PGRP-S (Tag7) is an innate immunity protein involved in the antimicrobial defense systems, both in insects and in mammals. We have previously shown that Tag7 specifically interacts with several proteins, including Hsp70 and the calcium binding protein S100A4 (Mts1), providing a number of novel cellular functions. Here we show that Tag7–Mts1 complex causes chemotactic migration of lymphocytes, with NK cells being a preferred target. Cells of either innate immunity (neutrophils and monocytes) or acquired immunity (CD4+ and CD8+ lymphocytes) can produce this complex, which confirms the close connection between components of the 2 branches of immune response.  相似文献

Summary Nauclea diderrichii (De Wild, and Th. Dur.) Merill (Rubiaceae), an indigenous hardwood of West Africa, is increasingly being grown commercially. This study investigates the potential for vegetative propagation and clonal selection, and raises some fundamental questions about the physiology of apical dominance and of plagiotropism. Rooting ability was high, with up to 100% rooting in 2–4 weeks, when different Indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) concentrations and leaf areas were tested. Auxin applications greatly increased the numbers of roots per cutting. The decapitation of unbranched plants revealed clonal variation in apical dominance and also in the establishment of outright dominance by the two shoots formed from the outgrowth of the axillary buds of the opposite leaves at the top node. Regression analysis of the Dominance Ratio (length of dominant: length of the sub-dominant shoot at the time of achieving dominance) against overall lateral bud activity (r = 0.82), showed that when the two top shoots co-dominate they provide a more powerful source of Correlative Inhibition than when one of the top shoots dominates the other. The imposition of plagiotropism in the axillary bud occurred over a period of a few days as the terminal and axillary buds emerged from the stipule. Growth of accessory buds on intact plants and debranched cuttings was orthotropic. These results are discussed with regard to the role of the leaf in root formation and the understanding of dominance relationships, branching and crown development in trees.  相似文献

A piece of mandible and several isolated teeth are reported from fluviatile sediments older than 4 million years at East Lake Turkana. In 8-day-old rat pups, pretreatment with a single injection of L-triiodothyronine or L-thyroxine decreased hepatic cytochrome P-450 content, aminopyrine N-demethylase activity and epoxide hydrolase activity but increased hepatic microsomal cytochrome c reductase, 7-ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase and heme oxygenase activities without significantly altering UDP-glucuronosyltransferase activity (towards o-aminophenol) or the microsomal yield.

In adult rats of either sex such single injections of L-triiodothyronine failed to significantly alter these enzyme activities. However, multiple injections evoked changes similar to those observed in the pups, in all these enzyme activities, except that 7-ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase activity was slightly decreased rather than increased.

These findings demonstrate that: (1) The hepatic monooxygenase system in the rat pup is more responsive to thyroid hormones than that in adult. (2) Thyroid hormones can decrease rat liver cytochrome P-450 content and its dependent monooxygenase activity independently of sexual maturity. (3) Thyroid hormones also decrease hepatic epoxide hydrolase activity in both pups and adults. Thus, hyperthyroidism could render the rat pup more susceptible to hepatotoxicity from electrophilic epoxides which utilize microsomal epoxide hydrolase as the major detoxication pathway.  相似文献

The bacteriological consequences of giving long-term low-dose co-trimoxazole to children to prevent reinfection of the urinary tract were studied. Only six "break-through" infections occurred during 2637 child-months of prophylaxis. The children complied well with treatment. During prophylaxis the number of rectal coliform bacilli recovered was greatly and rapidly reduced, but at least 70% of the surviving coliform organisms remained sensitive to the two components of co-trimoxazole. Changes in sensitivity pattern were evident within a month of starting treatment and the proportion of rectal organisms resistant to sulphonamide or trimethoprim did not increase with time. After stopping co-trimoxazole prophylaxis the number of rectal organisms recoverable returned rapidly to normal, as did their sensitivities to trimethoprim and sulphonamide. Further episodes of urinary tract infection developing after prophylaxis was stopped were caused by organisms sensitive to a wide range of antimicrobial agents, including trimethoprim.  相似文献

