Annual net production was estimated in the secondary coppice forest near Tokyo, which was dominated by a deciduous oak,Quercus serrata Thunb. Lateral growth of stems and old branches was directly estimated by examining the annual rings for 35 shoots in a clear-cut
quadrat of 10m×10m. Phytomasses of current organs were also weighed in the quadrat. Preharvest losses of current organs were
determined by twelve 0.5 m2 litter traps for fine litter and twelve 6 m2 quadrats for woody litter. Branch production was also assessed indirectly by use of the stem-branch allometry and death of
branches. The results of the indirect method were in sufficient agreement with the result of the direct one. Grazing loss
of leaves from the canopy was estimated directly from the loss in leaf area and indirectly from the animal faeces caught by
the litter traps.
Net production of the canopy trees was 149 kg a−1 year−1, in which leaf production was 36.9 kg. Animals grazed about 14% of the leaf area by the end of the growing season. True consumption
of leaves by animals was 7.6% of leaf production or 10% of leaf mass. Production of undergrowth, mainly a dwarf bamboo,Pleioblastus chino Makino, was 28 kg a−1 year−1, being 15% of the total stand production.
Productivity of this forest was significantly higher than that of cool-temperate deciduous broadleaf forests. 相似文献

Fresh loquat leaves have been used as folk health herb in Asian countries for long time, although the evidence supporting their functions is still minimal. This study aimed to clarify the chemopreventive effect of loquat tea extract (LTE) by investigating the inhibition on proliferation, and underlying mechanisms in human promyelocytic leukemia cells (HL-60). LTE inhibited proliferation of HL-60 in a dose-dependent manner. Molecular data showed that the isolated fraction of LTE induced apoptosis of HL-60 as characterized by DNA fragmentation; activation of caspase-3, -8, and -9; and inactivation of poly(ADP)ribose polymerase. Moreover, LTE fraction increased the ratio of pro-apoptotic Bcl-2-associated X protein (Bax)/anti-apoptotic myeloid cell leukemia 1 (Mcl-1) that caused mitochondrial membrane potential loss and cytochrome c released to cytosol. Thus, our data indicate that LTE might induce apoptosis in HL-60 cells through a mitochondrial dysfunction pathway. Expression of nephrin, a crucial component of the glomerular slit diaphragm, is downregulated in patients with proteinuric glomerular diseases. Using conditionally immortalized reporter podocytes, we found that bystander macrophages as well as macrophage-derived cytokines IL-1beta and TNF-alpha markedly suppressed activity of the nephrin gene promoter in podocytes. The cytokine-initiated repression was reversible, observed on both basal and inducible expression, independent of Wilms' tumor suppressor WT1, and caused in part via activation of the phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase/Akt pathway. These results indicated a novel mechanism by which activated macrophages participate in the induction of proteinuria in glomerular diseases. 相似文献

The Solanum abutiloides plant is highly resistant to soil-borne pathogens such as Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. melongenae, Verticillium dahliae, and Ralstonia solanacearum. This species is utilized as a mating source of resistant cultivars and is also used as a rootstock. The root exudate of Solanum abutiloides was extracted from a soil system composed of charcoal and vermiculite. Anti-fungal activity was found in the extract, and an active ingredient was isolated. The chemical structure of the active compound was determined to be 3-beta-acetoxysolavetivone, a new sesquiterpenoid. The anti-fungal activity of 3-beta-acetoxysolavetivone examined by the inhibition of spore germination of Fusarium oxysporum was close to that of lubimin, and higher than that of solavetivone. 相似文献

