Correct modeling of root water uptake partitioning over depth is an important issue in hydrological and crop growth models. Recently a physically based model to describe root water uptake was developed at single root scale and upscaled to the root system scale considering a homogeneous distribution of roots per soil layer. Root water uptake partitioning is calculated over soil layers or compartments as a function of respective soil hydraulic conditions, specifically the soil matric flux potential, root characteristics and a root system efficiency factor to compensate for within-layer root system heterogeneities. The performance of this model was tested in an experiment performed in two-compartment split-pot lysimeters with sorghum plants. The compartments were submitted to different irrigation cycles resulting in contrasting water contents over time. The root system efficiency factor was determined to be about 0.05. Release of water from roots to soil was predicted and observed on several occasions during the experiment; however, model predictions suggested root water release to occur more often and at a higher rate than observed. This may be due to not considering internal root system resistances, thus overestimating the ease with which roots can act as conductors of water. Excluding these erroneous predictions from the dataset, statistical indices show model performance to be of good quality.  相似文献

A cohort of 169 births to women who were exposed throughout pregnancy to chloroquine 300 mg base once a week for chemosuppression of malaria was studied. The birth defects in this cohort were compared with those in a control group of 454 births to women who were not exposed to chloroquine, most of whom lived in non-malarious areas. The proportion of birth defects in the exposed group was not significantly different from that in the control group. This observation must be considered within the limitations of the study, which could detect only a strong teratogenic effect. It could not exclude risks lower than a 5.7-fold increase in the incidence of birth defects when chloroquine was used. Women using chloroquine during pregnancy for chemosuppression of malaria can be reassured that it is not a strong teratogen, but if it is to be used the risk of developing malaria should be balanced against the lack of data to determine whether it carries a low teratogenic risk.  相似文献

In the Pedregal de San Angel reserve, in Mexico City, males of the butterfly Xamia xamiperch in and defend areas with well-defined topographic limits. These areas lack concentrations of receptive females and of larvae and adult resources. One individual defends the same territory an average of 5 h/day, up to a maximum of 23 days. The same areas are used as territories by different males during the year. These areas share some characteristic features which are described. Evidence is presented in support of the hypothesis that the territories function as mating stations. A possible scenario for the evolution of this territorial mating system is advanced.  相似文献

The diploid chromosome number of the Chinese raccoon dog varies from 54 (no B chromosomes) to 58 (4 B chromosomes). The B chromosomes are totally heterochromatic. An electron microscopic study was made of the synaptonemal complexes (SC) in spermatocytes of these animals. The SC karyotype consists of 27 regular chromosome pairs (autosomes and the sex chromosomes) plus the B chromosomes. The Bs pair effectively with one another at pachytene, but the SC axes of the B chromosomes are much denser than those of the A chromosomes. Depending on the number of Bs, both bivalents and multivalents have been observed. When three B chromosomes are present in a cell, parallel alignment of all three SCs can be seen. Formation of multivalents indicates high homology among these supernumerary heterochromatic chromosomes. Fusiform bulges are found along unpaired regions of all chromosomes which are particularly pronounced in diplotene.  相似文献

Summary A purification procedure to obtain RNA polymerases I (or A) and II (or B) from Dictyostelium discoideum amoeba has been developed. The enzymes were solubilized from purified nuclei and separated by DEAF-Sephadex chromatography. RNA polymerases I and II were further purified by a second chromatography on DEAE-Sephadex followed by chromatographies on phosphocellulose and heparin-sepharose. The specific activities of purified RNA polymerases I and II are 92 units/ mg protein and 70 units/ mg protein, respectively. The subunit structure of both RNA polymerases were analyzed by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis under denaturing conditions after glycerol gradient centrifugation of the enzymes. The putative subunits of RNA polymerase I have molecular weights of 180 000,125 000,43 000,40 000,34 000, 31 000, 25 000,19 000, 17 000 and 14 000. The putative subunits of RNA polymerase II have molecular weights of 200 000 (170 000), 130 000, 33 000, 25 000, 19 000, 17 000, 15 000, 13 000. There are three polypeptides with common molecular weight in Dictyostelium RNA polymerases I and 11. The isolation and characterization of cDNA and genomic clones encoding a proteinase inhibitor protein (MPI) in maize is reported. Accumulation of the MPI mRNA is induced in response to fungal infection in germinating maize embryos. The expression pattern of the MPI gene, in healthy and fungal infected maize tissues, was examined and compared with the expression pattern of a gene that codes for a pathogenesis-related protein (the PRms protein) from maize. These two genes are induced by fungal infection, however different signals trigger their activation. Accumulation of the proteinase inhibitor mRNA is more a consequence of the wound produced by the penetration and colonization of the host tissues by the pathogen, than the result of a direct molecular recognition of the pathogen by the plant, as is the case for the induction of the PRms gene. Wounding, or treatment with abscisic acid or methyl jasmonate, stimulate MPI mRNA accumulation, but not PRms mRNA accumulation. Local and systemic induction of the MPI gene expression in response to wounding occurs in maize plants. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first example of a gene from a monocotyledonous species that clearly shows a systemic wound response. The possible functional implications for the existence of different signal transduction pathways that simultaneously activate a battery of defense mechanisms against potential pathogens are discussed.  相似文献

