Riffle beetle community structure is influenced by the preservation condition of stream riparian vegetation. Though, the width of riparian vegetation required to ensure conservation of stream insect communities is still controversial. Effects of alterations in riparian vegetation widths on stream insect community structure can be overcame by other environmental variables, like substrate type, hindering accurate assessments. We tested the effects of different riparian vegetation widths (>40, 30–15, 15–5 and <5 m) along with different substrate types (inorganic and organic) on riffle beetle community structure in southern Brazilian 4th‐ to 5th‐order streams. Riparian buffer widths and substrate types influenced riffle beetle community structure, but no interaction between them was observed. Reduced riparian vegetation widths downstream were associated with changes in riffle beetle dominant genera (Macrelmis predominated only in streams with narrowest riparian widths). Additionally, communities in organic substrates had lower equitability and different dominant genera (Hexacylloepus and Heterelmis) than inorganic ones. Our results showed that reductions in riparian vegetation were associated with water pollution and changes in riffle beetle community structure, suggesting that buffer strips narrower than 5 m are not adequate to maintain environmental integrity of southern Brazilian streams. These results have special importance for the conservation of stream insects in Brazil, as reductions up to less than 5 m in stream banks of small properties are allowed by the new Brazilian Forest Code, independently of stream order.  相似文献

Effects of cortisol on aggression and locomotor activity in rainbow trout   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
Noninvasive administration of cortisol through the diet resulted in relatively rapid (<1.5 h) and highly reproducible increases in plasma cortisol in rainbow trout, comparable to changes seen in fish subjected to substantial stress. Juvenile rainbow trout were reared in isolation for 1 week, before their daily food ration was replaced by a meal of cortisol-treated food corresponding to 6 mg cortisol kg(-1). All fish were observed for 30 min, beginning at 1 or 48 h following the introduction of cortisol-treated food. Additional cortisol (75% of the original dose on Day 2, and 50% on Day 3) was administered to the long-term cortisol-treated group. The resulting blood plasma concentrations of cortisol were similar in short- and long-term treated fish, and corresponded to those previously seen in stressed rainbow trout. Controls were fed similar food without cortisol. Half of the fish from each treatment group (controls and short- and long-term cortisol) were subjected to an intruder test (a smaller conspecific introduced into the aquarium), while half of the fish were observed in isolation. In fish challenged by a conspecific intruder, short-term cortisol treatment stimulated locomotor activity, while long-term treatment inhibited locomotion. Aggressive behavior was also inhibited by long-term cortisol treatment, but not by short-term exposure to cortisol. Cortisol treatment had no effect on locomotor activity in undisturbed fish, indicating that the behavioral effects of cortisol were mediated through interaction with other signal systems activated during the simulated territorial intrusion test. This study demonstrates for the first time that cortisol has time- and context-dependent effects on behavior in teleost fish.  相似文献

Endometriosis, one of the most frequent diseases in gynaecology, is a considerable threat to the physical, psychological and social integrity of women. The etiology and pathogenesis of this important disease, defined as the ectopic location of endometrium-like glandular epithelium and stroma outside the uterine cavity, is poorly understood. Clinical observations and in vitro experiments imply that endometriotic cells are invasive and able to metastasize. Analogous to tumour metastasis, it is likely that cell adhesion molecules are central for the invasion and metastasis of endometriotic cells. Investigation of these molecules in endometriosis should increase our understanding of the molecular mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of this disease.  相似文献

A Δsud deletion mutant of Wolinella succinogenes that lacked the periplasmic sulfide dehydrogenase (Sud) was constructed using homologous recombination. The mutant grew with sulfide and fumarate, indicating that Sud was not a component of the electron transport chain that catalyzed fumarate respiration with sulfide as an electron donor. Likewise, growth with formate and either polysulfide or sulfur was not affected by the deletion. Removal of Sud from wild-type W. succinogenes by spheroplast formation did not decrease the activity of electron transport to polysulfide. The Δpsr deletion mutant that lacks polysulfide reductase (Psr) grew by fumarate respiration with sulfide as an electron donor, indicating that Psr is not required for this activity.
