Secondary sexual traits that are condition‐dependent are expected to reveal the physiological state and/or genetic quality of individuals, and therefore, should more often be found to be under sexual selection than (1) secondary sexual traits not currently condition‐dependent, and (2) nonsecondary sexual traits. In the present study, we contrasted the degree of condition dependence in three morphological traits of male Drosophila bipectinata: two secondary sexual traits (distinct components of the sex comb), one of which significantly predicts mating success in nature (segment 2), whereas the other does not (segment 1), and a nonsecondary sexual trait (sternopleural bristle number). As predicted, comb segment 2 decreased significantly in size, in response to increasing temperature during development, whereas comb segment 1 and sternopleural bristle number either did not change significantly, or increased with increasing temperature. These results support the hypothesis that condition‐dependence, inferred from stress‐induced reductions in trait expression, engenders a trait to sexual selection. Small‐combed genotypes did not exhibit disproportionate reductions in larva‐to‐adult survivorship and adult body size compared to large‐combed genotypes, suggesting that comb size does not reveal genotypic quality, at least as revealed by sensitivity in body size and juvenile survivorship to thermal stress. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 101 , 566–574.  相似文献

Reproductive traits of Drosophila hibisci collected at 18 sites in the Northern Territory (NT) of Australia in May, 1998, as well as at two sites in north Queensland, in June, 1998, were compared to those from earlier work on a cline in ovariole number in D. hibisci along the east coast of Australia. The flies in the NT were considerably smaller, but had more ovarioles than comparably-sized flies on the east coast. Although the flies on the east coast showed an increasing number of ovarioles in populations at increasing distances from the equator, these new populations, both on the east coast and in the NT, reversed this trend, producing a generally U-shaped pattern of ovariole number with latitude among all populations. The northernmost and southernmost populations allocate more to ovariole numbers than populations in intermediate latitudes. Ovariole number is closely related to body size of females in all populations, but the regression coefficient is small at intermediate latitudes and increases at the northern and southern ends of the distribution. Egg volumes primarily varied with body size of the female (positive) and number of ovarioles per female (negatively), producing a generally inverted U-shaped pattern of egg volumes with latitude. Reproductive allocation patterns, but not thorax size or ovariole number, varied significantly in two samples taken 10 days apart at one NT site. This variation probably results from environmental differences across generations of developing larvae and is consistent with our earlier suggestion of substantial effects of the environment, primarily rainfall and temperature, on reproductive allocation in D. hibisci.  相似文献

Ophyra Robineau‐Desvoidy is one of the better‐studied genera of the family Muscidae (Diptera). The larvae of species of this genus feed on highly decomposed organic matter of various origins, and may reveal predatory behaviour as they mature. These feeding habits, combined with the widespread distribution and close association with human dwellings of some species, give the genus commercial and medico‐legal importance. However, the systematic position of Ophyra has been a matter of debate for many years. Ophyra has been considered by muscid workers to be either a valid genus or a junior synonym of Hydrotaea Robineau‐Desvoidy. A lack of agreement about the systematic position of Ophyra has led to serious errors, particularly in the applied literature. Recent molecular and morphological studies provided contradictory information on the validity of the genus and its subfamilial classification. We revise the systematic position of Ophyra herein by means of molecular phylogenetic reconstruction. Our results are incongruent with opinions on the systematic position of Ophyra based on previously published molecular phylogenies, although they correspond with the concept of the genus based on adult morphology. All analyses of the concatenated dataset revealed Ophyra as monophyletic and placed within a paraphyletic Azeliini. Depending on the phylogenetic approach, Ophyra was placed within either a monophyletic, paraphyletic or polyphyletic Hydrotaea, yet always closely related to a certain group of species. We conclude that Ophyra, as currently defined, should not be considered a valid name, yet a detailed reconstruction of the genus Hydrotaea awaits future studies with greater increases in both taxon sampling and the number of molecular markers.  相似文献

We have reviewed fine needle aspirates from 11 patients with pancreatic endocrine tumours and evaluated the diagnostic criteria as well as those proposed in the literature in an attempt to formulate reliable criteria for the cytological diagnosis of these tumours. As expected, no single criterion was reliable for diagnosis: however, cells with rounded or polygonal rather than a columnar shape, cytoplasmic granularity, and eccentricity of round or oval nuclei with a finely stippled, evenly distributed chromatin pattern were features which taken together, usually enabled one to make a reliable diagnosis. A striking feature of the smears was the cellular monotony and absence of pleomorphism of the tumour cells. Immunocytochemistry and electron microscopy identified tumour products and confirmed the diagnosis.  相似文献

