Parasites are known to alter the behavior of their hosts, but little is known about their effects on responses to sexual stimuli. Periplaneta americanainfected with the acanthocephalan Moniliformis moniliformiswere compared to uninfected animals in their behavioral and electroantennogram responses to a synthetic P. americanapheromone component, periplanone-B, and a pheromone mimic, bornyl acetate. In a t-maze there was no significant difference between infected animals' responses to periplanone-B and a random binomial distribution; the responses of uninfected animals were significantly nonrandom. The electroan-tennogram responses of infected and uninfected animals to bornyl acetate or periplanone-B did not differ significantly, however, indicating that the alteration probably does not occur at the peripheral level but at a central nervous system level. 相似文献

13C-based three-dimensional 1H–1H correlation experiments have been used to determine essentially complete 13C and 1H resonance assignments for the amino acid side chains of uniformly 13C/15N labelled L. casei dihydrofolate reductase in a complex with the drug methotrexate. Understanding the factors that influence plant distributions is a considerable challenge for ecologists in the face of environmental
change. Here, we quantify spatial and temporal variation in the finite rate of population increase of the annual grass Vulpia fasciculata. Specifically, we test the hypothesis that the northern range boundary is associated with finite rates of population increase
of less than one. Seeds of three ecotypes of the annual grass V. fasciculata were introduced annually across a range of sites in Great Britain both within (11) and to the north (4) of its current range
boundary in each of 4 years. Populations failed to establish at 17% of target sites due to disturbance. At the remaining target
sites, the finite rate of population increase, λ, varied from 0.06 to 33.3 with a geometric mean of 1.88. Of the total variance
in the rate of population growth, site and year effects accounted independently for 40% of the variation and in interaction
for 50%; ecotype accounted for less than 5% of the variation. Variation in the weather between sites and years had little
impact on plant performance, and there was no indication that the rate of population growth was lower to the north of the
current range boundary. We conclude that current climatic conditions on the coast of Great Britain are not limiting the distribution
of V. fasciculata and that seeds from across its current range have roughly equivalent colonising potential. 相似文献

We tested if subalpine heath vegetation in northern Italy recovered after experimental perturbation of soil nutrient availability
(fertilization) and species composition (removal of co-dominant dwarf shrubs). Species cover was assessed non-destructively
before the start of the treatments (1995), at the end of the treatments (1999) and 4 years after the treatments ended (2003).
Shrub removal had rather modest effects on heath vegetation, except for mosses which decreased significantly in removal plots.
Fertilization decreased the cover of shrubs, mosses, and some graminoids but increased the cover of Festuca rubra. Fertilization converted heath to grassland, but the response of graminoid species was individualistic. Fertilization decreased
vascular species richness and evenness, probably through negative effects of shading and litter accumulation on plant growth
or recruitment. The vegetation had not recovered completely 4 years after the perturbations had stopped. This suggests that,
in contrast to rapid responses to species removal and fertilization, recovery from these perturbations was rather slow, presumably
because recovery was affected by long-term biotic interactions and species controls on ecosystem properties. 相似文献

Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT) contributes to the junctional diversity of immunoglobulin and T-cell receptors
by incorporating nucleotides in a template-independent manner. A closely related enzyme, polymerase μ (polμ), a template-directed
polymerase, plays a role in general end-joining double-strand break repair. We cloned zebrafish TdT and polμ and found them
to be 43% identical in amino acid sequence. Comparisons with sequences of other species revealed conserved residues typical
for TdT in the zebrafish sequence that support the template independence of this enzyme. Some but not all of these features
were identified in zebrafish polμ. In adult fish, TdT expression was most prominent in thymus, pro- and mesonephros, the primary
lymphoid organs in teleost fish and in spleen, intestine, and the tissue around the intestine. Polμ expression was detected
not only in pro- and mesonephros, the major sites for B-lymphocyte development, but also in ovary and testis and in all tissue
preparations to a low extent. TdT expression starts at 4 dpf and increases thereafter. Polμ is expressed at all times to a
similar extent. In situ studies showed a strong expression of TdT and polμ in the thymic cortex of 8-week-old fish. The characterization
of zebrafish TdT and polμ provide new insights in fish lymphopoiesis and addresses the importance and evolution of TdT and

