C-reactive protein (CRP) is an inflammatory marker, which at low-level elevations is associated with increased cardiovascular risk. Although CRP has been extensively investigated in North American and European settings, few studies have measured CRP among non-Western groups. The present study used dried whole blood spot samples to examine high-sensitivity CRP concentrations among the Yakut (Sakha) of Siberia (85 females, 56 males; 18-58 years old). Our goals were: (1) to compare Yakut CRP concentrations with other populations; (2) to investigate sex differences; and (3) to explore anthropometric correlates of CRP. Results indicate that serum equivalent CRP concentrations are similar to those from industrializing nations, lower than US and European values, and greater than Japanese concentrations. Yakut men and women display similar CRP concentrations; however, CRP was significantly higher among men after adjustment for body fat, age, and smoking. Positive associations were documented between CRP and BMI, body fat, and central adiposity.  相似文献

Once considered a disease of affluence and confined to industrialized nations, obesity is currently emerging as a major health concern in nearly every country in the world. Available data suggest that the prevalence rate of obesity has reached unprecedented levels in most developing countries, and is increasing at a rate that far outpaces that of developed nations. This increase in obesity has also been documented among North American circumpolar populations and is associated with lifestyle changes related to economic development. While obesity has not been well studied among indigenous Siberians, recent anthropological studies indicate that obesity and its associated comorbidities are important health problems.The present study examines recent adult body composition data from four indigenous Siberian populations (Evenki, Ket, Buriat, and Yakut) with two main objectives: 1) to determine the prevalence of overweight and obesity among these groups, and 2) to assess the influence of lifestyle and socioeconomic factors on the development of excess body fat. The results of this study indicate that obesity has emerged as an important health issue among indigenous Siberians, and especially for women, whose obesity rates are considerably higher than those of men (12% vs. 7%). The present study investigated the association between lifestyle and body composition among the Yakut, and documented substantial sex differences in lifestyle correlates of obesity. Yakut men with higher incomes and who owned more luxury consumer goods were more likely to have excess body fat while, among Yakut women, affluence was not strongly associated with overweight and obesity.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of economic and cultural change on immune function and psychosocial stress in an indigenous Siberian population. We examined Epstein‐Barr virus antibodies (EBV), an indirect biomarker of cell‐mediated immune function, in venous whole blood samples collected from 143 Yakut (Sakha) herders (45 men and 98 women) in six communities using a cross‐sectional study design. We modeled economic change through the analysis of lifestyle incongruity (LI), calculated as the disparity between socioeconomic status and material lifestyle, computed with two orthogonal scales: market and subsistence lifestyle. EBV antibody level was significantly negatively associated with both a market and a subsistence lifestyle, indicating higher cell‐mediated immune function associated with higher material lifestyle scores. In contrast, LI was significantly positively associated with EBV antibodies indicating lower immune function, and suggesting higher psychosocial stress, among individuals with economic status in excess of material lifestyle. Individuals with lower incongruity scores (i.e., economic status at parity with material resources, or with material resources in excess of economic status) had significantly lower EBV antibodies. The findings suggest significant health impacts of changes in material well‐being and shifting status and prestige markers on health during the transition to a market economy in Siberia. The findings also suggest that relative, as opposed to absolute, level of economic status or material wealth is more strongly related to stress in the Siberian context. Nanoparticles with a high atomic number are of interest as radiosensitizers for radiation therapy of cancer. A variety of nanoparticles and radiation sources makes the challenge of selecting their optimal combinations to achieve maximum irradiation efficacy relevant. In this work, we calculated the values of the dose enhancement factors of elemental compositions of metal oxide nanoparticles (Al2O3, TiO2, MnO2, Fe2O3 and Fe3O4, NiO, GeO2, ZrO2, CeO2, Gd2O3, Tm2O3, HfO2, Ta2O5, and Bi2O3), as well as GeO2 and HfO2 doped with the rare-earth elements lanthanum or ytterbium in combination with monochromatic photons (1–500 keV) and X-ray radiation corresponding to the radiation of kilovoltage X-ray therapy machines. At a nanoparticle concentration of 10 mg/mL, the maximum values of the dose enhancement factors were from 1.03 to 2.55 for monochromatic radiation and from 1.01 to 2.33 for the studied X-ray spectra. Doping GeO2 with 20% lanthanum or ytterbium led to an increase in the maximum value of dose enhancement factors by ~10%. Doping HfO2 did not lead to significant changes in the value of dose-enhancement factors. Thus, all studied elemental compositions of nanoparticles, with the exception of Al2O3 (a dose enhancement factor ~1.02), are promising for application in kilovoltage X-ray radiotherapy. At the same time, the complex dependence of dose enhancement factors on the spectral composition of X-ray radiation requires detailed studies of the impact of irradiation conditions on the magnitude of the radiomodifying effect of nanoparticles.

A survey for the presence of markers of viral hepatitis B, delta, C and E among different groups of the population of the arctic and agricultural zones of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), as well as in Yakutsk, was carried out. The survey revealed that viral hepatitides with the parenteral mechanism of the transmission of infective agents were widely spread among the population. In the arctic zone HBsAg was detected in persons aged 20 years and older in 10.8-17.1% of cases. On the average, in the arctic zone antibodies to virus delta were detected in 2.4% of cases. In different regions of the agricultural zone the detection rate of HBsAg was also high (10.4-23.8%). In the Namsk and Vilyui regions delta infection was registered among adolescents (15-19 years of age) in 8.7 and 22.4% of cases respectively. In the Mountainous region anti-delta antibodies were detected among persons aged 20 years and older in 31% of cases. The survey showed the presence of considerable differences in the detection rate of the markers of hepatitis B, depending on the ethnic origin of the examined patients. Similar tendencies were found to exist with respect to delta infection.  相似文献

Despite the modern advances in medicine, cure for malignant glioblastomas remains an elusive goal. Both the invasive nature and the location in vital areas of the brain make this type of tumors difficult to treat surgically, while adjuvant therapy fails to bring the expected results. Frequent recurrence and invasiveness of malignant gliomas are due to the resistance of glioma stem cells to conventional radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Technological achievements in constructing recombinant viruses yielded strains with high oncolytic activity toward glial tumors. Many of these strains have passed Phase I clinical studies and proved to be highly safe. Although the approach is obviously promising, the available strains are not efficacious enough to cure the disease and need further improvement. The review summarizes the results reported for the most successful variants of oncolytic viruses that have come down to clinical trials and discusses the prospects of new approaches to viral therapy of malignant gliomas.  相似文献
