Aims Our study was conducted in the Nokrek Biosphere Reserve (NBR) in the Garo hills districts of Meghalaya, Northeast India. Our aim was to assess the effects of human activities on plant diversity,population structure and regeneration.Methods We selected a representative 1.2 hm2 stand in both the core and buffer zones of NBR. Structure and composition were determined by randomly sampling square quadrats, population structure was assessed by determining age structure, and regeneration was assessed by measuring densities of seedling, sapling and adult trees.Important findings More woody species were recorded from the core zone than the buffer zone (87 vs. 81 species), and there were a large number of tropical, temperate, and Sino-Himalayan, Burma-Malaysian and Malayan elements, primitive families and primitive genera. The trees were distributed in three distinct strata,canopy, subcanopy and sapling. Subcanopy and sapling layers had the highest species richness (81% -88% ). Lauraceae and Euphorbiaceae were the dominant families in terms of the number of species, and a large number of families were represented by single species. Most woody species (57 % - 79 % ) were contagiously distributed and had low frequency ( < 20% ). Although stand density was high in the buffer zone, its basal area was low compared to the stand in the core zone. Low similarity and high β-diversity indicate marked differences in species composition of the stands. Shannon diversity index was high in both the stands, while Simpson dominance index was low. The diameter-class distribution for dominant species revealed that the most had a large number of young individuals in their populations. Preponderance of tree seedlings, followed by a steep decline in population density of saplings and adult trees, indicated that the seedling to sapling stage was the most critical in the life cycle of the tree populations. Most species (42 % - 48 % ) had no regeneration,25 % - 35 % had good/fair regeneration, and the rest had poor regeneration or reoccurred as immigrants.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to evaluate summer and fall residency and habitat selection by gray whales, Eschrichtius robustus, together with the biomass of benthic amphipod prey on the coastal feeding grounds along the Chukotka Peninsula. Thirteen gray whales were instrumented with satellite transmitters in September 2006 near the Chukotka Peninsula, Russia. Nine transmitters provided positions from whales for up to 81?days. The whales travelled within 5?km of the Chukotka coast for most of the period they were tracked with only occasional movements offshore. The average daily travel speeds were 23?km?day?1 (range 9–53?km?day?1). Four of the whales had daily average travel speeds <1?km?day?1 suggesting strong fidelity to the study area. The area containing 95% of the locations for individual whales during biweekly periods was on average 13,027?km2 (range 7,097–15,896?km2). More than 65% of all locations were in water <30?m, and between 45 and 70% of biweekly kernel home ranges were located in depths between 31 and 50?m. Benthic density of amphipods within the Bering Strait at depths <50?m was on average ~54?g wet wt m?2 in 2006. It is likely that the abundant benthic biomass is more than sufficient forage to support the current gray whale population. The use of satellite telemetry in this study quantifies space use and movement patterns of gray whales along the Chukotka coast and identifies key feeding areas.  相似文献

Blood-brain barrier dysfunction is a serious consequence of inflammatory brain diseases, cerebral infections, and trauma. The proinflammatory cytokine interleukin (IL)-1β is central to neuroinflammation and contributes to brain microvascular leakage and edema formation. Although it is well known that IL-1β exposure directly induces hyperpermeability in brain microvascular endothelium, the molecular mechanisms mediating this response are not completely understood. In the present study, we found that exposure of the human brain microvascular endothelium to IL-1β triggered activation of novel PKC isoforms δ, μ, and θ, followed by decreased transendothelial electrical resistance (TER). The IL-1β-induced decrease in TER was prevented by small hairpin RNA silencing of PKC-θ or by treatment with the isoform-selective PKC inhibitor G?6976 but not by PKC inhibitors that are selective for all PKC isoforms other than PKC-θ. Decreased TER coincided with increased phosphorylation of regulatory myosin light chain and with increased proapoptotic signaling indicated by decreased uptake of mitotracker red in response to IL-1β treatment. However, neither of these observed effects were prevented by G?6976 treatment, indicating lack of causality with respect to decreased TER. Instead, our data indicated that the mechanism of decreased TER involves PKC-θ-dependent phosphorylation of the tight junction protein zona occludens (ZO)-1. Because IL-1β is a central inflammatory mediator, our interpretation is that inhibition of PKC-θ or inhibition of ZO-1 phosphorylation could be viable strategies for preventing blood-brain barrier dysfunction under a variety of neuroinflammatory conditions.  相似文献

The experiments were carried out on two groups of rats with obstruction or cannulation of bile duct. Plasma was obtained from the tail venous blood before and 24 hours after operation. The bile duct obstruction caused hypercholesterolemia and considerable increase in the cholesterol content of low-density and very low-density lipoprotein (cholesterol bound to LDL and VLDL). Cannulation of total bile duct slightly increased CH-LDL+VLDL. The change in concentration of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol was insignificant in both models of bile disturbance while index of atherogenesis increased.  相似文献

