In comparison with other bathydraconids, all species of the genus Bathydraco are poorly known from an ecological perspective. The diet of juvenile Bathydraco marri Norman, 1938 was studied for the first time in specimens collected in the southwestern Ross Sea during summer 1998. Fish were collected in a single otter trawl catch at 330–340 m depth. The stomach content analysis showed that this species fed exclusively on crustaceans. Overall, 20 prey taxa were identified to genus or species level. Mysids, amphipods and copepods were the most important prey in decreasing order of importance. Other prey, such as Euphausia superba, isopods and tanaids were eaten occasionally and in very small amounts. A multivariate analysis was applied to feeding data to assess ontogenetic or sex-related changes in diet. No difference was detected between sexes, whereas diet of small and large fish differed in some degree. An ontogenetic shift from small and pelagic crustaceans such as copepods to benthic–benthopelagic prey such as amphipods and mysids was observed. Relating present results with published data on physiological characteristics of B. marri, it was possible to infer their feeding behaviour and mode of life. Like other bathydraconids, this species appeared to be an inactive and sluggish fish, which relied on more or less motile benthic or epibenthic prey adopting a “sit and wait” feeding strategy. On the other hand, smaller fish seem to be more active, feeding also on pelagic prey such as copepods that can be seasonally abundant, thus reducing the intraspecific competition for food.  相似文献

Traditionally, marine ecosystem structure was thought to be bottom‐up controlled. In recent years, a number of studies have highlighted the importance of top‐down regulation. Evidence is accumulating that the type of trophic forcing varies temporally and spatially, and an integrated view – considering the interplay of both types of control – is emerging. Correlations between time series spanning several decades of the abundances of adjacent trophic levels are conventionally used to assess the type of control: bottom‐up if positive or top‐down if this is negative. This approach implies averaging periods which might show time‐varying dynamics and therefore can hide part of this temporal variability. Using spatially referenced plankton information extracted from the Continuous Plankton Recorder, this study addresses the potential dynamic character of the trophic structure at the planktonic level in the North Sea by assessing its variation over both temporal and spatial scales. Our results show that until the early‐1970s a bottom‐up control characterized the base of the food web across the whole North Sea, with diatoms having a positive and homogeneous effect on zooplankton filter‐feeders. Afterwards, different regional trophic dynamics were observed, in particular a negative relationship between total phytoplankton and zooplankton was detected off the west coast of Norway and the Skagerrak as opposed to a positive one in the southern reaches. Our results suggest that after the early 1970s diatoms remained the main food source for zooplankton filter‐feeders east of Orkney–Shetland and off Scotland, while in the east, from the Norwegian Trench to the German Bight, filter‐feeders were mainly sustained by dinoflagellates.  相似文献

Mesozooplankton biomass and abundance were evaluated in epipelagic waters at 59 stations covering the Italian sector of the Ligurian Sea (north-western Mediterranean) in December 1990. This region is characterised by a cyclonic circulation which encloses a central divergence zone and is associated with a main thermohaline front offshore the western Ligurian coast. At the end of autumn, mesozooplankton biomass (range: 0.80–4.24 mg DW m−3) and the abundance (range: 83.8–932 ind. m−3) were lower in the divergence zone. On the contrary, in the Ligurian frontal zone at the periphery of the divergence and on the eastern continental shelf the greatest values of biomass and abundance were recorded. Copepods and appendicularians dominated the mesozooplankton community, the main taxa being the copepods Clausocalanus spp. (46% of total zooplankton) and Oithona spp. (15%) and the appendicularian Fritillaria spp. (12%). Three hydrological sub-regions, i.e. the divergence, the eastern continental shelf and the periphery of the divergence, were characterised by different zooplankton communities and characteristic species. Environmental differences between the three zones were mainly related to changes in bottom topography, sea surface temperatures and quantity of particulate organic matter. Vertical mesozooplankton abundance and taxa distribution from the surface to 1,900 m depth were also examined in one station. The results showed that the bulk of the community was concentrated in the upper 200 m, small copepods being dominant particularly in the upper 50 m. The copepod community was more diversified in sub-superficial waters, with a maximum observed in the 200–400 m layer. The distributions of main zooplankton taxa described in epipelagic waters in the eastern Ligurian Sea in autumn were compared with their distribution at surface in the north-western Mediterranean obtained by sampling performed with the Continuous Plankton Recorder in 1997–1999. The analysis of the zooplankton community in CPR samples confirms the dominance of small copepods (Paracalanus spp., Clausocalanus spp., Oithona spp.) and appendicularians in the north-western Mediterranean in late autumn-winter and shows that their distribution is mainly related to the main mesoscale hydrographic features characterising this basin. The Mediterranean Sea is located in a crossroad of mid-latitude and subtropical climatic modes that enhance contrasting environmental conditions over both latitudinal and longitudinal ranges. Here, we show that the large-scale environmental forcing is reflected in the basin scale trends of the adult population of the calanoid copepod Centropages typicus. The species is distributed over the whole Mediterranean basin, and maximal abundances were found in the north-western basin associated to oceanic fronts, and in the Adriatic Sea associated to shallow and semi enclosed waters. The peak of main abundances of C. typicus correlates with the latitudinal temperature gradient and the highest seasonal abundances occurred in spring within the 14–18°C temperature window. Such thermal cline may define the latitudinal geographic region where C. typicus seasonally dominates the >200 μm-sized spring copepod community in the Mediterranean Sea. The approach used here is generally applicable to investigate the large-scale spatial patterns of other planktonic organisms and to identify favourable environmental windows for population development.  相似文献

