SUMMARY.
  • 1 Seasonal and local variations of some environmental conditions in the Rosetta branch of the River Nile are reported. The lowest air and water temperatures were recorded in January (winter) and the highest in July (summer). Slight decrease in water temperatures with depth is related to solar heating and mixing processes. The pH values, averaging between pH 7.5 and 8.2, showed seasonal changes which, in the main, may be related to photosynthesis.
  • 2 The seasonal average chlorosity values showed very wide variation, due to fluctuations in the discharge rate of the River Nile and its effect on the estuarine sea water. Sharp increase in chlorosity values with depth at the estuarine stations was produced by the less dense river water, flowing over denser tongues of sea water. In January, however, the maximum discharge flushed out the sea water.
  • 3 Minimum oxygen saturation values occurred in January and the highest values of dissolved organic matter were obtained in July. Both of these will be shown in a later publication to be related to phytoplankton abundance. Increase in dissolved organic matter near the bottom was common and is interpreted as due to the more complete decomposition of descending dead organisms and the release of organic matter from the bottom deposits.

We investigated the evolution of a large facial bone, the opercle (OP), in lake populations of the threespine stickleback that were founded by anadromous ancestors, in Cook Inlet, Alaska. Recent studies characterized OP variation among marine and lake populations and mapped a quantitative trait locus with a large influence on OP shape. Using populations from diverse environments and independent evolutionary histories, we examined divergence of OP shape from that of the anadromous ancestor. We report preliminary evidence for divergence between benthic and generalist lake ecotypes, necessitating further investigation. Furthermore, rapid divergence of OP shape has occurred in a lake population that was founded by anadromous stickleback in the 1980s, which is consistent with divergence of other phenotypic traits and with OP diversification in other lake populations. By contrast, there has been limited evolution of OP shape in a second lake population that may have experienced a genetic bottleneck early in its history and lacks genetic variation for OP divergence. Taken together, the results obtained from these two populations are consistent with studies of other stickleback phenotypic traits that implicate ancestral variation in postglacial adaptive radiation of threespine stickleback in fresh water.  © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2009, 97 , 832–844.  相似文献

Until recently, Tetrahymena thermophila has rarely been isolated from nature. With improved sampling procedures, T. thermophila has been found in ponds in many northeastern states. The availability of resident populations makes possible both population and ecological genetic studies. All seven known mating types have been recovered; no eighth mating type has been found. Crosses among whole-genome homozygotes derived from Pennsylvania isolates reveal a spectrum genotypes with mating type alleles resembling traditional A (IV- and VII-) and B(I-) categories. The genotypes differ significantly with respect to mating type frequency, both among themselves and from previously described genotypes. One A-category genotype appears to lack mating type II, while one A-category and all B-category genotypes have low frequencies of mating type III, thus accounting for the low frequency of III in the pond. The low frequency of III in all five B-category genotypes examined suggests that the founding allele in this region was low for III. These and other differences are discussed both in terms of mating type frequencies in the pond and in terms of the possible molecular structure of mat alleles. By contrast, numerous variants of the cell surface immobilization antigen are found in addition to the previously described i-antigens. Variants of the known SerH alleles include those with restriction fragment length polymorphisms and temperature sensitivity as well as alleles with new antigenic specificity. Multiple alleles are present in single ponds. Genes exhibiting serially dominant epistasis over SerH genes also are found. In two instances (K and C), families of antigenically similar polypeptides are expressed in place of H i-antigen. Molecular weight differences suggest that these paralogous i-antigen genes evolve by gene duplication and unequal crossing over within central repeats. The existence of complex patterns of epistasis together with seasonal changes in i-ag frequencies suggest that i-ag play an important, but as yet unknown, ecological role related to the occurrence of frequent conjugation.  相似文献

