Influence of immobilisation of limbs in kittens on the morphology of the developing neuromuscular junctions

Immobilisation of limbs in kittens, in which the neuromuscular apparatus is in active growing phase, affects the maturation of the end-plates, which appear smaller and pointed. Longer periods of immobilisation lead to a significant reduction in the surface area of the neuromuscular junctions which were seen to be "V" or "W" shaped.     

Mutagenic evaluation of propranolol in somatic and germ cells of mice

The mutagenic effect of an antihypertensive drug, propranolol, was studied on somatic and germ cells of Swiss albino mice. The induction of a significant increase in the frequency of micronuclei in erythrocytes was observed at higher dose levels, whereas, in germ cells, propranolol failed to induce significant chromosomal aberrations at any dose tested.     

Enhancement of water status by calcium pretreatment in groundnut and cowpea plants subjected to moisture stress

Summary The effect of calcium in the water relations and tolerance to moisture deficits was tested in groundnut and cowpea. In both species, enrichment of tissue with calcium resulted in maintenance of a higher water status under stress associated with low proline accumulation. The extent of membrane damage (as reflected by the absorbance at 273 nm) was lesser in leaves of plants fed with higher levels of Ca⁺⁺ when subjected to simulated stress. The rate of water loss from the leaves of Ca⁺⁺-enriched plants was also lower. The possible role of Ca⁺⁺ in inducing membrane stability and maintenance of higher water status is discussed.     

Isolation of the sodium-dependent d-glucose transport protein from brush-border membranes

Rabbit kidney brush-border membrane vesicles were exposed to bacterial protease which cleaves off a large number of externally oriented proteins. Na⁺-dependent d-glucose transport is left intact in the protease-treated vesicles. The protease-treated membrane was solubilized with deoxycholate and the deoxycholate-extracted proteins were further resolved by passage through Con A-Sepharose columns. Sodium-dependent d-glucose activity was found to reside in a fraction containing a single protein band of M_r ? 165000 which is apparently a dimer of M_r ? 85 000. When reconstituted and tested for transport, this protein showed Na⁺-dependent, stereo-specific and phlorizin-inhibitable glucose transport. Transport activity is completely recovered and is 20-fold increased in specific activity. A similar isolate was obtained from rabbit small intestinal brush-border membranes and kidneys from several other species of animals.     

‘Leaf tip hooding’ — an induced mutation inN. Tabacum,var. Delcrest

A leaf tip hooded mutant was isolated in the progenies of the irradiated seeds of a commercial tobacco variety, namely Delcrest. The mutant character was determined as monogenic recessive. Along with leaf tip hooding, certain other characters such as increase in size of leaves, number and clasping arrangement of leaves on stem, and delayed flowering, were found to be closely associated and this was attributed to the pleiotropic effect of the leaf tip hooding gene.     

Trisomy 18q: 46,XX,-10,+der(10) t(10;18) (p15;q12) pat: a case report.

A 2-month-old female with intrauterine and postnatal growth retardation, multiple congenital anomalies, absent right kidney, congenital heart disease was investigated. Her karyotype revealed, 46,XX,-10,+der(10), t(10;18) (p15;q12) pat. The child died at 2 months 2 weeks. This is the third case of trisomy 18q resulting from translocation of chromosome 10 and 18.
