Darwin was a teleologist

It is often claimed that one of Darwin's chief accomplishments was to provide biology with a non-teleological explanation of adaptation. A number of Darwin's closest associates, however, and Darwin himself, did not see it that way. In order to assess whether Darwin's version of evolutionary theory does or does not employ teleological explanation, two of his botanical studies are examined. The result of this examination is that Darwin sees selection explanations of adaptations as teleological explanations. The confusion in the nineteenth century about Darwin's attitude to teleology is argued to be a result of Darwin's teleological explanations not conforming to either of the dominant philosophical justifications of teleology at that time. Darwin's explanatory practices conform well, however, to recent defenses of the teleological character of selection explanations.I would like to thank John Beatty, David Hull and one of this journal's readers for constructive comments on an earlier draft of this paper.     

Seed transmission of turnip yellow mosaic virus in winter turnip and winter oilseed rapes

This is the first record of seed transmission of turnip yellow mosaic virus (TYMV) in oilseed and turnip rapes. The seed transmission of TYMV in a naturally infected winter turnip rape (Brassica napus var. silvestris) cultivar Perko PVH was investigated. By ELISA 1.6%, 3.2% and 8.3% seed transmission of the virus was found in seed of plants from three localities. The proportion of infected seeds produced by artificially infected plants of winter oilseed rape (Brassica napus ssp. oleifera) and winter turnip rape cultivars was determined. The virus transmission rate, expressed as the proportion of virus-infected plants which germinated from the seed was for the oilseed rape cvs Jet Neuf 0.1%, Solida 0.4%, Silesia 0.8%, Darmor 1.2%, SL-507 0.2%, SL-509 0.0% and for the winter turnip rape cv. Perko 1.5%. ELISA cannot be used in direct tests on bulk seed lots to estimate proportion of infected seed, but must be used on germinated seedlings.     

Nitrogenase — hydrogenase relationships in Rhizobium japonicum

The conditions necessary for coordinate derepression of nitrogenase and O₂-dependent hydrogenase activities in free-living cultures of Rhizobium japonicum were studied. Carbon sources were screened for their ability to support nitrogenase, and then hydrogenase activities. There was a positive correlation between the level of nitrogenase and corresponding hydrogenase activities among the various carbon substrates. The carbon substrate -ketoglutarate was able to support the highest levels of both nitrogenase and hydrogenase activities. When cells were incubated in -ketoglutarate-containing medium, without added H₂ but in the presence of acetylene (to block H₂ evolution from nitrogenase) significant hydrogenase activity was still observed. Complete inhibition of nitrogenase-dependent H₂ evolution by acetylene was verified by the use of a Hup^- mutant. Hydrogen is therefore not required to induce hydrogenase. The presence of 10% acetylene inhibited derepression of hydrogenase. Constitutive (Hup^c) mutants were isolated which contained up to 9 times the level of hydrogenase acitivity than the wild type in nitrogenase induction medium. Aspects of hadrosaurian cranial anatomy

Supraorbital bones in Saurolophus angustirostris are described, and their presence in all hadrosaurs is suggested. Frontal-nasal and premaxillar-nasal fontanellae are distinguished in hadrosaurs; their presence is explained as connected with growth and considered to he responsible for the variability of crest structures. New data indicating the presence of a cartilaginous diverticulum nasi within the circumnarial depression in Saurobphus ongustirostris are presented. A physiological (respiratory and/or thermoregulatory) function of the nasal diverticulum is proposed.     

Nephroblastoma in infants, 1969-75: variations in treatment and survival.

In a series of 79 infants aged under 1 year with nephroblastoma diagnosed during 1969-75 all the patients underwent nephrectomy, 33 (42%) received a course of radiotherapy, and 49 (62%) received chemotherapy. The overall three-year survival rate for patients who survived at least one week after diagnosis was 65%. The corresponding rate for infants with stage I tumours was 76%. The survival rate in children with early-stage tumours was significantly higher in those who were treated by nephrectomy and chemotherapy alone compared with those who also received radiotherapy. In a large proportion of cases nephrectomy and chemotherapy together constituted sufficient treatment for the cure of infants with nephroblastoma, and in some instances nephrectomy alone proved adequate. There was no general tendency for children under 1 year old to be unable to withstand chemotherapy.     

The relation of acyl transfer to the overall reaction of thiolase I from porcine heart

Thiolase I (long chain 3-ketoacyl-CoA-specific) from porcine heart has been characterized kinetically. In the direction of acetoacetyl-CoA cleavage, a variety of thiols including CoASH show the same Vmax at saturating concentrations of acetoacetyl-CoA. At a constant overall velocity of acetoacetyl-CoA disappearance, one of the two acetyl groups from acetoacetyl-CoA will partition between CoASH and 2-mercaptoethanol at increasing 2-mercaptoethanol concentrations. These observations suggest rate-determining formation of an acetyl enzyme intermediate in the direction of acetoacetyl-CoA cleavage. In the direction of acetoacetyl-CoA formation from two molecules of acetyl-CoA, the Vmax of acetoacetyl-CoA formation is identical with the Vmax for an acetyl-CoA in equilibrium CoA isotope exchange reaction and the Vmax for an enzyme-catalyzed acetyl transfer reaction between acetyl-CoA and 2-mercaptoethanol. This suggests that in the direction of acetoacetyl-CoA synthesis, the acetyl transfer half-reaction is rate-limiting. The acetyl intermediate has been isolated and characterized. The equilibrium constant for acetyl enzyme formation from acetyl-CoA and free enzyme is 1 +/- 0.5 X 10(-2). The rate constant for spontaneous hydrolysis of the acetyl enzyme (2.6 X 10(-4) s-1) is a factor of 400 faster than the rate constant for acetyl-CoA hydrolysis under comparable conditions. The acetyl enzyme is thermodynamically and kinetically destabilized compared to acetyl-CoA.     

苯肼对红细胞在体衰老过程中微观流变特性的影响

在Brunara等人用苯肼使动物造成急性溶血性贫血的方法基础上,建立一种由急性溶血性贫血后,而诱发家兔幼红细胞增多的非正常生理状态的红细胞在体衰老模型,继而研究新生红细胞从产生到死亡死亡过程,即衰老过程的流变学特性的变化规律。通过对新生红细胞的压积、变形、取向及与之相应的全血的粘度、血沉等指标的连续60多天的监测,发现红细胞在衰老过程中的微观流变学特性确实有明显改变。红细胞在体衰老过程中微观流变特性逐渐变差。     

华西银腊梅挥发油化学成分的研究

用水蒸气蒸馏法提取华西银腊梅挥发油,并用气相色谱-质谱(GC-MS)联用技术对其挥发油的化学成分进行分析,结果共鉴定了其中的39种成分,所鉴定成分含量约占总检出量的87.83%。其化学成分主要为(Z,Z)-9,12-十八碳二烯酸甲酯(9.00%),壬醛(5.83%),二十一烷(5.69%),二十烷(5.08%),辛炔酸(4.50%),2,6,10,15-四甲基十七烷(3.93%),(Z)-6-十八烯酸甲酯(3.65%),3,8-二甲基十一烷(3.52%),1-十六碳炔(3.31%),肉豆蔻酸(2.86%),月桂醛(2.81%),壬酸(2.23%),5,6,7,7α-四氢-4,4,7α三甲基-2(4H)-苯并呋喃酮(2.18%)等。
