Neutral genetic structure of natural populations is primarily influenced by migration (the movement of individuals and, subsequently, their genes) and drift (the statistical chance of losing genetic diversity over time). Migration between populations is influenced by several factors, including individual behavior, physical barriers, and environmental heterogeneity among populations. However, drift is expected to be stronger in populations with low immigration rate and small effective population size. With the technological advancement in geological information systems and spatial analysis tools, landscape genetics now allows the development of realistic migration models and increased insight to important processes influencing diversity of natural populations. In this study, we investigated the relationship between landscape connectivity and genetic distance of threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) inhabiting a pond complex in Belgjarskógur, Northeast Iceland. We used two landscape genetic approaches (i.e., least-cost-path and isolation-by-resistance) and asked whether gene flow, as measured by genetic distance, was more strongly associated with Euclidean distance (isolation-by-distance) or with landscape connectivity provided by areas prone to flooding (as indicated by Carex sp. cover)? We found substantial genetic structure across the study area, with pairwise genetic distances among populations (DPS) ranging from 0.118 to 0.488. Genetic distances among populations were more strongly correlated with least-cost-path and isolation-by-resistance than with Euclidean distance, whereas the relative contribution of isolation-by-resistance and Euclidian distance could not be disentangled. These results indicate that migration among stickleback populations occurs via periodically flooded areas. Overall, this study highlights the importance of transient landscape elements influencing migration and genetic structure of populations at small spatial scales.  相似文献

By combining low nutrient enrichments and molecular methods, a high diversity of new amylase genes was detected in a neutral sulphide-rich hot spring in Iceland. Enrichments based on hot spring water and low concentrations of starch were used to select slow-growing, starch-degrading microorganisms. Six enrichments had in total 17 bacterial types detected by 16S rRNA analysis, mostly related to the Thermus-Deinococcus group, green non-sulphur bacteria, gram positives, and uncultivated new candidate divisions. No Archaea were found. The apparent 16S rRNA species composition of the enrichments was very different from that of the microbial mat in the same hot spring. DNA samples obtained from 4 enrichments and from hot spring biomass were screened by PCR for amylase genes in glycoside-hydrolase family 13. Degenerate primers, based on conserved amino acid sequences from multiplealignments of family 13, enabled the detection of 18 amylase sequence types in the enrichments, including -amylases, -glucosidases, 1,4--glucan branching enzymes, cyclomaltodextrin hydrolases, maltogenic amylases and neopullulanases, and unspecified family 13 glycoside-hydrolases. Only one unique neopullulanase sequence, also found in most of the enrichments, was detected in the hot spring biomass DNA. The results suggest that the enrichment method combined with sequence-based screening is an efficient way to access the silent, i.e. not detectable, gene diversity in natural environments.  相似文献

Threespine stickleback most often have 10 pectoral fin rays, and it seems to be a highly canalized trait. We observed an unusually high frequency of stickleback with 11 pectoral fin rays in a population recently isolated from the marine environment in a freshwater lagoon in Iceland. These new morphologies may be beneficial for the fish in the new habitat but may disappear because of strong canalizing selection for the typical 10 pectoral fin rays.Co-ordinating editor: Kaitala  相似文献

The microbial diversity of intertidal hot springs on the seashore of northwest Iceland was examined by combining directed in situ enrichments, artificial support colonization, and mat sampling. Analysis of 16S rRNA genes revealed the presence of clones related to both marine and terrestrial, thermophilic, mesophilic, and psychrophilic microorganisms scattered among 11 bacterial divisions. No archaea were found. The species composition of the enrichments was affected by the length of the hot periods experienced at low tide and was very different from those found in the biomass. A total of 36 chitinase genes were detected by molecular screening of the samples with degenerate primers for glycoside hydrolase family 18. The chitinase gene diversity was at least twofold higher in the enrichment samples than in the controls, indicating that a much higher diversity of hydrolytic genes can be accessed with this approach.  相似文献