Although most eastern North Pacific (ENP) gray whales feed in the Bering, Beaufort, and Chukchi Seas during summer and fall, a small number of individuals, referred to as the Pacific Coast Feeding Group (PCFG), show intra‐ and interseasonal fidelity to feeding areas from northern California through southeastern Alaska. We used both mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and 12 microsatellite markers to assess whether stock structure exists among feeding grounds used by ENP gray whales. Significant mtDNA differentiation was found when samples representing the PCFG (n = 71) were compared with samples (n = 103) collected from animals feeding further north (FST = 0.012, P = 0.0045). No significant nuclear differences were detected. These results indicate that matrilineal fidelity plays a role in creating structure among feeding grounds but suggests that individuals from different feeding areas may interbreed. Haplotype diversities were similar between strata (hPCFG = 0.945, hNorthern = 0.952), which, in combination with the low level of mtDNA differentiation identified, suggested that some immigration into the PCFG could be occurring. These results are important in evaluating the management of ENP gray whales, especially in light of the Makah Tribe's proposal to resume whaling in an area of the Washington coast utilized by both PCFG and migrating whales.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. A medium for the axenic cultivation of Entamoeba invadens has been developed. Serum, an essential constituent of conventional media, has been replaced by a mixture of albumin, unsaturated fatty acids, Tween, and cholesterol to control the lipid composition of the medium. Entamoeba invadens requires both cholesterol and unsaturated fatty acids for growth. The fatty acid composition of the phospholipids of the ameba reflects that of the medium to a great extent, especially with regard to the unsaturated fatty acids. The amount of membrane bounded cholesterol depends on the cholesterol concentration in the medium.  相似文献

Changes in nano-scale subsystems of rat femurs due to the axial unloading of hindlimbs are studied by means of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). After irradiation by 60Co isotopes, the results indicate that weightlessness simulation leads to formation of free radicals in tropocollagen molecules and to a reduction in the amount of CO2 radicals, located on the surface of bioapatite nanocrystals.  相似文献

The genetic structure of four summer aggregations of the Beluga Whale, Delphinapterus leucas, in Sakhalin Bay and Udskaya Bay, off the western coast of Kamchatka in the Sea of Okhotsk and in the Anadyr Estuary of the Bering Sea was analyzed through nucleotide sequencing of the mtDNA control region and detection of the allelic composition of nine microsatellite loci in nuclear DNA. It has been shown that each of the aggregations features a unique set of maternal lines, which indicates a high degree of philopatry in this species. Beluga whales of the Anadyr Estuary are genetically isolated from those of the Sea of Okhotsk. Beluga whales of the summer aggregations of Sakhalin Bay and those from Udskaya Bay share a common gene pool and belong to a single population, while the whales that summer off western Kamchatka with great consistency may be attributed to a different population. Comparison of nucleotide sequences of the mtDNA in beluga whales from various waters of the Russian Far East and North America allowed us to propose a hypothesis about how the structure of beluga whale populations formed in the North Pacific during the postglacial period.  相似文献

The cytochrome P-450-dependent monooxygenase system of the liver was studied in laboratory noninbred male rats selected according to the intensity of their initial alcohol motivation and the dynamics of these parameters was followed up during 10-day alcoholisation. It was shown that in the animals inclined to the development of alcoholism the activity of the monooxygenase system (cytochrome P-450, B5; enzymes: aminopyrine N-demethylase, aniline p-hydroxylase, NADPH-cytochrome c-reductase) is higher than in the animals noninclined to the development of this disease. 10-day alcohol consumption in the free-choice situation between water and 15% ethanol solution did not change the parameters investigated. The only exception was NADPH-cytochrome c-reductase: its activity grew in both the groups of the animals by 40-75%.  相似文献

The main task of the present study is to investigate the influences of normobaric gas mixture with lowered PO2 (90-110 mm Hg) on the bones metabolism in rats after hind limb unloaded (HLU). We observed increased the glycosaminoglicans (GAG) concentration in blood serum rats with hind limb unloaded in atmospheric air (AA). An increased activity of acid phosphatase (AcP) and tartratresistant acid phosphatase (TRAcP) in blood serum of rats after HLU was observed. The activities of the alkaline phosphatase (AIP) in blood serum did not change. An increased osteocalcin (OST) and C-terminal Propeptide of type I Collagen (CICP) concentration in blood serum, but parathyroid hormone (PTH) decrease comparatively with the control. The above mentioned biochemistry markers in animals after 28 days unloading in normobaric gas mixture (NGM) were more stable and in spite of the same procedure in AA, all dates were near to the controls.  相似文献
