1. Ants in the genus Strumigenys are predator ants that feed on tiny soil arthropods. The mandibles are modified into high‐speed traps to capture swift collembolan prey. The peculiar mandible morphologies of these ants have evolved depending on characteristics of the prey. Specifically, the evolution of mandible size and shape may be directly driven by prey size. 2. In the present study, the intraspecific variation of the morphological traits of Strumigenys lewisi populations were observed in central Japan. The relationships between the morphological variations and the prey body size were analysed. 3. In workers and queens, three morphological traits, head width, mandible length, and mandible width were significantly different among the multiple sites. Specifically, the mandible length was shorter in southwestern Japan than in other sampling locations. The ancova model revealed that the allometry of the mandible length to the head width was different among the sites. 4. As predicted, the mandible length was positively correlated with the average body size of collembolans in the Entomobryidae family. Furthermore, multiple regression analysis showed that the variation of the mandible length was affected by environmental factors represented as location information. However, the effect of collembolan body size was more effective at predicting mandible length. The study suggests that the geographical variation of mandible morphologies in S. lewisi has been selected by predator–prey interactions with collembolans.  相似文献

Most social Hymenoptera are characterized by simple haploid sex determination and environment-based caste differentiation. This appears to be strikingly different in the queen-polymorphic ant Vollenhovia emeryi. Almost all long- and short-winged queens from a population in Central Japan were homozygous at three microsatellite loci, whereas workers were mostly heterozygous, suggesting either a complex system of genetic caste determination or, more likely, the production of female sexuals from unfertilized eggs by thelytokous parthenogenesis and of workers from fertilized eggs. Furthermore, male genotypes were not compatible with those of the queens and had exclusively the paternal allele found in the sterile, heterozygous workers, probably because males are produced from fertilized eggs after the exclusion of maternal nuclear DNA as recently reported for Wasmannia auropunctata. The genus Vollenhovia might provide an interesting model system to trace the evolution of unusual caste and sex determination systems.  相似文献

Erythronium japonicum (Liliaceae) inhabits deciduous mesic forests of Hokkaido, northern Japan. Myrmecochory of this species was investigated, especially the dispersal frequency, the effect of seed predators and the seed fall pattern. In the quadrat census using marked seeds of E. japonicum, the ant Myrmica kotokui frequently transported the seeds. However, the frequency of seed removal was low and most seeds were dispersed as little as 1 m or less. The spatial distribution of E. japonicum individuals was nearly random and most seedlings were established 5–20 cm away from the fertile plants, indicating that even this small scale of seed dispersal contributes to avoiding crowding of seedlings. Some arthropods, e.g. springtails, spiders and ticks, hindered seed dispersal by devouring elaiosomes and seeds. Although ground beetle species also damaged seeds and elaiosomes, a few of them exhibited seed removal behaviour. E. japonicum dropped their seeds not all at once but bit by bit, taking 3–6 days to drop all seeds. This seed-fall pattern was effective in raising the frequency of seed removal by ants and reducing seed predation by some arthropods.  相似文献

In eusocial Hymenoptera, worker reproduction is affected by various factors, especially the genetic structure of the colony. Kinship theory predicts that hymenopteran workers prefer to produce sons rather than brothers when a single, once-mated queen is in a colony, while such worker reproduction is expected to be mutually inhibited by other workers under multiple mating of the queen. To test these predictions we observed the behaviour of the myrmicine ant Aphaenogaster smythiesi japonica. Observation of the social structure of 60 queenright colonies indicated monogyny and microsatellite DNA analysis of 14 colonies showed monandry. Under laboratory conditions, workers with functional ovaries laid only trophic eggs in the presence of the queen and produced viable eggs in her absence. In an experiment in which colonies split and reunited, workers that had well-developed ovarioles with viable oocytes were frequently attacked by other workers from the queenright groups. The number of oocytes in a worker's ovarioles was positively correlated with the frequency of being attacked. The results show that a worker's production of males in this species is potentially inhibited by worker policing, contrary to the prediction that worker policing is not predominant in monogynous and monandrous societies. Viola is one of the diplochorous plant genera that disperse their seeds in two ways, ballistic and ant dispersal. We compared the seed dispersal of two major Viola species of northern Japan, V. selkirkii and V. verecunda. The mean weight of seed was less in V. verecunda (0.42 ± SD 0.03 mg) than in V. selkirkii (0.61 ± 0.12 mg). The elaiosome of V. selkirkii (0.02 ± 0.004 mg) was larger than in of V. verecunda (0.006 ± 0.0004 mg), whereas the lipid component of elaiosome was not remarkably different between the two species. In ballistic dispersal, the mean dispersal distance was 56.0 ± 17.5 cm in V. verecunda but only 38.3 ± 5.1 cm in V. selkirkii. In ant dispersal, the mean dispersal distance was 28.1 ± 24.9 cm in V. selkirkii and 36.1 ± 33.7 cm in V. verecunda; however, the seed removal frequency of V. selkirkii (15.5%) was much higher than that of V. verecunda (3.0%). These results suggest that V. selkirkii is more dependent on ant dispersal while V. verecunda is more dependent on ballistic dispersal. The effect of seed predation was very serious in both species. In the quadrat census, 99.0% of V. selkirkii seeds and 99.1% of V. verecunda seeds were damaged by ground beetles, spiders, ticks, and others which frequently devoured diaspores. An experiment with V. verecunda seeds demonstrated that the overdispersion of seeds on the forest floor enhanced the frequency of removal by ants and reduced seed damage by predators.  相似文献

In tropical forests, ants frequently consume fruit pulp around seeds of vertebrate-dispersed plants, which protects the seeds from infection by fungus and pathogens. Seed cleaning behavior by omnivorous ants was observed in the secondary forests of Bogor botanical garden in West Java. Fruit pulp around the seeds of the rambutan Nephelium lappaceum was completely removed by Pheidole plagiaria, Anoplolepis gracilipes, and other ants. When seed cleaners were excluded, however, many seeds were attacked by fungus and died. Seeds that were cleaned by hand, but not by ants, were similarly attacked. Field experiments on seed cleaning by P. plagiaria revealed that the anti-fungal effect was not merely caused by removal of fruit pulp, and that seed cleaning reduced the development of spores and hypha of fungi. We suggest that the workers apply anti-fungal substances to the fruit pulp and seed surface.  相似文献

In colonies of the queen‐polymorphic ant Vollenhovia emeryi, some colonies produce only long‐winged (L) queens, while others produce only short‐winged (S) queens. At four nuclear microsatellite loci, males in the S colony had alleles that were different from those of their queen. This suggests that the nuclear genome of males is not inherited from their colony queen, as has also been described for Wasmannia auropunctata (Roger). In V. emeryi the possibility of male transfer from other colonies has not been ruled out because previous studies of this species have obtained only nuclear gene information. We analyzed both mitochondrial and nuclear genes for S queens, S males and L queens to clarify the origins of males. Sequence analyses showed that although S queens and S males shared the same mtDNA haplotype, they had a different genotype at a nuclear gene (long‐wavelength opsin) locus. Neighbor‐joining analysis based on the four microsatellite loci also suggested gene pool separation between S queens and S males. These results are consistent with predictions of clonal reproduction by males. While L queens share opsin genotypes with S males, they have very different mtDNA sequences. Hybridization in the near past between S queens and L males or gene transmission from S males to L queen populations in the present would explain these differences.  相似文献
