Summary This paper attempts to verify the importance of spatial positioning of the eyes of reef heronsEgretta gularis schistacea, when coping with light refraction at the air-water interface. The herons' striking of prey, while their approach angle was restricted, was observed. (a) The herons' capture success in the restricted situation was markedly lower than in the unrestricted situation. (b) The points of strike (STR) in unsuccessful strikes differed from those of successful strikes, and from those of the unrestricted situation. (c) The larger the difference between the observed and the predicted ratio of prey depth to apparent prey depth, the higher the probability of missing a prey. These results support predictions of a model presented elsewhere (Katzir and Intrator 1987) that a heron will attempt to reach spatial positions at which prey's real depth and apparent depth are linearly correlated.  相似文献

The tiny seeds of parasitic weeds of the genusOrobanche can be identified by using RAPD markers. A simple procedure for DNA extraction from single seeds, 10 μg each, followed by RAPD-PCR and using specific DNA markers, leads to species identification. Summary Analysis of phage infection of the host mutant ER437 by SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and autoradiography has revealed altered expression of repressor and integration function (Int). We show that in this host Int as well as repressor synthesis is not dependent upon the cIII gene product in the usual manner, nor is their synthesis turned off in the normal way.  相似文献

Field experiments were conducted to demonstrate species recognition in Dascyllus aruanus. Aggression was used as a criterion for recognition. Free-living fish were presented with live stimuli in a choice situation where visual cues could be isolated from other cues. The stimuli were conspecific and heterospecific fish. Practically all the responses were aggressive. Aggression towards D. aruanus and Dascyllus marginatus was similar in its intensity, and higher than towards Dascyllus trimaculatus. Aggression towards Amphiprion bicinctus was negligible. Elimination of all but visual cues resulted in a decline in attack rate without changing attack preference. The high level of interspecific aggression limits the use of aggression as an indicator of species recognition under the presented experimental situation.  相似文献

The availability of sequence information for many plants has opened the way to advanced genetic analysis in many non-model plants. Nevertheless, exploration of genetic variation on a large scale and its use as a tool for the identification of traits of interest are still rare. In this study, we combined a bulk segregation approach with our own-designed microarrays to map the pH locus that influences fruit pH in melon. Using these technologies, we identified a set of markers that are genetically linked to the pH trait. Further analysis using a set of melon cultivars demonstrated that some of these markers are tightly linked to the pH trait throughout our germplasm collection. These results validate the utility of combining microarray technology with a bulk segregation approach in mapping traits of interest in non-model plants.  相似文献

The main point of our hypothesis "coloration undermines camouflage" is that many color patterns in plants undermine the camouflage of invertebrate herbivores, especially insects, thus exposing them to predation and causing them to avoid plant organs with unsuitable coloration, to the benefit of the plants. This is a common case of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" and a visual parallel of the chemical signals that plants emit to call wasps when attacked by caterpillars. Moreover, this is also a common natural version of the well-known case of industrial melanism, which illustrates the great importance of plant-based camouflage for herbivorous insects and can serve as an independent test for our hypothesis. We claim that the enormous variations in coloration of leaves, petioles and stems as well as of flowers and fruits undermine the camouflage of invertebrate herbivores, especially insects. We assume that the same principle might operate in certain animal-parasite interactions. Our hypothesis, however, does not contrast or exclude other previous or future explanations of specific types of plant coloration. Traits such as coloration that have more than one type of benefit may be selected for by several agents and evolve more rapidly than ones with a single type of advantage.  相似文献

Plants in the genus Cucumis (cucumber and melon) have the largest mitochondrial genomes known among all plants, due in part to the accumulation of repetitive DNAs of varying complexities. Recombination among these repetitive DNAs should produce highly rearranged mitochondrial genomes relative to the smaller mitochondrial genomes of related plants. We cloned and sequenced mitochondrial genomic regions near the rRNA, atp9 and cob genes from cucumber, melon, squash and watermelon (all members of the Cucurbitaceae family), and compared to the previously sequenced mitochondrial genomes of Arabidopsis thaliana and sugar beet to study the distribution and arrangement of coding and repetitive DNAs. Cucumber and melon had regions of concentrated repetitive DNAs spread throughout the sequenced regions; few repetitive DNAs were revealed in the mitochondrial genomes of A. thaliana, sugar beet, squash and watermelon. Recombination among these repetitive DNAs most likely produced unique arrangements of the rrn18 and rrn5 genes in the genus Cucumis. Cucumber mitochondrial DNA had more pockets of dispersed direct and inverted repeats than melon and the other plants, and we did not reveal repetitive sequences significantly contributing to mitochondrial genome expansion in both cucumber and melon.Disclaimer. A genetic map of melon enriched for fruit traits was constructed, using a recombinant inbred (RI) population developed from a cross between representatives of the two subspecies of Cucumis melo L.: PI 414723 (subspecies agrestis) and ‘Dulce’ (subspecies melo). Phenotyping of 99 RI lines was conducted over three seasons in two locations in Israel and the US. The map includes 668 DNA markers (386 SSRs, 76 SNPs, six INDELs and 200 AFLPs), of which 160 were newly developed from fruit ESTs. These ESTs include candidate genes encoding for enzymes of sugar and carotenoid metabolic pathways that were cloned from melon cDNA or identified through mining of the International Cucurbit Genomics Initiative database (http://www.icugi.org/). The map covers 1,222 cM with an average of 2.672 cM between markers. In addition, a skeleton physical map was initiated and 29 melon BACs harboring fruit ESTs were localized to the 12 linkage groups of the map. Altogether, 44 fruit QTLs were identified: 25 confirming QTLs described using other populations and 19 newly described QTLs. The map includes QTLs for fruit sugar content, particularly sucrose, the major sugar affecting sweetness in melon fruit. Six QTLs interacting in an additive manner account for nearly all the difference in sugar content between the two genotypes. Three QTLs for fruit flesh color and carotenoid content were identified. Interestingly, no clear colocalization of QTLs for either sugar or carotenoid content was observed with over 40 genes encoding for enzymes involved in their metabolism. The RI population described here provides a useful resource for further genomics and metabolomics studies in melon, as well as useful markers for breeding for fruit quality.  相似文献

The bacterial symbiont Cardinium (Bacteroidetes) was previously implicated in the thelytokous reproduction of the parasitoid Plagiomerus diaspidis Crawford (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae). Horizontal transmission of the symbiont among the cactus scale Diaspis echinocacti Bouché (Homoptera: Diaspididae) and its hymenopteran parasitoids has been suggested. In this study, the bacteria associated with D. echinocacti, its parasitoids P. diaspidis and Aphytis sp. (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae), and the hyperparasitoid Marietta leopardina Motschulsky (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) were characterized using molecular fingerprinting techniques, and the localization of Cardinium in P. diaspidis was studied using fluorescence in situ hybridizations (FISH). Cardinium was the only bacterium found in P. diaspidis, but it could not be detected in any of the other insects tested. The symbiont was specifically located in the reproductive tissues of its P. diaspidis host.  相似文献
