Purpose
The inclusion of land-use activities in life cycle assessment (LCA) has been subject to much debate in the LCA community. Despite the recent methodological developments in this area, the impacts of land occupation and transformation on its long-term ability to produce biomass (referred to here as biotic production potential [BPP]) — an important endpoint for the Area of Protection (AoP) Natural Resources — have been largely excluded from LCAs partly due to the lack of life cycle impact assessment methods.Materials and methods
Several possible methods/indicators for BPP associated with biomass, carbon balance, soil erosion, salinisation, energy, soil biota and soil organic matter (SOM) were evaluated. The latter indicator was considered the most appropriate for LCA, and characterisation factors for eight land use types at the climate region level were developed.Results and discussion
Most of the indicators assessed address land-use impacts satisfactorily for land uses that include biotic production of some kind (agriculture or silviculture). However, some fail to address potentially important land use impacts from other life cycle stages, such as those arising from transport. It is shown that the change in soil organic carbon (SOC) can be used as an indicator for impacts on BPP, because SOC relates to a range of soil properties responsible for soil resilience and fertility.Conclusions
The characterisation factors developed suggest that the proposed approach to characterize land use impacts on BBP, despite its limitations, is both possible and robust. The availability of land-use-specific and biogeographically differentiated data on SOC makes BPP impact assessments operational. The characterisation factors provided allow for the assessment of land-use impacts on BPP, regardless of where they occur thus enabling more complete LCAs of products and services. Existing databases on every country’s terrestrial carbon stocks and land use enable the operability of this method. Furthermore, BPP impacts will be better assessed by this approach as increasingly spatially specific data are available for all geographical regions of the world at a large scale. Goal, Scope and Background Gipuzkoa is a department of the Vasque Country (Spain) with a population of about 700,000 people. By the year 2000 approximately
85% of municipal solid waste in this area was managed by landfilling, and only 15% was recycled. Due to environmental law
restrictions and landfill capacity being on its limit, a planning process was initiated by the authorities. LCA was used,
from an environmental point of view, to assess 7 possible scenarios arising from the draft Plan for the 2016 time horizon.
Main Features In each scenario, 9 waste flows are analysed: rest waste, paper and cardboard, glass containers, light packaging, organic-green
waste, as well as industrial/commercial wood, metals and plastics, and wastewater sludge. Waste treatments range from recycling
to energy recovery and landfilling.
Results Recycling of the waste flows separated at the source (paper and cardboard, glass, light packaging, organic-green waste, wood
packaging, metals and plastics) results in net environmental benefits caused by the substitution of primary materials, except
in water consumption. These benefits are common to the 7 different scenarios analysed. However, some inefficiencies are detected,
mainly the energy consumption in collection and transport of low density materials, and water consumption in plastic recycling.
The remaining flows, mixed waste and wastewater sludge, are the ones causing the major environmental impacts, by means of
incineration, landfilling of partially stabilised organic material, as well as thermal drying of sludge. With the characterisation
results, none of the seven scenarios can be clearly identified as the most preferable, although, due to the high recycling
rates expected by the Plan, net environmental benefits are achieved in 9 out of 10 impact categories in all scenarios when
integrated waste management is assessed (the sum of the 9 flows of waste). Finally, there are no relevant differences between
scenarios concerning the number of treatment plants considered. Nevertheless, only the effects on transportation impacts were
assessed in the LCA, since the plant construction stage was excluded from the system boundaries.
Conclusions The results of the study show the environmental importance of material recycling in waste management, although the recycling
schemes assessed can be improved in some aspects. It is also important to highlight the environmental impact of incineration
and landfilling of waste, as well as thermal drying of sludge using fossil fuels. One of the main findings of applying LCA
to integrated waste management in Gipuzkoa is the fact that the benefits of high recycling rates can compensate for the impacts
of mixed waste and wastewater sludge.
Recommendations and Outlook Although none of the scenarios can be clearly identified as the one having the best environmental performance, the authorities
in Gipuzkoa now have objective information about the future scenarios, and a multidisciplinary panel could be formed in order
to weight the impacts if necessary. In our opinion, LCA was successfully applied in Gipuzkoa as an environmental tool for

Life cycle assessment (LCA) was used to compare the current water supply planning in Mediterranean Spain, the so‐called AGUA Programme, with its predecessor, the Ebro river water transfer (ERWT). Whereas the ERWT was based on a single interbasin transfer, the AGUA Programme excludes new transfers and focuses instead on different types of resources, including seawater and brackish water desalination and wastewater reuse, among others. The study includes not only water supply but the whole anthropic cycle of water, from water abstraction to wastewater treatment. In addition to standard LCA impact categories, a specific impact category focusing on freshwater resources is included, which takes into account freshwater scarcity in the affected water catchments. In most impact categories the AGUA Programme obtains similar or even lower impact scores than ERWT. Concerning impacts on freshwater resources, the AGUA Programme obtains an impact score 49% lower than the ERWT. Although the current water planning appears to perform better in many impact categories than its predecessor, this study shows that water supply in Spanish Mediterranean regions is substantially increasing its energy intensity and that Mediterranean basins suffer a very high level of water stress due to increasing demand and limited resources. 相似文献