This research explores the role of opinion-based groups in understanding responses to racist violence such as the 2005 Cronulla riots in Australia. Traditionally, explanations of collective action in social psychology and sociology focus on conflict between broad social categories. We propose that the responses to the riots can be understood not only as inter-group conflict between Muslims and non-Muslims, or an in-group argument amongst non-Muslims, but as a bona fide inter-group conflict between supporters and opponents of the riots. We argue that these groups use rhetoric in attempts to claim dominant status within society by aligning their identities with positively valued social categories such as ethnicities and national identities. The analysis of rhetoric from the groups supporting and opposing the riots demonstrates consistent, albeit contested, attempts to align support for the riot with the Australian national category in conflict with countervailing attempts to align opposition to the riot with the same national category. 相似文献

An enzyme which catalyzes the deamidation of thyroliberin (TRF; less than Glu-His-Pro-NH2) has been purified 110-fold from extracts of bovine anterior pituitary by ammonium sulfate fractionation, ion exchange chromatography on DEAE-cellulose, and gel filtration. This enzyme of 76,000 molecular weight (as estimated by gel filtration) exhibits maximal activity at neutral pH (optimum pH 7.4 to 7.6) in buffers of high ionic strength supplemented with thiol-protecting agents. As indicated by the strong inhibition of the enzymatic activity by N-ethylmaleimide and Hg2+, as well as by the extreme sensitivity toward diisopropyl fluorophosphate, -SH, and -OH residues apparently represent essential functional groups of the enzyme. The stereospecific deamidation of TRF (Km = 4.1 . 10(-4) M) is inhibited competitively by TRF analogues which contain proline or by the proline containing biologically active peptides luliberin (LH-RF), oxytocin, vasopressin, angiotensin II, and Substance P. TRF analogues without proline or peptide amides without proline are ineffective. This enzyme cleaves the appropriate Pro-X bonds in luliberin, angiotensin II, pyroGlu-His-Pro-Gly-NH2, and the collagenase substrate Z-Gly-Pro-Leu-Gly-Pro. Cranberry and blueberry are closely related and recently domesticated fruit crops in the genus Vaccinium. Both have a presumed American origin and likely evolved from a common ancestor; however, details of their adaptive radiation and the extent of their genomic divergence remains little understood. To better understand their evolutionary and genomic relationships, a set of 323 cross-transferable simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers were identified, added to existing marker datasets, and used to construct linkage maps for cranberry (582 SSRs) and an interspecific diploid blueberry population (V. darrowii x V. corymbosum) x V. corymbosum (409 markers, densest blueberry SSR map currently available). The maps allowed for the first comparative genetic mapping study in Vaccinium, and revealed a surprisingly high degree of macro-synteny and collinearity between the cranberry and blueberry genomes. Approximately 93% of the blueberry linkage map was collinear with cranberry, while the remaining 7% (66.3 cM) was spread across 15 non-collinear regions detected in eight of the 12 linkage groups. These observations suggest that large-scale genome differentiation between the cranberry and blueberry genomes has not occurred during their evolution, and that sequence information will be highly transferable between the species in future genetic research and breeding. Finally, the set of 323 cross-transferable SSRs and linkage maps they were used to construct can serve as a shared resource for the Vaccinium research community, enabling additional comparative mapping studies, the identification and transfer of quantitative trait loci and candidate genes between species, and future exploration of evolutionary relationships in Vaccinium. 相似文献

Many neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric diseases and other brain disorders are accompanied by impairments in high-level cognitive functions including memory, attention, motivation, and decision-making. Despite several decades of extensive research, neuroscience is little closer to discovering new treatments. Key impediments include the absence of validated and robust cognitive assessment tools for facilitating translation from animal models to humans. In this review, we describe a state-of-the-art platform poised to overcome these impediments and improve the success of translational research, the Mouse Translational Research Accelerator Platform (MouseTRAP), which is centered on the touchscreen cognitive testing system for rodents. It integrates touchscreen-based tests of high-level cognitive assessment with state-of-the art neurotechnology to record and manipulate molecular and circuit level activity in vivo in animal models during human-relevant cognitive performance. The platform also is integrated with two Open Science platforms designed to facilitate knowledge and data-sharing practices within the rodent touchscreen community, touchscreencognition.org and mousebytes.ca. Touchscreencognition.org includes the Wall, showcasing touchscreen news and publications, the Forum, for community discussion, and Training, which includes courses, videos, SOPs, and symposia. To get started, interested researchers simply create user accounts. We describe the origins of the touchscreen testing system, the novel lines of research it has facilitated, and its increasingly widespread use in translational research, which is attributable in part to knowledge-sharing efforts over the past decade. We then identify the unique features of MouseTRAP that stand to potentially revolutionize translational research, and describe new initiatives to partner with similar platforms such as McGill's M3 platform (m3platform.org). 相似文献
