Summary Investigations on young Japanese larch trees growing on a heterogeneous site, have revealed significant linear correlations between the height of the trees and concentrations of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and ash in the needles, but only doubtfully so in the case of calcium. Analysis of the multiple regression of height on the concentrations of these nutrients suggests that only the contributions made by nitrogen and potassium are significant and a regression equation relating height to the concentration of these two nutrients in the needles has been calculated. The function 123.27% N + 188.69% K – 180.91 provides an estimate of tree height with a standard error of ± 40.9 cm and with a highly significant multiple correlation coefficient of .916. It is argued from these results that, under the conditions of the experiment and the range of concentrations encountered, the height growth of the trees is limited by deficiencies in both nitrogen and potassium. 相似文献

Intranasal infection of BALB/c mice with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)-A2 (0.5 x 10(8) - 2.0 x 10(8) plaque-forming units, PFU) produced disease characterized by weight loss (2-3 g) and mortality (60%-100%) with the mean day of death ranging from 6-7 d after infection. The extent of RSV disease was inoculum titer-dependent and required a replication competent virus. Lung titers of virus peaked at 0.5-1 x 10(6) PFU/g wet weight. Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) levels of IL-1beta, TNF-alpha, INF-gamma IL-12, IL-6, MIP-1alpha, RANTES, and protein were elevated, whereas IL-2, IL-4, IL-5, IL-13, and IL-10 were unchanged. Histological assessment of lungs revealed marked inflammatory pathology characterized by bronchiolitis, vasculitis, and interstitial pneumonia. Whole-body plethysmography revealed significant disease-associated deficits of respiratory function. Therapy with ribavirin administered either by the intranasal, subcutaneous, or oral route significantly reduced disease in a dose-dependent manner. Delaying the initiation of therapy resulted in a loss of activity for ribavirin. Synagis administered either intramuscularly as a single dose in prophylaxis or intranasally in prophylaxis, followed by therapy, also significantly reduced disease in a dose-dependent manner. Infection of mice with a high titer inoculum of RSV-A2 resulted in severe and fatal pulmonary disease that was responsive to treatment. - Red wood ants (Formica rufa group) are the dominant ant species in European forests that can affect the abundance of other arthropods (e.g. herbivorous insects in tree canopies or beetles on the forest floor).
- Notably, ants can prevent pine weevils (Hylobius abietis) from feeding on conifer seedlings supplied with food sources for ants. This is a potentially important observation because the weevil is a serious pest in forest regeneration areas.
- We hypothesized that frequent encounters between red wood ants and pine weevils on the ground may decrease the weevils' feeding on conifer seedlings. To test this hypothesis, we compared feeding damage caused by pine weevils on spruce seedlings in areas with high and low abundance of red wood ants.
- Despite a four‐fold difference in the numbers of ants in pitfall trap samples, there were no significant differences between areas with high and low ant abundance in terms of feeding‐scar areas, proportions of attacked seedlings or proportions of killed seedlings.
- Thus, in contrast to previously documented deterrent effects on ground‐dwelling beetles, high abundance of ants on the ground did not influence the feeding activity of pine weevils on the spruce seedlings. We conclude that the mechanisms underlying seedling protection by ants are probably mainly related to the ants' protection of food sources, whereas the frequency of encounters elsewhere has less effect on the weevils' feeding.

95 kd sperm proteins bind ZP3 and serve as tyrosine kinase substrates in response to zona binding 总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11
In the mouse, the zona pellucida (ZP) glycoprotein ZP3 both binds intact sperm and induces acrosomal exocytosis. The subsequent signaling pathway(s) is still uncertain, but Gi-like proteins have been implicated. By analogy with other signal transduction mechanisms, we examined anti-phosphotyrosine antibody reactivity in mouse sperm. Antibodies reacted with three proteins of 52, 75, and 95 kd. Indirect immunofluorescence localized reactivity to the acrosomal region of the sperm head. The 52 kd and 75 kd phosphoproteins are detected only in capacitated sperm, whereas the 95 kd protein is detected in both fresh and capacitated sperm. For the 95 kd protein, the level of immunoreactivity is not related to sperm motility but is enhanced by both capacitation and sperm interaction with solubilized ZP proteins. In addition, binding of radiolabeled whole ZP or purified ZP3 to blots of separated sperm proteins identified two ZP binding proteins of 95 kd and 42 kd. 95 kd sperm proteins that bind to ZP3 also react with anti-phosphotyrosine antibodies (in a ZP concentration-dependent manner), supporting the idea that the same 95 kd sperm protein serves as a ZP3 receptor and as a tyrosine kinase substrate. These findings and our evidence on acrosome reaction triggering via sperm receptor aggregation suggest that a 95 kd protein in the sperm plasma membrane is aggregated by ZP3, which stimulates tyrosine kinase activity leading to acrosomal exocytosis. 相似文献

Protocadherin-1 (PCDH1) is a novel susceptibility gene for airway hyperresponsiveness, first identified in families exposed to cigarette smoke and is expressed in bronchial epithelial cells. Here, we asked how mouse Pcdh1 expression is regulated in lung structural cells in vivo under physiological conditions, and in both short-term cigarette smoke exposure models characterized by airway inflammation and hyperresponsiveness and chronic cigarette smoke exposure models. Pcdh1 gene-structure was investigated by Rapid Amplification of cDNA Ends. Pcdh1 mRNA and protein expression was investigated by qRT-PCR, western blotting using isoform-specific antibodies. We observed 87% conservation of the Pcdh1 nucleotide sequence, and 96% conservation of the Pcdh1 protein sequence between men and mice. We identified a novel Pcdh1 isoform encoding only the intracellular signalling motifs. Cigarette smoke exposure for 4 consecutive days markedly reduced Pcdh1 mRNA expression in lung tissue (3 to 4-fold), while neutrophilia and airway hyperresponsiveness was induced. Moreover, Pcdh1 mRNA expression in lung tissue was reduced already 6 hours after an acute cigarette-smoke exposure in mice. Chronic exposure to cigarette smoke induced loss of Pcdh1 protein in lung tissue after 2 months, while Pcdh1 protein levels were no longer reduced after 9 months of cigarette smoke exposure. We conclude that Pcdh1 is highly homologous to human PCDH1, encodes two transmembrane proteins and one intracellular protein, and is regulated by cigarette smoke exposure in vivo. 相似文献