The small GTPase Rho and its effector ROCK/Rho-kinase regulate actin cytoskeletal reorganization through phosphorylation of the regulatory light chain of myosin II. We previously reported that ROCK co-purified with the actin-binding protein filamin-A from HeLa cells. Here, we show that the pleckstrin homology (PH) domain of ROCK, but not the kinase or coiled-coil domain, interacts with filamin-A. We also determined that the PH domain of ROCK binds to the carboxy-terminal region of filamin-A containing the last 24th repeat. Monocytes/macrophages exposed to LPS show reduced responses to second stimulation with LPS, which is termed LPS tolerance. In this study, we investigated molecular mechanism of LPS tolerance in macrophages. Mouse peritoneal macrophages pre-exposed to LPS exhibited reduced production of inflammatory cytokines in a time- and dose-dependent manner. Activation of neither IL-1 receptor-associated kinase nor NF-kappaB was observed in macrophages that became tolerant by LPS pretreatment, indicating that the proximal event in Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4)-MyD88-dependent signaling is affected in tolerant macrophages. Although TLR4 mRNA expression significantly decreased within a few hours of LPS pretreatment and returned to the original level at 24 h, the surface TLR4 expression began to decrease within 1 h, with a gradual decrease after that, and remained suppressed over 24 h. A decrease in inflammatory cytokine production in tolerant macrophages well correlates with down-regulation of the surface TLR4 expression, which may explain one of the mechanisms for LPS tolerance. 相似文献

In this study, we cloned and characterized the follicle stimulating hormone receptor (Fshr) and luteinizing hormone receptor (Lhr) cDNAs of pejerrey Odontesthes bonariensis, a species with temperature‐dependent sex determination (TSD), and analyzed their expression in relation to Fshb and Lhb subunits during gonadogenesis at temperatures producing only females (17°C, FPT), both sexes (25°C, MixPT), and only males (29°C, MPT). The pejerrey Fshr cDNA had 3,069 bp for a mature protein of 694 amino acids (aa) and a signal peptide of 22 aa; the Lhr cDNA had 2,936 bp for a mature protein of 676 aa and a signal peptide of 25 aa. With the exception of Lhr in fish at the MPT, all genes showed significant increases and/or peaks of expression before histological differentiation of the gonads regardless of temperature. Larvae at the FPT had lower Fshb and Lhb but higher Lhr expression during the TSD period than those at the MPT; a clear pattern could not be ascertained for Fshr. At the MixPT, Fshb, Lhb, and Lhr mRNA increased in approximately half of the fish during TSD and sex differentiation and the sex ratio was 55.2% male. Based on the above results, it is suggested that animals with high Fshb and Lhb and low Lhr values represent putative males. These evidences, together with other studies, suggest that temperature may signal through the pituitary (differential expression of Fshb and Lhb) down to the gonads (differential expression of Lhr), probably affecting the regulation of steroidogenesis during the TSD process of pejerrey. The laminin alpha3 chain LG4 module (alpha3LG4 module) has cell adhesion, heparin binding, migration, and neurite outgrowth activities. The LG4 module consists of a 14-stranded beta-sheet (A-N) sandwich structure. Previously, we identified the A3G756 sequence (KNSFMALYLSKGRLVFALG in the human laminin alpha3 chain 1411-1429) as a biologically active site in the alpha3LG4 module. The A3G756 sequence is located on the E and F strands based on a crystal structure-based sequence alignment. The Lys1421 and Arg1423 residues, critical amino acids for the biological activity of A3G756, are located on the E-F connecting loop region as a KGR sequence. In this study, we focused on the KGR sequence and investigated the structural requirements of the E-F connecting loop region in the alpha3LG4 module. We synthesized three linear peptides containing the KGR sequence at the middle and the N and C termini and also prepared three cyclic analogues corresponding to the linear peptides. cyclo-hEF3A (CLYLSKGRLVFAC), which is a cyclic peptide containing the KGR sequence at the middle, showed the strongest inhibitory effect on both the heparin binding and the cell attachment to the recombinant alpha3LG4 module protein. The cyclo-hEF3A peptide was more active for syndecan-4 binding and neurite outgrowth than the linear form. Furthermore, we found that the structure of cyclo-hEF3A is similar to that of the connecting E-F loop region in human laminin alpha3LG4 module by structural analysis using molecular dynamics simulations. These results suggest that the loop structure of the E-F connecting region of the alpha3LG4 module is important for its biological activities. The cyclo-hEF3A peptide may be useful for the development of therapeutic reagents especially for wound healing and nerve regeneration. 相似文献
