Prediction of the three-dimensional structure of aflatoxin of Aspergillus flavus by homology modelling

Aflatoxins are polyketide-derived secondary metabolites produced by Aspergillus spp. The toxic effects of aflatoxins have adverse consequences for human health and agricultural economics. The aflR gene, a regulatory gene for aflatoxin biosynthesis, encodes a protein containing a zinc-finger DNA-binding motif. AFLR-Protein three-dimensional model was generated using Robetta server. The modeled AFLR-Protein was further optimization and validation using Rampage. In the simulations, we monitored the backbone atoms and the C-α-helix of the modeled protein. The low RMSD and the simulation time indicate that, as expected, the 3D structural model of AFLR-protein represents a stable folding conformation. This study paves the way for generating computer molecular models for proteins whose crystal structures are not available and which would aid in detailed molecular mechanism of inhibition of aflatoxin.     

Mapping the amino acid properties of constituent nucleoporins onto the yeast nuclear pore complex

Visualization of molecular structures aids in the understanding of structural and functional roles of biological macromolecules. Macromolecular transport between the cell nucleus and cytoplasm is facilitated by the nuclear pore complex (NPC). The ring structure of the NPC is large and contains several distinct proteins (nucleoporins) which function as a selective gate for the passage of certain molecules into and out of the nucleus. In this note we demonstrate the utility of a python code that allows direct mapping of the physiochemical properties of the constituent nucleoporins on the scaffold of the yeast NPC׳s cytoplasmic view. We expect this tool to be useful for researchers to visualize the NPC based on their physiochemical properties and how it alters when specific mutations are introduced in one or more of the nucleoporins. The code developed using Python is available freely from the authors.     

The study of mosquito fauna (Diptera, Culicidae) in Volgograd city in light of the outbreak of West Nile fever in Volgograd region, 1999

Mosquito sampling was carried out in Volgograd city and its vicinity in August 2001 and 2002. In total 16,000 individuals belonging to 6 genera and 12 species were collected. Nine species were anthropophilic. Culex modestus and Aedes vexans dominated in all outdoor samples collected in Volgograd city. In addition to these species, Coquillettidia richiardii and Ae. caspius were abundant in the vicinity of Volgograd. Autogenous Cx. popiens dominated among six species sampled indoors in Volgograd city. The possible role of different mosquito species in West Nile virus circulation in Volgograd city is discussed.     

The treatment of isolated genera

Problems presented by genera, or small groups of genera, which have been given family rank are reviewed, and the genera are divided into a number of categories according to the closeness of their affinity to other genera or families. Satellite genera that stand in close relation to families should be united with them. Binary families, that have been divided into two (or more) related families, should be re–united. Families connected by linking genera, should, logically, be united but practical considerations usually prevent this. Clusters of diverse but more or less distantly related genera present unusual problems, being treated either as several, often monogeneric families or as a loosely structured family. Truly isolated genera must be given family and often ordinal rank.     

Polonium-210 in fishes from the Black Sea

The specific activity of naturally occurring radionuclide 210Po in main species of the Black Sea fishes and some their organs were used for the calculation of absorbed and equivalent dose rates. The values of the dose in investigated fish depend on their ecological belonging. Maximum values of equivalent dose rates for viscera and, first of all, liver exceed such for the whole body of fishes. But they are significantly lower than the dose rate limit recommended by IAEA for the protection of aquatic organisms from ionizing radiation.     

Natural Radioelement Polonium in Primary Ecological Groups of Black Sea Fishes

Concentrations of ²¹⁰Po, a natural alpha-radiating radionuclide were determined in various Black Sea fish species sampled along the coastal zone and in the bays of Sevastopol from May to June, 1999. Its value increased in the ecological row from the bottom through the demersal to pelagic region. Among the pelagic species, the Black Sea anchovy and sprat displayed the highest concentrations of ²¹⁰P. In fishes, the liver was the ²¹⁰Po accumulating organ.     

Long-term survival of E1 Tor cholera vibrios in naturally contaminated sewage]

El Tor cholera vibrios of Ogava serological type were revealed in the sewage of the locomotive shed for 15 months. In experiment with an oil catcher in naturally infected sewage El Tor vibrios survived 36 days, in storage of this sewage at the laboratory--39 days, in the artificially infected sewage of a settlement and of a milk plant--2 and 11 days, respectively, in the oil and disel fuel--14 months. Consequently, El Tor vibrio can survive in the sewage with a high oil product content for a long time.