Atypical antipsychotics show preferential 5-HT 2A versus dopamine (DA) D2 receptor affinity. At clinical doses, they fully occupy cortical 5-HT2 receptors, which suggests a strong relationship with their therapeutic action. Half of the pyramidal neurones in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) express 5-HT 2A receptors. Also, neurones excited through 5-HT 2A receptors project to the ventral tegmental area (VTA). We therefore hypothesized that prefrontal 5-HT 2A receptors can modulate DA transmission through excitatory mPFC-VTA inputs. In this study we used single unit recordings to examine the responses of DA neurones to local (in the mPFC) and systemic administration of the 5-HT 2A/2C agonist 1-[2,5-dimethoxy-4-iodophenyl-2-aminopropane] (DOI). Likewise, using microdialysis, we examined DA release in the mPFC and VTA (single/dual probe) in response to prefrontal and systemic drug administration. The local (in the mPFC) and systemic administration of DOI increased the firing rate and burst firing of DA neurones and DA release in the VTA and mPFC. The increase in VTA DA release was mimicked by the electrical stimulation of the mPFC. The effects of DOI were reversed by M100907 and ritanserin. These results indicate that the activity of VTA DA neurones is under the excitatory control of 5-HT 2A receptors in the mPFC. These observations may help in the understanding of the therapeutic action of atypical antipsychotics. 相似文献

This paper examines the phylogeny of Erodium subsect. Petraea, a group of six morphologically and genetically very similar species from the mountains of the western Mediterranean. Combined trnL-F-ITS analysis was unable to determine the phylogenetic relationships of these species owing to sequence similarity. AFLP fragment analysis showed different populations to cluster in six closely related phylogroups that partially coincided with morphological species. In the Iberian Peninsula, high temperatures during interstadial periods probably impeded the survival of these species at low altitudes, and their populations may have been forced to migrate northward within Iberia or remain isolated on high mountains. AFLP variation suggests that this might have led to their differentiation into groups and speciation during interglacials, but it probably also provided the basis for recurrent recolonisations and the mixing of neighbouring populations at the last glacial maxima. The genetic diversity of the two Erodium lineages suggests two migration episodes took place from southern Iberia towards the north, with one lineage migrating via western Iberia and the other via eastern Iberia. The patterns of genetic diversity observed in populations of 56 European species (27 genera) leads to the hypothesis that disparate proportions of unique polymorphic fragments are the result of the evolutionary histories of their mountain populations irrespective of the currently recognised species. 相似文献

Background, Aim and Scope
Land use by agriculture, forestry, mining, house-building or industry leads to substantial impacts, particularly on biodiversity
and on soil quality as a supplier of life support functions. Unfortunately there is no widely accepted assessment method so
far for land use impacts. This paper presents an attempt, within the UNEP-SETAC Life Cycle Initiative, to provide a framework
for the Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) of land use.
Materials and Methods:
This framework builds from previous documents, particularly the SETAC book on LCIA (Lindeijer et al. 2002), developing essential
issues such as the reference for occupation impacts; the impact pathways to be included in the analysis; the units of measure
in the impact mechanism (land use interventions to impacts); the ways to deal with impacts in the future; and bio-geographical
differentiation.
Results:
The paper describes the selected impact pathways, linking the land use elementary flows (occupation; transformation) and parameters
(intensity) registered in the inventory (LCI) to the midpoint impact indicators and to the relevant damage categories (natural
environment and natural resources). An impact occurs when the land properties are modified (transformation) and also when
the current man-made properties are maintained (occupation).
Discussion:
The size of impact is the difference between the effect on land quality from the studied case of land use and a suitable reference
land use on the same area (dynamic reference situation). The impact depends not only on the type of land use (including coverage
and intensity) but is also heavily influenced by the bio-geographical conditions of the area. The time lag between the land
use intervention and the impact may be large; thus land use impacts should be calculated over a reasonable time period after
the actual land use finishes, at least until a new steady state in land quality is reached.
Conclusions:
Guidance is provided on the definition of the dynamic reference situation and on methods and time frame to assess the impacts
occurring after the actual land use. Including the occupation impacts acknowledges that humans are not the sole users of land.
Recommendations and Perspectives:
The main damages affected by land use that should be considered by any method to assess land use impacts in LCIA are: biodiversity
(existence value); biotic production potential (including soil fertility and use value of biodiversity); ecological soil quality
(including life support functions of soil other than biotic production potential). Bio-geographical differentiation is required
for land use impacts, because the same intervention may have different consequences depending on the sensitivity and inherent
land quality of the environment where it occurs. For the moment, an indication of how such task could be done and likely bio-geographical
parameters to be considered are suggested. The recommendation of indicators for the suggested impact categories is a matter