Males developing relatively large, costly sexually selected traits may be of superior body condition compared to small-ornamented males. Thus, males developing the largest secondary sexual trait in a given environment may also be able to augment their investment into ejaculate quality, and fertilize a larger proportion of a female's eggs. We tested the prediction that the degree of expression of a condition-dependent secondary sexual trait, the male sex comb, in a Cape Tribulation (northeastern Australia) population of Drosophila bipectinata Duda, reveals male ability to fertilize eggs in the absence of sperm competition. This test permitted us also to evaluate whether pre-copulatory sexual selection and fertilization efficiency might act additively to influence male reproductive success because a previous study of the same population demonstrated a positive association between comb size and copulation probability. The results obtained indicate that, although genotypes developing smaller sex combs collectively had a significantly higher rate of insemination failure compared to larger comb genotypes, the hatch rate and the number of eggs laid by females inseminated by the two genotypic categories were not statistically different. We investigated the anatomical and ultrastructural featuresof transgenic tobacco plants that overexpressed a gene of histoneH1 from Arabidopsis thaliana. The overexpression of the heterologousgene resulted in more than a 2.5-fold increase over the physiologicallevel of the histone H1:DNA ratio in chromatin. H1-overexpressingplants had a distinct mutant phenotype characterized by dwarfappearance and severely hampered flowering. These changes wereaccompanied by extensive and unusual heterochromatinizationof nuclei occurring in all leaf parenchymal cells but not inleaf epidermal cells. The observed anomalies in the growth rateand size of the cells and in nuclei/chloroplast proportionsin histone H1-overexpressing plants suggest that the H1:DNAratio can influence some specialized cellular functions involvingthe cytoskeleton, and nuclear/organellar interactions whichare of importance for the normal development of a plant. Biometrics, plumage and bare-part colour of 87 Great Bitterns Botaurus stellaris from the UK, France, Italy, Poland and Belarus, of known sex (sexed by behaviour, DNA or dissection), were analysed to provide reliable sexing and ageing criteria for this little-known species, and to investigate geographical variation in biometrics. Four parameters were analysed: bill length, tarsus, wing length and body weight. We found little (though significant) geographical variation across Europe, but this was not clinal and we cannot exclude variation in measurement technique among observers. Males were significantly larger than females for all biometric parameters: a discriminant function based on these parameters was able to sex correctly all individuals. Body weight varied with season, especially for males. During the breeding period, lore colour was also a reliable sex-criterion. Ageing proved more difficult and required a combination of iris colour (which darkens with age) and flight-feather moult. From this, the largest sample size of known-age Great Bitterns, we conclude that most previously published criteria for age determination of this species were wrong.  相似文献

1. Dispersal is essential for locating mates, new resources, and to escape unfavourable conditions. Parasitism can impact a host's ability to perform energetically demanding activities such as long‐distance flight, with important consequences for gene flow and meta‐population dynamics. 2. Ectoparasites, in particular, can adversely affect host flight performance by diminishing flight aerodynamics and/or by inflicting physiological damage while feeding on host tissue. 3. Experimental flight assays were conducted using two fruit fly‐mite systems: Drosophila nigrospiracula (Patterson and Wheeler) – Macrocheles subbadius (Berlese) and D. hydei (Sturtevan) – M. muscaedomesticae (Scopoli). Flies that are burdened by mites are expected to exhibit lower flight endurance compared to uninfected flies. 4. The results show that the presence of mites (attached) significantly decreased flight endurance by 57% and 78% compared to uninfected D. nigrospiracula and D. hydei, respectively. The physiological damage caused by M. subbadius was revealed through a 53% decline in flight time among previously infected flies (mites removed just prior to flight assay). Surprisingly, the presumably phoretic M. muscaedomesticae also caused a 62% reduction in flight endurance among previously infected D. hydei. 5. These results suggest a strong deleterious effect of ectoparasitic mites on host flight performance, mediated by a reduction in flight aerodynamics and damage to host physiology. Adverse effects on host flight and/or dispersal may have broad implications for gene flow, population genetic structure, and local adaptation in both host and parasite meta‐populations.  相似文献

The statistics of detecting positional fluctuating asymmetry   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The detection of asymmetry can be difficult because the signals indicating right–left differences are frequently weak. When bilaterally symmetric organisms can be further inspected for positional asymmetry (differences between body sides in the placement of meristic traits) anterior–posterior allocation may provide additional evidence for fluctuating asymmetry. Statistical power comparisons were made for indices used to measure fluctuating (FA) and positional fluctuating asymmetry (PFA) in meristic traits. Monte Carlo simulations of developmental and random processes were used to generate null and alternative distributions of a hypothetical meristic trait (such as bristle counts). The counts were used to calculate the corresponding distributions of six indices used to detect fluctuating and positional fluctuating asymmetry. Power comparisons show that there is no single best index. If positional deviations are strong relative to bilateral errors then pfa1 is generally the most powerful, while fa, the G-statistic, and in some instances the procrustes-distance measure do best when there is little positional deviation relative to side-to-side deviations. The decision on what index is best is thus influenced by knowledge of the likely sources of error.