Year-to-year variations in abundance and composition of zooplanktonwere studied in the Ligurian Sea at a station sampled two timesa month between 1985 and 1995. As a break of 2 years (April1989–December 1990) occurred in the time series, the STATISmethod was chosen instead of time series analysis. Each of thenine sampled years was a single table of monthly or seasonalaverage densities of 26 plankton taxa. STATIS allowed (i) estimationof similarity between each yearly table, (ii) visualizationof the trajectories of both species and observations (seasons)from one year to another, and (iii) associations of particularspecies, which showed similar temporal variations, to be determined.A strong seasonal variation was evident for most species, andyears 1987, 1992 and 1994 were different from the others. Trajectoriesindicated which species were stable and which were characterizedby small or large fluctuations during the nine years. Five differenttaxa associations were detected. For each association, the mostrepresentative period was identified, where each period wasa group of months obtained by clustering on species abundances.Taking into account hydro-climatic factors in the representativeperiods, a contingency discriminant analysis allowed us to identifyand characterize the most discriminant environmental parametersassociated with each group of species. Environmental factorsthat best discriminated the different representative periodswere atmospheric pressure, current speed and direction, andwater temperature.  相似文献

Cycloaddition reactions with α,β-unsaturated carbene complexes of the Fischer-type bearing the carbene carbon atom and the double bond incorporated in the same ring are described. Pentacarbonyl(2H-benzopyran-2- ylidene)chromium(0) complexes (2a-c) and pentacarbonyl(4-methoxy-3,3-dimethyl-2-oxacyclopentylidene)- chromium(0) (3) show a rather low reactivity towards 1,3-dipoles and 1,3-dienes. The reactions with diazomethane are regioselective but not chemoselective; compounds 2 and 3 show two sites of attack: the α,β carbon-carbon and the carbon-metal double bond. The crystal and molecular structures of 2a and 3 have been elucidated by single crystal X-ray analysis. Crystals of 2a are monoclinic, space group P21/c, a=7.614(3), b=14.033(3), c=12.766(3) Å, β=95.24°, V=1358.3(7) Å Z=4; crystals of 3 are triclinic, space group P , a=6.553(1), b=9.408(1), c=10.620(1) Å α=92.70(1), β=92.30(1), γ=92.12(1)°, V=653.0(1), Å3, Z=2. Final agreement indices for 2a and 3 are R=0.034 and 0.033, respectively. Vibrational properties of the Cr(CO)5 moiety were interpreted by FT-IR and FT-Raman spectroscopy. Electronic spectra and π electron distribution were interpreted by resonance Raman spectroscopy.  相似文献

