) revealed that florets in flower buds of C. officinalis owed their cold hardiness to deep supercooling and also that slower cooling rates increased the supercooling ability of florets. During slow stepwise cooling (5°C h−1), the water content of florets decreased and that of scales (involucral bracts) increased, which resulted in accumulation of ice within the scales. This was more extensive in early winter and early spring buds than mid-winter ones. Flower buds with silicone oil in the space between florets and scales also showed a similar decrease in water content of florets and an increase in that of scales. This indicated that water migration from the florets to the scales probably took place by way of the peduncles and the receptacle, possibly through their vascular traces, and not directly from the surface of the florets to the ice sink in the form of vapour. Possible mechanisms of extraorgan freezing are postulated along with this finding.  相似文献

To estimate the geographical extent of introgression, we studiedthe genetic structure of sympatric and allopatric populationsof hybridizing freshwater snail species Viviparus ater and V.contectus in central Europe. Six allozyme loci which were variablein Lake Garda, Italy in a previous study (five nearly diagnosticloci between the two species and one highly polymorphic locusin V. contectus) were analyzed from ten sympatric locationsand four allopatric populations each for the two species. Presumablyintrogressed genes (low allele frequencies) were found fromat least one locus in seven out of the ten sympatric sites.These seven sites covered most of northern Italy. The data indicatethat introgression has occurred from Viviparus contectus toV. ater and vice versa. Therefore, there is a possibility ofwidespread introgression or mosaic zones in nature. However,we cannot rule out that the observed patterns are due to theshared ancestry. V. ater possessed low genetic variation (thejackknifed mean of Wright's FST±S.E. over four loci was0.041±0.004). On the other hand, V. contectus showedhigh genetic differentiation (the jackknifed mean of FST±S.E. over six loci was 0.546±0.166). Although introgressionmay have caused evolutionary changes in V. ater and V. contectus,it was not strong enough to level out the genetic differencesbetween the two species, which may have originated from isolationamong populations in V. contectus and a past bottleneck eventin V. ater.