Evolution of similar phenotypes in independent populations is often taken as evidence of adaptation to the same fitness optimum. However, the genetic architecture of traits might cause evolution to proceed more often toward particular phenotypes, and less often toward others, independently of the adaptive value of the traits. Freshwater populations of Alaskan threespine stickleback have repeatedly evolved the same distinctive opercle shape after divergence from an oceanic ancestor. Here we demonstrate that this pattern of parallel evolution is widespread, distinguishing oceanic and freshwater populations across the Pacific Coast of North America and Iceland. We test whether this parallel evolution reflects genetic bias by estimating the additive genetic variance-covariance matrix (G) of opercle shape in an Alaskan oceanic (putative ancestral) population. We find significant additive genetic variance for opercle shape and that G has the potential to be biasing, because of the existence of regions of phenotypic space with low additive genetic variation. However, evolution did not occur along major eigenvectors of G, rather it occurred repeatedly in the same directions of high evolvability. We conclude that the parallel opercle evolution is most likely due to selection during adaptation to freshwater habitats, rather than due to biasing effects of opercle genetic architecture.  相似文献

We examine the relationship of the inbreeding coefficient (f) and molecular estimates of inbreeding (IR, sMLH) in the Icelandic sheepdog. The breed experienced a severe genetic bottleneck and near extinction in the last century. Molecular estimates and the inbreeding coefficient are significantly correlated despite the moderate number of markers and individuals used in this study. This is most likely an effect of the extreme relatedness and relatively high variance in individual inbreeding coefficients in the population. There is a significant relationship between inbreeding (f) and the occurrence of hip dysplasia. However, the molecular measures did not detect hip dysplasia as an inbreeding effect.  相似文献

Extant baleen whales (Cetacea, Mysticeti) are a disparate and species‐rich group, but little is known about their fossil record in the northernmost Atlantic Ocean, a region that supports considerable extant cetacean diversity. Iceland's geographical setting, dividing North Atlantic and Arctic waters, renders it ideally situated to shed light on cetacean evolution in this region. However, as a volcanic island, Iceland exhibits very little marine sedimentary exposure, and fossil whales from Iceland older than the late Pleistocene are virtually unknown. Here, we present the first fossil whale found in situ from the Pliocene Tjörnes Formation (c. 4.5 Ma), Iceland's only substantial marine sedimentary outcrop. The specimen is diagnosed as a partial skull from a large right whale (Mysticeti, Balaenidae). This discovery highlights the Tjörnes Formation as a potentially productive fossil vertebrate locality. Additionally, this find indicates that right whales (Eubalaena) and bowhead whales (Balaena) were sympatric, with broadly overlapping latitudinal ranges in the Pliocene, in contrast to the modern latitudinal separation of their living counterparts.  相似文献

Foraging in social groups has a number of benefits but can also increase the risk of exploitation. High tendency to shoal may be correlated with groups foraging, although facultatively social fish adjust both shoaling decisions and food resource defence based on intrinsic and extrinsic factors. The main aim of this study was to examine the relationships between shoaling, solitary foraging and aggression, forager tolerance of conspecifics joining at a discovered food patch and forager exploitation of resources discovered by others. We used two intra‐lacustrine three‐spined stickleback morph pairs, lava and mud, and monomorphic morphs from each of lava and mud habitats. The lava morph formed less cohesive shoals, was bolder during solitary foraging, approached and entered an occupied food patch less frequently than the mud morph, suggesting a link between shoaling and the propensity for social foraging. However, shoaling tendency and joiner tolerance were not correlated at a population level. Intralacustrine lava and mud morphs differed more markedly in joiner tolerance than morphs from single habitat lakes, whereas the opposite was true for shoaling tendency. We conclude that, in addition to differentiation in shoaling tendency, the lava and mud morphs differ in social foraging and these variations may act to promote population divergence. © 2014 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2014, 113 , 194–203.  相似文献