Climate change and environmental issues compel us to find alternatives to the production of molecules of interest from petrochemistry. This study aims at understanding the production of butyrate, hydrogen, and CO2 from the oxidation of lactate with acetate in Clostridium tyrobutyricum and thus proposes an alternative carbon source to glucose. This specie is known to produce more butyrate than the other butyrate-producing clostridia species due to a lack of solvent genesis phase. The recent discoveries on flavin-based electron bifurcation and confurcation mechanism as a mode of energy conservation led us to suggest a new metabolic scheme for the formation of butyrate from lactate-acetate co-metabolism. While searching for genes encoding for EtfAB complexes and neighboring genes in the genome of C. tyrobutyricum, we identified a cluster of genes involved in butyrate formation and another cluster involved in lactate oxidation homologous to Acetobacterium woodii. A phylogenetic approach encompassing other butyrate-producing and/or lactate-oxidizing species based on EtfAB complexes confirmed these results. A metabolic scheme on the production of butyrate, hydrogen, and CO2 from the lactate-acetate co-metabolism in C. tyrobutyricum was constructed and then confirmed with data of steady-state continuous culture. This in silico metabolic carbon flux analysis model showed the coherence of the scheme from the carbon recovery, the cofactor ratio, and the ATP yield. This study improves our understanding of the lactate oxidation metabolic pathways and the role of acetate and intracellular redox balance, and paves the way for the production of molecules of interest as butyrate and hydrogen with C. tyrobutyricum.

Spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA) 3, the most common form of SCA, is a neurodegenerative rare disease characterized by polyglutamine tract expansion and self-assembly of Ataxin3 (At3) misfolded proteins into highly organized fibrillar aggregates. The At3 N-terminal Josephin Domain (JD) has been suggested as being responsible for mediating the initial phase of the At3 double-step fibrillogenesis. Several issues concerning the residues involved in the JD’s aggregation and, more generally, the JD clumping mechanism have not been clarified yet. In this paper we present an investigation focusing on the JD protein-protein interaction by means of molecular modeling. Our results suggest possible aminoacids involved in JD contact together with local and non-local effects following JD dimerization. Surprisingly, JD conformational changes following the binding may involve ubiquitin binding sites and hairpin region even though they do not pertain to the JD interaction surfaces. Moreover, the JD binding event has been found to alter the hairpin open-like conformation toward a closed-like arrangement over the simulated timescale. Finally, our results suggest that the JD aggregation might be a multi-step process, with an initial fast JD-JD binding mainly driven by Arg101, followed by slower structural global rearrangements involving the exposure to the solvent of Leu84-Trp87, which might play a role in a second step of JD aggregation.  相似文献

A long-term time series of plankton records collected by the continuous plankton recorder (CPR) Survey in the northeast Atlantic indicates an increased occurrence of Cnidaria since 2002. In the years 2007 and 2008, outbreaks of the warm-temperate scyphomedusa, Pelagia noctiluca, appeared in CPR samples between 45° N to 58° N and 1° W to 26° W. Knowing the biology of this species and its occurrence in the adjacent Mediterranean Sea, we suggest that P. noctiluca may be exploiting recent hydroclimatic changes in the northeast Atlantic to increase its extent and intensity of outbreaks. In pelagic ecosystems, Cnidaria can affect fish recruitment negatively. Since P. noctiluca is a highly venomous species, outbreaks can also be detrimental to aquaculture and make bathing waters unusable, thus having profound ecological and socio-economic consequences.  相似文献

Statistical species distribution models (SDMs) are increasingly used to project spatial relocations of marine taxa under future climate change scenarios. However, tests of their predictive skill in the real‐world are rare. Here, we use data from the Continuous Plankton Recorder program, one of the longest running and most extensive marine biological monitoring programs, to investigate the reliability of predicted plankton distributions. We apply three commonly used SDMs to 20 representative plankton species, including copepods, diatoms, and dinoflagellates, all found in the North Atlantic and adjacent seas. We fit the models to decadal subsets of the full (1958–2012) dataset, and then use them to predict both forward and backward in time, comparing the model predictions against the corresponding observations. The probability of correctly predicting presence was low, peaking at 0.5 for copepods, and model skill typically did not outperform a null model assuming distributions to be constant in time. The predicted prevalence increasingly differed from the observed prevalence for predictions with more distance in time from their training dataset. More detailed investigations based on four focal species revealed that strong spatial variations in skill exist, with the least skill at the edges of the distributions, where prevalence is lowest. Furthermore, the scores of traditional single‐value model performance metrics were contrasting and some implied overoptimistic conclusions about model skill. Plankton may be particularly challenging to model, due to its short life span and the dispersive effects of constant water movements on all spatial scales, however there are few other studies against which to compare these results. We conclude that rigorous model validation, including comparison against null models, is essential to assess the robustness of projections of marine planktonic species under climate change.  相似文献