Summary A mixture of 1-naphthylacetic acid and 6-benzylaminopurine was found to be an effective substitute for the rhizome apex of attached rhizomes, when the plants were not at anthesis. The same mixture was not effective, however, when the plants were at anthesis. The same growth-regulators applied to the apical end of detached multi-node rhizome fragments did not maintain correlative inhibition unless growth-regulators were simultaneously applied to the basal end. 目的:探讨280例胃食管反流病(GERD)的分布特点及危险因素。方法:对临床诊断和胃镜确诊的280例GERD患者进行临床和风险因子相关性分析。结果:不论汉族还是维族,男性患者比例均明显高于女性;汉族患者高发年龄段早于维族患者(z=-2.939,P=0.003,);汉族和维族患者占反流性食管炎和Barrett食管比例分别为42.4%、81_3%及56.5%、18.8%,其中汉族患者Barrett食管比例较高(X2=14.358,P=0.000);肥胖、习惯性便秘、重体力活动者、饮食习惯不良在维族患者中的比例较高(P〈0.001)。结论:GERD与性别、年龄密切相关,男性多于女性,汉族患者发病年龄高峰旱于维族患者;汉族患者Barrett食管发生比例高于维族患者;肥胖、习惯性便秘、重体力活动、饮食习惯不良可能是GERD尤其是维族人群GERD的危险因素。  相似文献

Afropithecus turkanensis, a 17-17.5 million year old large-bodied hominoid from Kenya, has previously been reported to be the oldest known thick-enamelled Miocene ape. Most investigations of enamel thickness in Miocene apes have been limited to opportunistic or destructive studies of small samples. Recently, more comprehensive studies of enamel thickness and microstructure in Proconsul, Lufengpithecus, and Dryopithecus, as well as extant apes and fossil humans, have provided information on rates and patterns of dental development, including crown formation time, and have begun to provide a comparative context for interpretation of the evolution of these characters throughout the past 20 million years of hominoid evolution. In this study, enamel thickness and aspects of the enamel microstructure in two A. turkanensis second molars were quantified and provide insight into rates of enamel apposition, numbers of cells actively secreting enamel, and the time required to form regions of the crown. The average value for relative enamel thickness in the two molars is 21.4, which is a lower value than a previous analysis of this species, but which is still relatively thick compared to extant apes. This value is similar to those of several Miocene hominoids, a fossil hominid, and modern humans. Certain aspects of the enamel microstructure are similar to Proconsul nyanzae, Dryopithecus laietanus, Lufengpithecus lufengensis, Graecopithecus freybergi and Pongo pygmaeus, while other features differ from extant and fossil hominoids. Crown formation times for the two teeth are 2.4-2.6 years and 2.9-3.1 years respectively. These times are similar to a number of extant and fossil hominoids, some of which appear to show additional developmental similarities, including thick enamel. Although thick enamel may be formed through several developmental pathways, most Miocene hominoids and fossil hominids with relatively thick enamel are characterized by a relatively long period of cuspal enamel formation and a rapid rate of enamel secretion throughout the whole cusp, but a shorter total crown formation time than thinner-enamelled extant apes.  相似文献

Previous studies of elevated carbon dioxide concentration ([CO2]) on crop canopies have found that radiation-use efficiency is increased more than radiation-interception efficiency. It is assumed that increased radiation-use efficiency is due to changes in leaf-level physiology; however, canopy structure can affect radiation-use efficiency if leaves are displayed in a manner that optimizes their physiological capacity, even though the canopy intercepts the same amount of light. In order to determine the contributions of physiology and canopy structure to radiation-use and radiation-interception efficiency, this study relates leaf-level physiology and leaf display to photosynthetic rate of the outer canopy. We used a new imaging approach that delivers three-dimensional maps of the outer canopy during the growing season. The 3D data were used to model leaf orientation and mean photosynthetic electron transport of the outer canopy to show that leaf orientation changes did not contribute to increased radiation-use; i.e. leaves of the outer canopy showed similar diurnal leaf movements and leaf orientation in both treatments. Elevated [CO2] resulted in an increased maximum electron transport rate (ETRmax) of light reactions of photosynthesis. Modeling of canopy light interception showed that stimulated leaf-level electron transport at elevated [CO2], and not alterations in leaf orientation, was associated with stimulated radiation-use efficiency and biomass production in elevated [CO2]. This study provides proof of concept of methodology to quantify structure–function relationships in combination, allowing a quantitative estimate of the contribution of both effects to canopy energy conversion under elevated [CO2].  相似文献