Developing organisms are often exposed to fluctuating environments that destabilize tissue-scale processes and induce abnormal phenotypes. This might be common in species that lay eggs in the external environment and with little parental care, such as many reptiles. In turtles, morphological development has provided striking examples of abnormal phenotypic patterns, though the influence of the environment remains unclear. To this end, we compared fluctuating asymmetry, as a proxy for developmental instability, in turtle hatchlings incubated in controlled laboratory and unstable natural conditions. Wild and laboratory hatchlings featured similar proportions of supernumerary scales (scutes) on the dorsal shell (carapace). Such abnormal scutes likely elevated shape asymmetry, which was highest in natural nests. Moreover, we tested the hypothesis that hot and dry environments cause abnormal scute formation by subjecting eggs to a range of hydric and thermal laboratory incubation regimes. Shape asymmetry was similar in hatchlings incubated at five constant temperatures (26–30°C). A hot (30°C) and severely Dry substrate yielded smaller hatchlings but scutes were not overtly affected. Our study suggests that changing nest environments contribute to fluctuating asymmetry in egg-laying reptiles, while clarifying the conditions at which turtle shell development remains buffered from the external environment.  相似文献

The mud flounder Paralichthys orbignyanus (Pleuronectiformes, Paralichthyidae) inhabits shallow waters of low salinities and mud bottoms in the temperate marine coastal regions of the Bonaerensean Ecoregion of the Argentinean Biogeographic Province in the south-western Atlantic Ocean. Specimens of P. orbignyanus were collected from Lagoa dos Patos (LDP) (southern Brazil), Mar Chiquita (MCH) and Marisol (MAR) both located in Buenos Aires (Argentina), and San Antonio Oeste (SAO) in the San Matías Gulf, Rio Negro (Argentina). A fragment of the mitochondrial DNA of the Control Region and seven microsatellite loci were characterized. In the Control Region, P. orbignyanus showed high variability, low nucleotide diversity, mild population expansion and a coalescence time of 35,000 years before the present. Flounders provided evidence of a genetic structure between the sampling sites LDP, MCH, MAR vs. SAO. On the other hand, P. orbignyanus displayed a lower to moderate contemporary genetic structure among all samples except between LDP and MCH. With no evidence of isolation by distance, this analysis supports a model of limited gene flow that is likely to be associated with a consistent larvae retention in all sampling sites. In addition, the present connectivity is ascribed to a lower migration process from SAO in the San Matías Gulf congruent with the prevailing littoral drift.  相似文献

The wintering diet of Common Terns Sterna hirundo was studied by using 714 pellets collected on roosting sites at the mouth of the Lagoa dos Patos and on adjacent coastal beaches, in Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil, from March 1999 to February 2000. A total of 12 340 individual prey items of 35 different food types was found. Fish was the most important food type in the diet, constituting 32% by number and 93% by mass. Insects contributed 67% by number but only 3% by mass. The main food types were sciaenid fishes Paralonchurus brasiliensis, Micropogonias furnieri, Cynoscion guatucupa and Macrodon ancylodon. Several of these are important commercial species; fisheries potentially impact food availability to the terns, and terns may contribute significantly to the natural mortality of these fishes. Clupeiform fishes, the urophycid fish Urophycis brasiliensis and flying ants (Camponotus sp.) were also important. Species composition of the diet (food types), both by number and by mass, differed significantly between months. Prey sizes ranged in length from 12.7 mm to 217.4 mm. The average estimated total length of fish taken was 77.7 mm, but the mean differed significantly among prey species. The importance of demersal sciaenids to the diet of the Common Tern, a surface predator, may be explained by their association with aquatic predators, especially adult Bluefish Pomatomus saltatrix and Striped Weakfish Cynoscion guatucupa, and the Franciscana Dolphin Pontoporia blainvillei, which drive these fish to the surface. The occurrence of flying ants in the diet was related to offshore winds, which carried these insects out to sea. The occasional high availability of insects possibly changed the cost/benefit relationship of several food types, causing diet changes. The high number of prey species, the temporal variations in the composition of the diet and the wide range of prey sizes are evidence of the high dietary plasticity of the Common Tern, at wintering areas in southern Brazil.  相似文献
