The Atacama Desert is the driest non‐polar desert on Earth, presenting precarious conditions for biological activity. In the arid coastal belt, life is restricted to areas with fog events that cause almost daily wet–dry cycles. In such an area, we discovered a hitherto unknown and unique ground covering biocenosis dominated by lichens, fungi, and algae attached to grit‐sized (~6 mm) quartz and granitoid stones. Comparable biocenosis forming a kind of a layer on top of soil and rock surfaces in general is summarized as cryptogamic ground covers (CGC) in literature. In contrast to known CGC from arid environments to which frequent cyclic wetting events are lethal, in the Atacama Desert every fog event is answered by photosynthetic activity of the soil community and thus considered as the desert's breath. Photosynthesis of the new CGC type is activated by the lowest amount of water known for such a community worldwide thus enabling the unique biocenosis to fulfill a variety of ecosystem services. In a considerable portion of the coastal Atacama Desert, it protects the soil from sporadically occurring splash erosion and contributes to the accumulation of soil carbon and nitrogen as well as soil formation through bio‐weathering. The structure and function of the new CGC type are discussed, and we suggest the name grit–crust. We conclude that this type of CGC can be expected in all non‐polar fog deserts of the world and may resemble the cryptogam communities that shaped ancient Earth. In the Atacama Desert, cyanobacteria grow on various substrates such as soils (edaphic) and quartz or granitoid stones (lithic). Both edaphic and lithic cyanobacterial communities have been described but no comparison between both communities of the same locality has yet been undertaken. In the present study, we compared both cyanobacterial communities along a precipitation gradient ranging from the arid National Park Pan de Azúcar (PA), which resembles a large fog oasis in the Atacama Desert extending to the semiarid Santa Gracia Natural Reserve (SG) further south, as well as along a precipitation gradient within PA. Various microscopic techniques, as well as culturing and partial 16S rRNA sequencing, were applied to identify 21 cyanobacterial species; the diversity was found to decline as precipitation levels decreased. Additionally, under increasing xeric stress, lithic community species composition showed higher divergence from the surrounding edaphic community, resulting in indigenous hypolithic and chasmoendolithic cyanobacterial communities. We conclude that rain and fog water, respectively, cause contrasting trends regarding cyanobacterial species richness in the edaphic and lithic microhabitats. 相似文献

Biodegradation of organic matter is required to reduce the potential of municipal solid waste for producing gaseous emissions and leaching contaminants. Therefore, we studied leachates of an aerobic-treated waste from municipal solids and a sewage sludge mixture that were re-circulated to decrease the concentration of biodegradable organic matter in laboratory-scale reactors. After 12 months, the total organic C and biological and chemical oxygen demands were reduced, indicating the biodegradation of organic compounds in the leachates. Curie-point pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) and pyrolysis-field ionization mass spectrometry (Py-FIMS) revealed that phenols, alkylaromatic compounds, N-containing compounds and carbohydrates were the predominate compounds in the leachates and solid waste. Leachate re-circulation led to a higher thermal stability of the residual organic matter as indicated by temperature-resolved Py-FIMS. Admixture of sewage sludge to solid waste was less effective in removing organic compounds from the leachates. It resulted in drastic higher and more bio-resistant loads of organic matter in the leachates and revealed increased proportions of alkylaromatic compounds. The biodegradation of organic matter in leachates, re-circulated through municipal solid waste, offers the potential for improved aerobic waste treatments and should be investigated on a larger scale. 相似文献

This report compares cellular localization of fesselin in chicken smooth, skeletal and cardiac muscle tissues using affinity
purified polyclonal fesselin antibodies. Western blot analyses revealed large amounts of fesselin in gizzard smooth muscle
with lower amounts in skeletal and cardiac muscle. In gizzard, fesselin was detected by immunofluorescence as discrete cytoplasmic
structures. Fesselin did not co-localize with talin, vinculin or caveolin indicating that fesselin is not associated with
dense plaques or caveolar regions of the cell membrane. Immunoelectron microscopy established localization of fesselin within
dense bodies. Since dense bodies function as anchorage points for actin and desmin in smooth muscle cells, fesselin may be
involved in establishing cytoskeletal structure in this tissue. In skeletal muscle, fesselin was associated with desmin in
regularly spaced bands distributed along the length of muscle fibers suggesting localization to the Z-line. Infrequently,
this banding pattern was observed in heart tissue as well. Localization at the Z-line of skeletal and cardiac muscle suggests

The aim was to investigate how short rotation coppice (SRC) on arable soil in Northern Germany altered the concentrations of soil lipids, and thus, soil organic matter (SOM) quality. The concentrations of organic C and aliphatic lipids were determined in the litter and underlying soil layers under two willow (Salix caprea × viminalis clone 6, S. viminalis clone 78–183) and two poplar (Populus trichocarpa × deltoides cv. Beaupré, P. nigra × maximowiczii cv. Max 4) clones at a 14-year-old SRC and a permanent arable reference site. High organic C concentrations in the topsoil under S. viminalis and P. trichocarpa × deltoides agreed with high concentrations of long C-chain saturated n-alkanoic acids, n-alkanols and n-alkanes. These disproportionally higher concentrations of long C-chain saturated n-alkanoic acids (factor 3.6) and n-alkanols (factor 3.8) under S. viminalis and of n-alkanols (factor 3.9) under P. trichocarpa × deltoides than in an arable reference treatment indicated a lower microbial decomposability and, thus, a clone-specific accumulation of these SOM constituents. The clone-specific enrichments in long C-chain saturated n-alkanoic acids, n-alkanols and n-alkanes indicate that clone selection may be an approach to additional long-term storage of atmosphere CO2 in the form of stable SOM under SRC. 相似文献