SUMMARY. Sediment quality and meiofauna distribution were investigated in the Shatt Al-Arab near Basrah (Iraq). Four stations were fixed in a transect reaching from the eulittoral to the main channel of the river. The sediment was investigated with respect to wet mud density, dry mud density, water content, organic matter, calcareous substances, and allochthonous inorganic materials. There were no major differences between the sediments taken at the different stations. Sediment quality was not a limiting factor for the distribution of meiofauna; important factors were water current, light penetration and temperature. The current has a great influence on sediment structure, the main channel of the river had harder sediment consisting of clay. Because of high turbidity, light can reach the bottom only in shallow water at stations I and II; macrophytes were present only at these two stations. The highest numbers of invertebrates were found at station II (0.5 m depth). As water depth increased, the abundance of meiofauna decreased. Nevertheless, the number of individuals at station I (0.05 m) in the tidal zone was lower than at station II. This fact can be explained by the magnitude of changes of the environmental conditions, especially temperature and insolation. There were very large diurnal temperature fluctuations, fluctuating between 10 and 25°C on a single day. Many meiofauna species cannot tolerate such fluctuations and colonize mainly the deeper reaches of the river, which are continuously covered by water. Stronger currents in the middle of the river prevent the settlement of large numbers of animals in this area.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Chronotype questionnaires provide a simple and time-effective approach to assessing individual differences in circadian variations. Chronotype questionnaires traditionally focused on one dimension of chronotype, namely its orientation along a continuum of morningness and eveningness. The Caen Chronotype Questionnaire (CCQ) was developed to assess an additional dimension of chronotype that captures the extent to which individual functioning varies during the day (amplitude). The aim of this study was to provide a multilanguage validation of the CCQ in six world regions (Arabic, Dutch, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish). At Time 1, a total of 2788 participants agreed to take part in the study (Arabic, n = 731; Dutch, n = 538; German, n = 329; Italian, n = 473; Portuguese, n = 361; Spanish, n = 356). Participants completed an assessment of the CCQ together with the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ; Horne & Ostberg 1976) as well as questions related to factors theoretically related to chronotype (age, shift work, physical activity, sleep parameters and coffee consumption). One month later, participants again completed the CCQ. Results showed that the two-factor structure (morningness-eveningness and amplitude) of the CCQ could be replicated in all six languages. However, measurement invariance could not be assumed regarding the factor loadings across languages, meaning that items loaded more on their factors in some translations than in others. Test–retest reliability of the CCQ ranged from unacceptable (German version) to excellent (Dutch, Portuguese). Convergent validity was established through small–medium effect size correlations between the morningness-eveningness dimension of the CCQ and the MEQ. Taken together, our findings generally support the use of the translated versions of the CCQ. Further validation work on the CCQ is required including convergent validation against physiological markers of sleep, health and well-being.  相似文献

SUMMARY.
  • 1 Seasonal qualitative and quantitative studies of the phytoplankton of the Rosetta branch of the River Nile are reported. Most of the genera were Bacillariophyceae, with Chlorophyceae and Cyanophyceae second and third. Only two genera of Dinophyceae were present. The phytoplankton can be broadly described as eurythermal and euryhaline.
  • 2 Phytoplankton tended to be more concentrated in surface waters and showed large variations from station to station, with noticeably lower values in the estuarine region except in January.
  • 3 Most of the genera were recorded at all times but seasonally the highest numbers of diatoms and green algae were found in July during a period of high temperature and low discharge whereas blue-greens achieved maximum density in October.

Oncocyclus irises endemic to Lebanon form a complex of three closely related taxa replacing each other over short geographical distances in a linear habitat. In order to characterize the appropriate taxonomic levels and to assess their conservation status, we investigated patterns of phenotypic variability and the partitioning of genetic variation within and among populations using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. Multivariate analysis (principal components analysis and multiple correspondence analysis), based on 16 quantitative and six qualitative characters, revealed no separation between populations or taxa. Moreover, no morphological character could be used to define clear boundaries between populations/taxa. The genetic characterization revealed high levels of polymorphism and diversity (Hs). Principal components analysis showed population delimitations, but no groupings reflecting the currently defined taxa could be identified. Both morphological and genetic data showed that Lebanese oncocyclus irises could not be fitted into clear taxonomic boundaries. Nitrogen fixation in legumes is downregulated through a whole plant N feedback mechanism, for example, when under stress. This mechanism is probably triggered by the impact of shoot‐borne, phloem‐delivered compounds. However, little is known about any whole‐plant mechanism that might upregulate nitrogen fixation, for example, under N deficiency. We induced emerging N‐deficiency through partial excision of nodules from Medicago truncatula plants. Subsequently, the activity and composition of the remaining nodules and shifts in concentration of free amides/amino acids in the phloem were monitored. Furthermore, we mimicked these shifts through artificial feeding of γ‐aminobutyric acid (GABA) into the phloem of undisturbed plants. As a result of increased specific activity of nodules, N2 fixation per plant recovered almost completely 4–5 d after excision. The concentration of amino acids, sugars and organic acids increased strongly in the upregulated nodules. A concomitant analysis of the phloem revealed a significant increase in GABA concentration. Comparable with the effect of nodule excision, artificial GABA feeding into the phloem resulted in an increased activity and higher concentration of amino acids and organic acids in nodules. It is concluded that GABA might be involved in upregulating nodule activity, possibly because of its constituting part of a putative amino acid cycle between bacteroids and the cytosol.  相似文献
