The maintenance of soil organic matter (SOM) and the balancing of nutrient flows into and out of the rainfed rice cropping systems in Northeast Thailand is of paramount importance to arresting the decline in soil fertility and crop yields. A system where small applications of leaf litters from locally grown trees are applied annually to rice paddy soils prior to transplanting is described. The annual application of 1500 kg/ha of Cajanus cajan, Acacia auriculiformis, Phyllanthus taxodifolius and Samanea saman for five seasons resulted in increases in rice grain yield of 48, 35, 32 and 23% above the no-leaf litter control, respectively. Average annual nutrient inputs from the leaf litters, in kg/ha, ranged from 62.7 N, 3.9 P, 17.9 K, and 3.5 S for Cajanus cajan to 24.5 N, 1.5 P, 8.1 K and 2.0 S for Acacia auriculiformis. Nutrient balances, determined by the difference between the inputs (fertiliser and added leaf litters) and outputs (grain and straw) indicated net positive N and P balances of up to 457 and 60 kg/ha. respectively, after five seasons of leaf litter applications. Sulfur and potassium balances resulted in net deficits of up to −3 and −52 kg S and K/ha, respectively, where no leaf litter was applied and rice straw was removed following harvest. Calculated apparent nutrient recoveries reflected the decomposition rate of the added residues and were highest for P and K, reflecting their higher soil residual value than mobile nutrients such as N and S. Sustainable farming systems will require that crop yields are stable through the maintenance of soil fertility and the balance of nutrients in the system. Identifying land-use drivers of changes in river condition is complicated by spatial scale, geomorphological context, land management, and correlations among responding variables such as nutrients and sediments. Furthermore, variations in standard metrics, such as substratum composition, do not necessarily relate causally to ecological impacts. Consequently, the absence of a significant relationship between a hypothesised driver and a dependent variable does not necessarily indicate the absence of a causal relationship. We conducted a gradient survey to identify impacts of catchment-scale grazing by domestic livestock on river macroinvertebrate communities. A standard correlative approach showed that community structure was strongly related to the upstream catchment area under grazing. We then used data from a stream mesocosm experiment that independently quantified the impacts of nutrients and fine sediments on macroinvertebrate communities to train artificial neural networks (ANNs) to assess the relative influence of nutrients and fine sediments on the survey sites from their community composition. The ANNs developed to predict nutrient impacts did not find a relationship between nutrients and catchment area under grazing, suggesting that nutrients were not an important factor mediating grazing impacts on community composition, or that these ANNs had no generality or insufficient power at the landscape-scale. In contrast, ANNs trained to predict the impacts of fine sediments indicated a significant relationship between fine sediments and catchment area under grazing. Macroinvertebrate communities at sites with a high proportion of land under grazing were thus more similar to those resulting from high fine sediments in a mesocosm experiment than to those resulting from high nutrients. Our study confirms that 1) fine sediment is an important mediator of land-use impacts on river macroinvertebrate communities, 2) ANNs can successfully identify subtle effects and separate the effects of correlated variables, and 3) data from small-scale experiments can generate relationships that help explain landscape-scale patterns.  相似文献

Ecological restoration activities should be conceptualized as a form of governance, as this lens best captures the multiactor, collaborative processes by which societies through governments and nonstate entities seek to achieve environmental outcomes. Successful restoration governance depends on addressing a cluster of challenges concerning optimal spatiotemporal scales, biological feasibility, sociocultural acceptability, financial viability, and institutional tractability. Choice of variables, climate models and emissions scenarios all influence the results of species distribution models under future climatic conditions. However, an overview of applied studies suggests that the uncertainty associated with these factors is not always appropriately incorporated or even considered. We examine the effects of choice of variables, climate models and emissions scenarios can have on future species distribution models using two endangered species: one a short-lived invertebrate species (Ptunarra Brown Butterfly), and the other a long-lived paleo-endemic tree species (King Billy Pine). We show the range in projected distributions that result from different variable selection, climate models and emissions scenarios. The extent to which results are affected by these choices depends on the characteristics of the species modelled, but they all have the potential to substantially alter conclusions about the impacts of climate change. We discuss implications for conservation planning and management, and provide recommendations to conservation practitioners on variable selection and accommodating uncertainty when using future climate projections in species distribution models.  相似文献

An elemental S oxidation model has been developed which combines a maximum S release rate with modifiers for temperature and soil moisture conditions. This model has been combined with a pasture growth and CNSP nutrient cycling model to match S oxidation rate to pasture S demand. In two Southern Australian enviroments, 100m elemental S was superior to 200m particles whilst in Northern Australia the 200m particles were superior. The decline in soil organic matter with cropping is a major factor affecting the sustainability of cropping systems. Changes in total C levels are relativelyinsensitive as a sustainability measure. Oxidation with different strength KMnO4 has been shown to be a more sensitive indicator of change. The relative size of soil C fractions oxidised by 333 mM KMnO4 declined with cropping, whilst the relative size of the unoxidised fraction increased. Changes in 13C ratio have been used to measure C turnover in systems which include C3 and C4 species.  相似文献

Implantation of pacemakers can be challenging in the context of dilated cardiac chambers and valvular regurgitation. We report a difficult case of single chamber pacemaker implantation in a patient with restrictrive cardiomyopathy resulting in grossly enlarged atria and severe tricuspid regurgitation. In this situation, use of a slittable guiding sheath, more typically used for coronary sinus lead implantation, greatly facilitated rapid and stable deployment of the right ventricular lead.  相似文献

A wide range of extractants have been used to extract S from soils but correlations with plant response have generally been poor. Direct evidence that ester sulfates contribute to plant S supply lead to the development of the 0.25 M KCl extract heated at 40°C for 3 hours. Sequential extraction showed that this extractant removed 5.9% of ester sulfates from unfertilised soil. Support of the efficacy of the extract was obtained using specific radioactivity data from plants and soil extract.  相似文献
